I won't wait that long...we can start with the Vikings tonight, who didn't wait around, they just went out and got Josh Freeman who was there for the Browns as well, and they chose Weeden...
It is soooooo reassuring that, by the end of the season, we will have 53 phuquing Einsteins on the roster. :|
I was thinking the same thing Irish. On another note, after watching a few quarters of the Clemson game last Saturday you can cross Boyd of my list of future QB's. I was not at all impressed with how he played.
Yep, he had a bad game for sure...but his skill set is still phenomenal. You can't base his career on one game, otherwise all QBs would be un-draftable.
Then how about Christian Ponder from the Vikings then ? ..ducks beer being tossed at him at least Ponder has a hot old lady to look at and he can at least run . he might suck as bad or worse than Flipper weeden . it would give us someone else to hate till the season ends . then we can bitch about ILB Robertson who is also stinking it on the other side of the ball . we do need ILB for next year .
Bama QB AJ McCarron ,,hasn't had a bad game yet , all he does is WIN . Manziel is still a frat boy ..no thanks! Hundley stunk it up hell they all stunk it up last weekend other than McCarron
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports "at least three teams" have contacted the Browns regarding a trade for Josh Gordon. Per Schefter, two clubs have standing offers of a "high pick and a player." It's unclear if Schefter means one team has offered the high pick and the other has offered the player, or if both organizations have offered a high pick and a player each. For now, the Browns are "balking" at trade offers for arguably their best player. If Cleveland continues to lose games with Brandon Weeden under center, it may have to consider a deal for Gordon. The trade deadline is eight days away. Gordon will be a hot name for the next week.
They really cant bench Flipper yet . Campbell doesent want to play . he is just getting a check hoping that he doesent have to play . I hope both are gone by week 16
For the Vikings, Matt Cassel has officially been demoted to third-string quarterback and is inactive. Josh Freeman will start and Christian Ponder will back him up. Trade for Cassel ..he isn't great but he also isn't that bad . better than Flipper or Campbell thoughts ?
Updating a previous item, the Texans waived RB Cierre Wood, DE Sam Montgomery, and OLB Willie Jefferson for smoking marijuana at the team hotel in Kansas City. If true, these three couldn't possibly be any dumber. The players contend they were simply smoking a cigar. Jefferson's agent, Chad Cannon, is considering filing a grievance on the players' behalf. As Texans OLB Brooks Reed notes, the three rookies "just kind of threw the opportunity of their lives away."
By Lane Adkins OBR Browns Analyist Posted Oct 21, 2013 In a year-and-a-half since he was drafted by the Browns, Brandon Weeden has proven he is not the man for this job. Time to move onto the 20th starter since 1999 to hopefully salvage this season. 0 Comments Brandon Weeden must have known when being drafted by the Cleveland Browns in April of 2012, the odds would not be in his favor to be entrenched as a starter for long considering he was one of 19 starting quarterbacks the team has fielded since the 1999 season. Doomed by continuous organizational change, from ownership through the front office and coaching staff, the Browns have been the model of "what not to be" in the NFL. Impatience as an organization to stick with a plan and impotence as an organization in securing adequate talent is the reality that has followed the Browns for nearly every season since 1999. As important as the quarterback position is today, every time this organization has selected a quarterback to lead the team they have selected the wrong guy. The Browns? brain trust of team president Mike Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert panicked on draft-day in 2012, as the necessity to get a quarterback led to the selection of Weeden with the 22nd overall pick. A year and a half later and following the Browns? latest loss, a 31-13 thrashing by the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 20, the book Weeden needs to be closed. The book doesn?t need to be closed because the Browns lost yet another game on Sunday and not because of his well-documented struggles of inconsistency, but because of his inability to grow as a player at the professional level. The speed of the game and Weeden?s hesitancy on the playing field has only created additional issues for a team already seeking an identity. From his lack of pocket awareness to his inability to see the play develop to every rocket pass he throws without touch, Weeden is proving he doesn't have the skill set to be an effective quarterback in the NFL not now and probably not ever. But, boy can he tease with his ability to throw an accurate rope downfield every once in awhile. As teammates rallied around Weeden publicly, there has been a level of uncertainty surrounding him. With each poorly thrown ball, with each missed opportunity, the body language of his teammates tells another story. This season, the AFC North Division appears to be in a weakened state and the Browns were in position to be a player through five games, rather than the customary whipping boy. The Browns were hopeful Weeden's play would improve following his two-game reprieve because of a thumb injury. Brian Hoyer?s season-ending knee injury proved to be catastrophic. In the two games since Hoyer?s injury, Weeden's performance has been terribly inconsistent. In game film reviews, the number of poor throws and missed opportunities that are conservatively noted are anywhere from 18 to 22. On average, three plays in an NFL game change the complexion or outcome. The Browns? struggles shouldn't be solely viewed as a "Weeden" problem, despite his central role within the Browns model of offensive mediocrity. While Weeden's lack of accuracy often places receivers in difficult situations, dropped passes, improperly run routes and the overall lack of execution week-in and week-out plague the Weeden-led Browns on game day. Strangely, the Browns offense was much quicker and effective while Hoyer was under center. Sure, patches of offensive ineptitude continued, but the offense would rebound during the game and the team won. In the end, it's about winning and the Browns ? along with Weeden ? just are not getting it done. And so it?s onto the 20th starting quarterback in Cleveland since 1999, as veteran Jason Campbell should get the nod to see if the Browns? fortunes can be reversed before it is too late.
You are emphasizing the Roll Tide Machine...not necessarily McCarron... 2013 Virginia Tech, 110 yards on 43.5% completion, 1 TD and 1 INT...yet they won 2013 Ole Miss, 180 yards 0TD and 1 INT...yet they won 2012 Texas A&M, 2 INTs directly led to their only loss Now to the years he had at the same age as the rest of these QBs except Boyd 2011 The Mighty Kent State Golden Flashes 226 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs...yet they won 2011 LSU 199 yards, 0 TD and 1 INT...lost 2011 Mississippi State 163, 0TD and 1 INT...yet still won 2010 Only played in spot duty So...he does have bad games, it's just the team he was lucky enough to land on can over come almost any inconsistency he throws at them. During that same time Tahj Boyd, the only other Senior in the top 5 QBs, has had 4 bad games in his 3 year full time starter career, you just happened to watch the only one he has had this year...
As sorry and sad as he is, I think Weeden is our QB. I think he is hurting the entire team, but I see no signs that the FO has any interest in making a change. I don't know how Chud feels about being left hanging, but it would explain how there is no urgency eminating from Berea. If they have no interest in making a move, then they must have made it clear to Chud that he wouldn't be judged on this year's performance. The problem, which has been pointed out by many of the posts, is that they are conditioning the rest of the team to losing and not letting it be a problem. Now that's motivating! Where is Slam? Where is the urgency? At 3 and 4 they look like 0 and 9 to finish the season is achievable if we just can stay on course. Nice job guys.
True that Irish, one bad game does not tell the whole story. However, I am concerned about the fact that the majority of his snaps come out of the pistol/shotgun formation and not from under center. I know that a QB will be taken by the bozo's in the FO next May, I guess I just am not seeing "that guy"...yet. There's a lot of football left and hopefully the class of 2014 will be as good as the one from 1983. My question as well Ken. I get the sense that Jim Bob is too busy trying to get things straightened out at Pilot/Flying J and the Browns are a secondary concern only when he has time. As far as Bonhead and Lombatard, I get the feeling that they are already (and have always been) looking at ?next year?. I truly believe that they threw in the towel on this season at the 2013 draft. I seems like they are willing to let Chud , Norv and Ray struggle along this season. There are some solid pieces added on the defensive side of the ball and IF the offense could ever stay on the field for more than 3-4 plays at a time they can be a very stout unit. Hopefully somehow some way Chud can instill a winning environment into this team. The lake gets a bit cold in Nov, Dec, and Jan around here. I would really like to be able to watch a winning if not at least competitive football when the sleet and snow starts flying around here.
First and foremost... Dudzinski is the one making the QB calls. He's the one who went with Weeden to start the season, the one who leap-frogged Campbell and the one who still defends and hangs on to Weeden. To the first point... how different would this team have looked had Hoyer started from Day 1? Honestly? We probably would have been 4-0 going into the Buffalo game. To the second point... we don't know why Campbell was leapfrogged and not turned to in recent weeks. He is a guy who's completed 60% of his career passes, has a 3.5% to 2.6% TD:INT ratio, a career rating of 82.4 (almost 13.0 points higher than Weeden) and a 0.443 winning percentage. There has got to be a coaching reason we are not privvy to. The only other thought is that Campbell is literally the last line. Once we make that switch, it's all or nothing. And if he's equally as inept as Weeden (which his past season in Chicago would lead you to believe he is) then we're in for a long, long season in which Chudzinski could find himself on the hot seat.
You shouldn't be concerned, as that is what is happening in the new age offense in the NFL. It is easier to take the snap and observe the defense instead of trying to read it while running backwards. It makes more sense... Again, I was TOTALLY against the hire of Mike Lombardi, wasn't thrilled with Banner either... But I don't think they "threw in the towel" at all in retrospect. I think they did what was possible to improve this team one off season at a time. They did what they did in free agency, which was fortify this defense. In return, prior to the Green Bay game, they were one of the best defenses in the entire NFL, hands down...even with injuries to some important pieces. I can't think if a time since the return that we could lose two players like Rubin and Sheard and merely move on like nothing happened. As for the offense, they added what they felt would give them an opportunity to improve, Devone Bess and Brian Hoyer. The coaching staff then handed the reigns to the incumbent Weeden and he crapped down his leg until getting hurt...Then this looked like a NFL offense for two games with Hoyer at the helm. (edited for content) Almost forgot, they also gave them the most dynamic running back on the team this year in Dion Lewis... Now, with the injury, they are in a predicament...bring in untalented replacements and later get ridiculed for it, or stay the course with the current untalented players that were left by the last regime. It really makes little sense to replace bad players with possibly worse players...as much as I would love to see some new blood in here after seeing what this offense looks like currently. As for the draft, I have said it a hundred times, there was little to no talent to be had in the 2013 draft...NOT over drafting bad players in essence is doing more good for the team than bad. Now with a over abundance of talent in the 2014 draft, this team is poised to improve from this draft more than any other team in the NFL. Sorry, I am jumping on the Lombardi/Banner bandwagon, Hoyer made me a changed man and understanding the draft helps solidify my choice to defend them... As for looking to next year...that is their JOB. They give the franchise as much talent as they can in an off season, then it is in the hands of the coaches to get the most out of that talent...alas, there is only so much you can do in one off season...But as soon as the 2013 draft was over, their job began getting busier...constantly looking for castoff talent from released players and organizing scouts to analyze the college talent in approximately 1,400 division 1 games each season..That is just FBS and FCS games, doesn't count Division II and III or NAIA and NJCAA. In order to properly comprehend, that is two months of college football if you didn't sleep over those two months and watched football constantly 24 hours a day with a catheter so you didn't have to move from your chair. Yet, they made a decision that the talent was not up to par and made a decision to find a way to not only replace those picks with picks in 2014, but also improve each pick by a full round...honestly, I am beginning to think they are genius, instead if ignorant, like I did at the time of their hire. (edited) They also traded Trent Richardson for a first round pick and this offense improved at the run...while the Colts regressed.
Sorry SAS, we have been agreeing a lot lately, but Chud's seat isn't even luke warm...There is no way in hell this front office replaces Chud after one off season of building a roster. You can hang the QB decision on him, but I'm not sure he has done anything else this season to put him on a hot seat.
Irish, Glad you are able to jump on the Bonehead/ Lombatard wagon. I can?t. I get it, and can see that they understand the business of football and how to make the draft work. I?ll give them that. They have positioned themselves to be able to make moves to select players that should for all intense purposes improve the talent on the Roster. I do not have any faith that they are able to accurately EVALUATE that talent. It really sucks that Hoyer went down. He was the spark that the offense needed. I still scratch my head with the signing of Campbell. If the guy can?t step up and fill in when the #1 guy goes down or a change is needed then WHY have the guy on the roster at all? (Why didn?t they keep T Lewis if they just needed a bench warmer?) Now I?m not asking that they go out and sign another QB just because the current ones on the roster are? well let?s just say they aren?t getting it done. I don?t think there are any better options readily available. Smart move was NOT signing Freeman, case and point last night vs. the hapless Giants. I also don?t? think they are even thinking about trading away any draft picks just to try and put a few more check marks in the W column. I get that. It?s all about building for the Future. As a longtime fan it really sucks not looking forward to Sunday Football, like I did as a kid. Instead I now spend my Sundays doing projects around the house or as my sig says I go fishing, come back and check the box scores on Mondays and Tuesdays and see how bad they sucked this week. The two games the Hoyer played actually gave me a little hope that I could once again look forward to Sunday football. Perhaps in the future the FO can prove to me otherwise. Until then I have no plans on jumping on that wagon. P.S. Agree that Chud is the HC for the foreseeable future. I think with the right incentive Norv could be the OC for a long time. I really hope that they can keep Horton as the DC for the long haul as well.
Good question...I think conventional wisdom would say a guy with a rich starter history should be able to come off the bench at any time and the game will not chew him up and spit him out...But after seeing what I personally have seen from Campbell, I think it was a bad signing. Cheers my friend, it really is tough knowing the weekend is drawing near and not losing sleep waiting for kickoff like I used to. Still hasn't resulted in my honey do list getting shorter, but it is closing in on that for sure... That is my whole point though in defending these guys... They didn't bring us Weeden and Richardson... They brought us Hoyer and Lewis... They didn't cause either injury, but the talent THEY EVALUATED got us all excited.
