Spot on, Irish. I don't believe the F/O *wants* to lose games, but just like the Colts in the 2011 season, they're not going to go out of their way and improve the team to get from 3 wins to 6 and risk missing out on some blue chip QB prospects. The pickings in the F/A market are extremely slim. There aren't many QBs out that who -- as first blush -- look suited to our offense and who can come in and catch lightning in a bottle like Brian Hoyer did. Obviously, falling behind 14-0 so early changed our gameplan on Sunday, but the coaching staff needs to make running the ball a priority for the rest of the season. We likely won't be able to correct the massive short-comings at the QB position, but we should be able to start forcing the running game.
No, the free agent list is littered with guys who, like Weeden, didn't cut it at this level. The only ones I would look at is practice squad guys..There is a reason these teams are holding on to them. Potential far outweighs the known lack of talent imho. If a guy has proven, he doesn't belong, then why on earth would you replace Weeden with him? Might as well keep Weeden and just get a better draft pick.
Weeden simply doesn't "get it". He was highly drafted into *two* professional sports yet was absolutely crap in both of them. That shows both an unwillingness and inability to improve. He only sees good things because he's unable to improve. The other side of the coin is that we've heard how much he was coddled by the Holmgren regime and I would not be surprised if that continued with this one. He's not mentally tough enough to handle the adversity that comes with being a franchise QB. And all of this leaves me in disbelief thinking that Jason Campbell cannot get a shot. He must truly be worthless.
I would have no problem giving any one of those practice squad players you mentioned a shot at it. The only concern there is how long it would take them to adjust to a new team and new playbook. They're still all very young into their professional careers. There's a very good chance we wouldn't see a quick turnaround. Kinda wishing we'd kept Thad Lewis around. Or heck, even Colt.
SAS, from what I have seen and heard about Campbell, he is simply a warm body in case of injury. Who in the heck decides to make himself unavailable for a pre-season game with hopes of showing a coaching staff they need to give him more of a chance to start? Especially when you are competing with Weeden?? He is just standing on the sidelines praying that no one gets hurt...I will be surprised if Weeden gets replaced, simply because I don't think the coaching staff will hear what they want after talking to Campbell. His head is no longer in this game at the level it needs to be.
There's an even BETTER chance of having NO turn around staying on course with Weeden.. Even if it took 3 weeks to get them up to speed, that leaves you with 7 games beginning after the bye. If nothing else, it will get your future 2nd/3rd string QB up to date sooner than later. Next year, the Browns will take a QB in the draft, Hoyer will hopefully be your starter, with the new kid being the 3rd QB and sending Campbell on his way.
Yes, I already assume Weeden will be gone... What I meant was there would be 3 QBs on the roster: Brian Hoyer the 2014 starter Then one of theses young guys off the practice squad would compete with the incoming 2014 draft pick to be the 2nd and 3rd string.
I say we go full on Read Option and atleast be exciting. Move Marquis Gray up from wildcat/fb/te/emergency QB to just QB. HE CANT DO ANY WORSE THAN WEED-B-GONE. On another note...did everyone else love our throwbacks to match GBs? Oh wait...theyre not throwbacks...theyve just barely ever changed.
Homecoming? The Jets have to make a decision whether or not to activate David Garrard soon. If they do, they'll likely cut a familiar face -- Brady Quinn. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...-decision-to-make-which-could-set-quinn-free/
It?s Hangover Monday Lounge Houndz *WALL* Been a bit busy? I am greatly concerned that, despite the resume of Norv and Chud, Weeden is not improving at all. Same mistakes every week and no apparent effort to improve. Worse, is that Campbell is just a warm body on the sidelines and not even a consideration. *HELP* *HELP* Cleaning the catch-o-the weekend and throwing the empties in the garbage. *YES* Unfortunately it is looking more and more like the Browns won?t win more than four games at all this year. With the way the offense isn?t shaping up at all we fans could be stuck with a dismal 3-13 record and a top 3 draft selection in May. And as painful as it is, I DO BELIEVE THAT is what the FO wants. It?s as if they?ve already hoisted the white flag high above the stadium and are busy looking ahead to next year?s draft. It?s not what I want to see or what I expected from the Browns this season. Yet that is the dog turd that Banner and Lombardi are leaving on the door step. So call it what you want, but until things improve without all the BS excuses I will be spending my weekends elsewhere. The product that Bonehead and Lombatard are putting on the field isn?t worth me spending the effort to watch. I?ve got better things to do with my Sundays than scream and yell at the TV, upset the wife and kids, get all depressed as the Browns get their azzes handed to them repeatedly.
Updating an earlier item, the Browns have yet to decide on their Week 8 quarterback. The word comes straight from the team. CBS' Jason La Canfora reported earlier Monday that they were sticking with Brandon Weeden. It's quite possible that will remain the case, but the Browns are wisely opting against immediately announcing Weeden will get another chance. Weeden was Tyler Palko-level bad against a Packers defense riddled with backups on Sunday. However, backup Jason Campbell was similarly inept for the Bears in 2012. We'd guess Weeden ultimately gets one more start.
I said that two weeks ago . a QB best friend is a punishing ground game . Mangini won 5 straight doing just that to finish the season up his first year . yes I still like Mangini ...my kinda coach .
will they even score against the Chiefs ? KC has one helluva good defense . will Flipper finish that game in one piece ?
GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- Following Sunday?s 31-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Cleveland Browns quickly switched their focus to next week?s trip to Arrowhead Stadium to play the Kansas City Chiefs. GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- The past is past, and the focus is squarely on the future. That was the message of the Cleveland Browns? players after the team?s 31-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday. And for the Browns, focusing on the future means turning their attention to the Kansas City Chiefs, who improved to 7-0 under new coach Andy Reid with their 17-16 win over the Houston Texans Sunday. ?It?s kind of a machine; that?s how you?ve got to think of this team,? Browns safety T.J. Ward said following the loss. ?We?ve got to come back, get our attention on Kansas City, watch the film, see what we did wrong, correct the mistakes and hopefully, we don?t make them again next week against Kansas City. ?I know that all our players and all my teammates gave it 100 percent, and that?s what really counts the most. We made some mistakes. That?s going to happen in ball games, but as long as you have everybody out there giving it their all, giving 100 percent, you can?t really ask for more. Everyone wants to win. No one wants to lose.? Veteran defensive lineman Ahtyba Rubin said the Browns can use the loss to Green Bay ?as a learning experience? in preparing for the Chiefs, and that his position group will lead the charge as the Browns (3-4) fight to get back in the race for the AFC North Division championship. ?We?ve still got a lot of games ahead of us, and we?ll just keep working,? Rubin said. ?There?s no quit in us, and we?re going to keep fighting and keep moving in the direction that we want to go. It comes from just being a player. You want to always win. You?re competing, and you?re giving your all. There isn?t any quit in us, especially this D-line. We?re going to go to work on Monday and find a way to win.? Six-time Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas added, ?We?ve still got a lot of season ahead of us. Disappointed but not discouraged would be the best way to describe it. We?re 3-4 right now with a lot of season to go. Everything we want is still out there in front of us. Just because we lost today doesn?t mean the season?s over. It?s a long season, so we?ve just got to come back on Monday and get prepared for our next opponent.? Safety Tashaun Gipson said succinctly that the team has ?to go play Cleveland Browns football? in order to end their two-game losing streak and get back in the win column. ?It?s truly things that we?ve done, whether it?s missed opportunities where we get our hands on balls or missed opportunities to get to Aaron Rodgers, at least two or three times that I can think of,? Gipson said. ?We?ve just got to capitalize on those plays when they come our way. ?We?ve got the guys to do it. Our front seven holds themselves accountable for things, and us on the back end, we hold ourselves accountable, and it?s a team effort.?
I have my eye on the Rams . they lost Bradford yesterday . The Rams have a backup they don't trust to handle the team long term - they obviously like Kellen Clemens enough to give him a roster spot but don't want to hand him the reigns for the rest of the year. They are young, loaded with draft options, flirting with .500 and struggling for respectability in a very tough division. The season could easily tilt either way at this point. Essentially with the injury to Sam Bradford, they've become the Cleveland Browns of the NFC. So who does their FO find? A street FA? A theft from somebody else's PS? A trade of a draft choice perhaps? A retired but willing to come back for one more payday grizzled vet? Tebow??? They sure don't seem like they're going to stand pat. So I'm VERY curious to see what the Rams do and how it works out - because it'll be something we could have done perhaps and it'll tell us how shrewd our FO really is.
A wise old running back: Sometimes, a new player without any personal relationship with Weeden can provide a more objective take. Willis McGahee, who joined the team on Sept. 20, offered some interesting observations. McGahee said: ?We have a quarterback we need to help. That?s everybody ? O-line, receivers, running backs. We can?t put all the pressure on him. And we?re not helping him right now. ?I played a couple games with (Weeden). From what I?ve seen, he might have made a couple plays that maybe weren?t supposed to be thrown. But who says everything?s going to be perfect? I had some runs in the game that I could?ve taken backside, and I didn?t take it. ?It?s hard. It?s hard for a quarterback to come out and be perfect. Especially with the history he?s had here, it?s even harder with everybody on him. At the end of the day, man, I take my hat off to him. He still walks around with a smile on his face, still competitive. That right there shows what kind of character he has.? McGahee echoed the prevailing sentiment in the locker room that if and when a quarterback change happens, so be it. ?Whoever the team goes with, at the end of the day, that?s what you roll with it. That?s something the coaches have to do. It?s not us. This locker room is together. We?re not separated,? he said.
