Schefter is reporting that the Browns and Dorsey may be parting ways...

My guess on this would be that either Haslam wants someone within the building to have more power (DePodesta) or they are looking at hiring a head coach that wants to build his own staff (McDaniels).

Noooooooooooooo! Dorsey's the man in Cleveland. Then they will blow it up and start again

Wow. Confirmed? I think this is a mistake, to be starting over so quickly. I'm not saying that I thought Dorsey was the savior, but two years simply isn't enough time to evaluate, especially when he spent one year with an inherited coach, and the team is developing the QB he picked.

I wonder how the timeline worked, with firing Freddie and then Dorsey getting canned. I wonder how that all played out, internally.

Being called a mutual parting of ways.

As Tim says it could open the door for a coach that wants personnel powers. Like a McDaniels of maybe even Jim Harbaugh.

This would be the ideal time to install a structured front office where the President of Football Operations reports to ownership, the General Manager reports to the PFO and the Head Coach reports to the General Manager.

I believe hiring McDaniels would be a mistake that could reverse all of the positive progress that started with Sashi’s original plan.

Any team that even talks to McDaniels is dumb.

That roster is going to get turned upside down. This is horrible news for Brown's fans. New GM, New HC is going to play hell on continuity.

This is an interesting thread, ive read some good stuff so far and ive had my own thoughts and ideas.

The initial thought that came to my mind was fixing the offense, especially a regressing Baker Mayfield, so I was thinking an offensive minded GM would be ideal. When it comes to a head coach, im thinking a defensive minded guy might work well if he can bring along an offensive, creative OC, that can mold back together a broken offense.

Fixing Baker will need to be addressed as far as a scheme offensively goes, but in my opinion, it has to start with a revamped offensive line. Baker must have protection and be able to not hurry or panic back there as he seams to make mistakes quite a bit when rushed, as most QB's will. I still believe the core is solid, but a new, workable system needs to be employed. Its my opinion that the defense is further along than the offense, therefor the Browns should start building and tweaking that side of the ball first. So the question is, who fits that bill? Not only at GM, HC, but QB coaching as well.

Im not good at name dropping and would only be guessing/speculating, but there are a few offensive minded candidates out there. Eric Bieniemy is one who has a great resume, but it may be fluffed up because of the play of Mahomes and crew in KC, but he should get some serious consideration and credit for what has transpired in KC. The Browns have formally requested interviews with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Vikings offensive coordinator, Kevin Stefanski, Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman and Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll... so they are thinking offensively and in my opinion should be.

Bottom line to me is this - They have some time and a draft to consider, so they must get it right this time and above all things, learn from their past mistakes on putting together the leadership in the form of coach's that can attack specific needs, or else it will remain the same ol shit for the Browns and their fans, which i dont want to see either.

PS - you cant have Stafanski :p

My assessment runs along the lines posted by @Willie , but I came to the opposite conclusion.
    • Freddie's replacement should be a defensively minded coach who will then pick an Offensive Coordinator who can then spend 110% of his time on fixing Mayfield and incorporating an offensive scheme that maximizes the roster already in place.
      • His choice of OC needs to have the ability to either develop 60% of the O-line or can attract a postion coach (or coaches) that can.
    • He (the next HC) needs to have a demonstrated ability to instill both passion and discipline in the roster (in equal doses) while on the field.
    • He needs to have some degree of success yet be young enough to relate to this relatively young roster.
    • First and foremost, he needs to be able to be demanding of his own coaching staff yet willing to listen to them.
I don't have a lot of insight in his interpersonal or managerial skills, but the Defensive Coordinator for the 49ers (Robert Saleh) checks all of the other boxes.

I suspected for some time now that we would be in a HC search about now. However, I did not see Dorsey's departure coming so I haven't really given much thought to filling that opening.

The real problem that Dorsey's firing poses is that now you have to hire a GM, then let them get their coach. And that timetable sucks. Or, stick a GM and coach together and hope for the best - but that routinely proves to be a bad idea.

And if they're picking a HC and giving them GM powers over the roster, well... Who is out there that inspires that kind of confidence?

gotta put this behind us. No choice.

IMO we need a guy who has a network of coaches he's already familiar with, to seed this new regime, which means some time at the NFL level in my mind. He should have risen to a level of responsibility above positional coach, with some organizational chops to go with his personal coaching record.

I'm not one of those who thinks we need someone to "kick some ass", but absolutely believe he has to be a "strong" leader, with plenty of confidence, who demands his players adhere to his rules, and gets the most out of his "stars" by making it clear they must be ready to be the target of criticism, so that everyone knows they are accountable.

The pairing of GM/HC is critical. IMO Dorsey was a competitive warrior, who made too much of the power play. I believe he brought Haley here to unseat Hugh, and won, but DePodesta exposed his power hungry ways when his choice for HC was ignored, in favor of Kitchens. Which according to sources was a John Dorsey solo pick.

That choice created a make or break for Dorsey. Haslam on the other hand, should have been a more communicative owner, who made it clear to Dorsey that the epic failure of his HC would force a total re-evaluation of Dorsey's position and power.

A sad, poorly handled job on both men's part. Dorsey's most glaring mistake was in being so power hungry, and at the same time so resistant to collaboration with mangement.

So, now we're left with no managment, and proven weak owners who've repeatedly made a habit of listening to people outside the building to solve problems that within. Spin the wheel again Jimmy.

I have to agree with your take on this, @Lyman. I like the idea of an OC being able to give his full time to the offense and working to improve our QB.
