Kizer actually had another slide in this game, the defender was even closer than Shazier, he side stepped and "might have" put a finger on him on the way by. If I have time to go through it later, I'll try to find out who this enigma of a man is. He must be one helluva stud athlete to be able to avoid a sliding QB. He doesn't need to be anywhere near Kizer on that play, despite your lack of confidence in his athletic ability. So no, if he tries to do a Super Man near his head and "accidentally" takes the head off in the process, that isn't any better. Get the F out of the way of a sliding QB...It really IS that simple.
That's pretty ridiculous. You could say he "started" his slide on the 24 yard line, he finished on the 26 yard line. Shazier was on about the 27 yard line when Kizer started his slide (go ahead and pause it at that moment) and was already starting to crouch for the hit. Shazier didn't even take another two steps from the time Kizer started his slide to impact, let alone 4. He took one step while lowering himself. As far as I'm concerned, he had two options, stay low and hit him or try to jump over him. I'll ask you the same question I asked Irish...if he had tried to jump over him and hit him in the head would you feel better about it?
No, some have professionals that understand the rules, while others have assholes that end up with a few thousand left in their bank accounts after the play...
Hey, I said it was an illegal play. I said it was a foul. I have no problem with him being flagged or fined. I just think it was the least egregious of the 3 fouls. I, personally, don't think he was trying to hurt Kizer. I, personally, felt like he made a split second decision to follow through with the tackle and it was probably the wrong one, but wasn't a dirty, intentionally trying to hurt his opponent, type of play. If you disagree with that assessment, so be it.
Irish, Lyman and mano make good points. First and foremost, definitely penalty and fine. Mano isn't arguing that. In my opinion Shazier had enough time to adjust to avoid the hit, but there's a difference between looking at the video and being on the field. Split second decision is still the wrong decision. Personally I feel the opposite of Mano, to me Shazier's is the worst. Gay's and Wilcox's were attempts to separate the receiver from the ball. During the game I didn't feel it was a penalty. But after multiple replays, he hit the receiver's head with his shoulder, so it's a penalty. A tiny bit lower and it's a great play. Wilcox was trying to save a TD. Helmet to helmet, clearly a penalty and he paid a fine and a concussion.
I think the part you're missing is the fact that he drove his helmet into him. It's stupid and dangerous. He could have broken his own neck.
4 yards never equals 4 steps. I used to run 4.9 in the 40 and 5 yards was 2 steps for me, unless I was making a cut. If I'm not mistaken Shazier runs a 4.4 or 4.5, which means he covers 4 yards in less than half a second. I completely understand the rules the NFL expects the players to abide by, but to say in less than half a second someone's intentions are completely known seems a little invalid. I'm not saying Shazier should not have been disciplined or flagged, because that is the standard of the NFL today. I just think "intention" is not so black and white in less than a half of a second of decision making time. I hope the Steelers aren't becoming a dirty team and time will tell.
