I can't remember any others, but that one really pissed me off, because as soon as he hit him I knew Colon was done.
Well then I stand corrected I looked it up. Couldn't find a video so I can't comment. I did find a Steelers fan forum that discussed it and nobody there seemed to think it was a dirty play
You could find threads that old. If you cut an OL at the knees that doesn't seem kosher to me. It may not be against NFL rules, but chopping someone's knees doesn't seem like anything less than an injury waiting to happen.
Yeah, I googled "Terrell Suggs injured Willie Colon". Outside of one "F Suggs" general post, nobody seems to think it was intentional or dirty http://www.steelersuniverse.com/for...Terrell-Suggs-Responsible-For-His-Knee-Injury
Ben wasn't trying to hurt him, but it was also very unnecessary. I can see people's side when they say it was dirty, but I disagree. I was annoyed with the call on Gay, because he hit the receiver with his shoulder. Watt's pf was an excited rookie play, didn't hit the QB hard. Doesn't make it any less stupid, but I wouldn't say it was dirty. Demo covered Wilcox. That leaves Shazier's. I did not see this play live, but the video I've seen looks like a clear penalty and he should be fined. Can't hit a QB when he is sliding. Kizer had left his feet, the hit was unnecessary. Dirty? Of all the personal fouls, this one is the closest to crossing the line into dirty. I freely admit that I may be biased, but I don't consider these plays dirty.
IMHO it was a dirty hit. I know you say he was going for the ball and then the contact becomes incidental but I didnt see it that way. The fact ward took shots like that is irrelevant.
Ben looked like he was trying to hump Ogbah's leg. What a chump. Gay was just stupid. He led with the shoulder but he went too high. Just aim a hair lower and it's a good, clean play. Wilcox was the one that concerned me the least. His job there is to separate the receiver from the ball, it's the only thing he can do in that scenario to prevent a TD. He led to where the ball was and the combination of Coleman ducking his head a little led to the head contact. Unfortunate but hardly dirty. Safeties that don't try and dislodge the football there with as big a blow as possible dont keep jobs. The Watt and Shazier hits concerned me the most. There's no place in football for that. Not only are they putting players (and themselves) in danger but it's a flag every time. Your hurting the team. Knock it off.
Update: William Gay also fined $25K for his hit on Ricardo Lewis JJ Wilcox fined $25K for his hit on Corey Coleman Ben, not fined for his poor impression of a toddler hanging on his daddy's leg.
I wonder if he received a warning, being it was his first game. The others are veterans who "should" know better in the eyes of the league.
Probably because he didn't end up making contact but he led with the helmet which is just plain stupid and dangerous.
Just my 2 cents...4 personal fouls is inexcusable. Are the Steelers dirty because of them? I would say three of the hits were dirty, yes. Will Gay's hit was the worst of the bunch to me, but Wilcox wasn't far behind. Shazier's hit on Kizer was less offensive in my opinion. No question it was a foul, I just think its hard for a defender to pull up on that shot, especially against a QB with the running skills of Kizer. If that's Tom Brady coming at him, Shazier likely isn't that committed to the tackle knowing Brady is surely going to slide. He has to believe that Kizer might try to get around him, so there's more commitment from the defender. Once you are committed, its hard to pull up. Gay and Wilcox should have known better. You aim low. Period. So, are these Steelers dirty? As a team, no. They made some stupid mistakes but I don't think any of the players involved have a reputation for that type of thing, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Lastly, Ben's "low hit" on Ogbah is a joke. Anybody who thinks Ben was trying to hurt Ogbah there is an idiot. Ben reacted like brat and grabbed his ankle to try and keep Ogbah out of the play. It was pathetic, and maybe illegal, but it wasn't dirty.
I'm not trying to be a dick, but if Shazier was attempting to tackle Kizer, he would have missed. He lowers his head and drives it directly into the ground beneath Kizer's outstretched body. What defender tackles a guy straight into the ground? You go through the runner, not down into the ground. If he was fully "committed" to the point where he couldn't stop, then Kizer would watch the film because he (and every other player attempting to be tackled by Shazier) can easily just step over him when he commits to a tackle, because he is going directly into the ground and not tackling properly. "already committed tackle...THIS WAS THE FIRST rule lobbied by the NFL, the one on QBs and sliding...if he slides let the hell up. Not, go ahead and commit by driving your helmet into his chest when he's already on the ground. He had 4 yards between him and Kizer when KIZER COMMITTED to the slide. If he can't tell he's sliding, then he isn't a professional athlete.
Irish, I don't completely disagree with you. Like I said, it was a foul. I just said it was the least offensive of the 3 hits. Could he have let up? Maybe, but he also could have taken Kizer's head off if he was truly trying to hurt the guy, or even by just trying to go over him (which is what you often see by defenders trying to avoid that penatly). You say "he had 4 yards between him and Kizer when Kizer committed to the slide". That's less than two steps considering they were moving towards each other. Let me ask you this...if Shazier had tried to go over Kizer and hit him in the head by accident, would that have been better to you?
Correction. 4 yards = four steps. Only one player was still taking steps. The other already had stopped taking steps as he was horizontal to the ground sliding. Name ONE proffessional LB (not named Burfict) that can't pull up within 4 steps.
