they're lucky Tavares is a star and they're lucky they didn't pull the plug too early on Okposo. they're primed to screw up Strome and the D. they've already screwed up all young goalies they picked Bailey #9 in '08, DeHaan 12 in '09, El Nino 5 in '10, lots od 2s and 3s that aren't or will never be NHL players and this is just the bad picks since Garth took over. and he's the best GM they've had in a couple decades.
Have to be fair to Garth, asking the restroom attendant, equipment manager, bus driver, and pilot to do the drafting too is quite alot for someone to take on.
let's see what the GMs were up to during their discussions today... well, ok. let's check back tomorrow.
One of these GMs is Stan Bowman and the other is Brian Burke. guess which one is which. (spoiler- you'll definitely know) GM- A- "analytics to me is can you take raw data & give me an edge on drafting or trading for a player? No one has come up with one yet" GM- B- "What we do is different. I think it's better, but I guess it's a matter of opinion. It's also a competitive advantage." A- XXX also said that if there is an analytics system that he thinks works he'll buy it right now and he pays cash. B- "What we have is more proprietary. Which is why I'm really trying not to talk about it. I think what we do gives us an advantage over other teams. They might say I'm wrong, but we're pretty confident that what we have works." A- "My view is show me. I?m from Missouri on this one, show me it works. Until then, this is an eyeballs business" B- "You can't disagree with the numbers, you can only disagree with the conclusion. People can say we're drawing the wrong conclusions, and that's fine. But I don't think we are. I'm not looking to get it adopted league-wide. I like what we have, and I believe in it." A- "It doesn?t show you when he goes back to the bench and the coach reams him out..." &"...and the guy instead of pouting he straightens his shoulders up and says to his teammates let?s go." & ".... It doesn?t teach you those things. At the end of the day, that?s what wins." "[coach of team B] knows exactly which players do well in what zone, where they should start, where they should finish, he knows how to build his own lineup. He's a guy that has really adapted. It's not just adapting to the players, it's adapting to the information that's provided to you through analytics." - Ken Hitchcock. I stole these quotes from a deadspin article today, thought it was funny w/ all the Burke bashing we do. I don't even think he's necessarily 100% wrong but he is such a buffoon about the way he talks to the media.
You never know what gms are going to do in an offseason in some franchises. Hawks sign Raanta and Khabibulin last year. Go to 1:15 and listen. Someone was able to find this on another board:
Well, Shero is officially gone! Although he brought in Neal and Niskanen for Goligosky, Kunitz, Jokinnen, got Sutter and 2 good high draft high picks for young defensemen, for Staal who didn't do much and was way overpaid. Got rid of a waste in Whitney who was overpaid to the Sharks, who then turned around and got rid of Whitney to the Oilers. He also signed Martin...I don't think Shero was that bad and think Bylsma should be the one leaving. Shero did everything possible to build this team up. I think the problem lies with MAF and Bylsma. Bad goaltending and bad coaching..... Rumor here has it that the Pens are trying to get Babcock, I heard on the radio in the car. How true this is, I'm not sure.......Could be just a rumor flying around out there.....
