I'm very late, but Tee Martin has been better for the Ravens than previous WR coaches. He had Hollywood looking decent, Bateman, even Duvernay to a degree. But you can only coach up bad talent to a certain level. Not only have wr had bad talent at WR, we had an OC, or have a HC, that is against the passing game featuring WRs. When terrible route design leads to 2 or 3 pass catchers within 5 yards of each other, forcing the QB to hold the ball, it doesn't give the WR coach a chance to look good.

Long story short, the passing game/WR issue im Baltimore is more on the OC, HC, and team philosophy (most of which I could go far more indepth on) than it is the WR coach

 

Just curious, like that monkey called , George, but does Lamar Jackson's style of passing have anything to do with this or does it even go back pre-Lamar?

 

Hard to say. We haven't seen him in the pros without Roman at OC as of now. I know pretty much every WR he's had that left has said the issue is the scheme and not Lamar. Roman's scheme goes back to his san fran days. I forgot what youtuber it was, but they showed how he was running the same bad plays from then. There was side by side footage.

A telling thing is how Roman has not gotten a real NFL interview to my knowledge. I think Stanford was the only college team interested in him as well and even they pulled the interview

 

Well, good luck with Todd Monken, maybe there will be a turnaround to a more successful scheme. I wonder what Jackson feels about this hiring also. Hopefully Monken and Jackson work tightly together (if Lamar is still available) and things gel a bit more.

 

Cardinals hire Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator



With a defensive coordinator becoming the new head coach of the Cardinals, the most important hire as it relates to franchise quarterback Kyler Murray is offensive coordinator.

New Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon has made his move.


Via multiple reports, former Browns quarterbacks coach Drew Petzing has gotten the job. Petzing, 35, will be responsible for designing, implementing, and executing the offense that Murray will run.

The bad news for the Cardinals is that, if it doesn’t work, they’ll need to hire a new coordinator. The other bad news for the Cardinals is that, if it does work, Petzig will become a head-coaching candidate. If he gets a job elsewhere, Gannon will be back to square one with the most important position and relationship on the team.

Petzing has been coaching at the NFL level since 2013, when he joined the Browns as a football operations intern. He arrived in Minnesota as part of Mike Zimmer’s original staff, and Petzing had multiple jobs there from 2014 through 2019.

He followed Kevin Stefanski to Cleveland in 2020, serving as tight ends coach for two years and quarterbacks coach in 2022.

Gannon and Petzing worked together for four years in Minnesota, where Gannon was assistant defensive backs coach from 2014 through 2017.

The Steelers are hiring Aaron Curry from the Seahawks’ staff as the linebackers coach, Matt Zenitz of On3Sports reports.

Pittsburgh lost linebackers coach Brian Flores to the Vikings after he accepted the defensive coordinator job.


Curry served last season as assistant defensive line/defensive ends coach in Seattle. He joined the Seahawks in 2019 as a coaching assistant before being promoted to a defensive assistant the following season.

He began his coaching career under his own former position coach, Bill Lambert, at the University of Charlotte. Curry worked as a graduate assistant in 2014 before becoming the defensive line coach in 2015.

Curry was a standout college player at Wake Forest, winning the 2008 Butkus Award.

The Seahawks drafted Curry fourth overall in 2009, but traded him to the Raiders during the 2011 season. He played 48 games with 39 starts and made 203 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 12 pass breakups in his four-year career.

Renaldo Hill leaving Chargers to join Dolphins; Chargers plan to promote Derrick Ansley to DC



The Chargers hired a new offensive coordinator recently and they’ll have a new defensive coordinator in 2023 as well.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Renaldo Hill is leaving his post as the Chargers defensive coordinator in order to join the Dolphins coaching staff. Hill will be the defensive pass game coordinator in Miami.


Hill worked for Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for two years when Fangio was the head coach in Denver before going to the Chargers when Brandon Staley, who also worked under Fangio, became their head coach.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Chargers plan to promote Derrick Ansley to defensive coordinator. He has been the defensive backs coach for the last two seasons and has coordinator experience from his time at the University of Tennessee. Assistant defensive backs coach Tommy Donatell is expected to become the secondary coach and pass game coordinator in another move.

The Chargers hired Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator after firing Joe Lombardi, so Staley’s staff will have new voices leading on both sides of the ball.

Report: Colts to hire Jim Bob Cooter as offensive coordinator

New Colts head coach Shane Steichen has decided on his first offensive coordinator.

Indianapolis is hiring Jim Bob Cooter for the role, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Cooter spent the 2022 season as the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator. But he also served as a consultant for the 2021 Eagles, which is his previous tie to Steichen.

Cooter was the Lions offensive coordinator from 2016-2018. But he will not call plays in 2023, as Steichen said last week that he plans to do that for the offense.

Eagles interviewed former Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard for their open defensive coordinator position.

Leonhard spent 10 years in the NFL as a safety, and per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is well respected in NFL circles. Leonhard was hired as Wisconsin's defensive coordinator in 2017 and served as interim head coach in 2022. With Jonathan Gannon taking over as the Cardinals' head coach, the Eagles look to be exploring options outside of the building for his replacement.

 

Past NFL players, including ones who actually played for the Ravens have differing opinions. Often polar opposites of each other. Who is right? Not to mention there are factors that would motivate these past players to be optimistic, pessimistic or any other degree of less than honest.

 

Matt Patricia is the latest candidate for the Broncos’ defensive coordinator vacancy.

Patricia is in Denver interviewing with Sean Payton and the Broncos today, according to NFL Network.


The 48-year-old Patricia previously served as defensive coordinator for the Patriots from 2012 to 2017. He then had an unsuccessful stint as head coach of the Lions from 2018 to 2020 before returning to the Patriots. Last year he was the Patriots’ de facto offensive coordinator, and the result was a mess that led Bill Belichick to bring back Bill O’Brien to run the offense. It’s unclear whether Patricia could return to the Patriots this year in some capacity.

Other candidate for the Broncos’ defensive coordinator job include Rex Ryan and Vance Joseph.

Report: Browns expected to hire Bubba Ventrone as special teams coach



The Browns haven’t announced Bubba Ventrone as their new special teams coordinator, but Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports the team is expected to do just that.

The team interviewed Ventrone and Jets special teams assistant Leon Washington on Wednesday. Giants assistant coach Anthony Blevins also interviewed for the job to replace Mike Priefer, who held the job since 2019 before being fired earlier this month.


Ventrone played for the Browns from 2009-12.

He has spent the past five seasons as the Colts’ special teams coordinator after three seasons as assistant special teams coach of the Patriots.

The Colts have had some of the league’s best special teams with Ventrone.

Indianapolis averaged a league-best 27.8 yards per return on kickoffs and 8.5 yards per return on punts this past season. The Colts’ opponents averaged only 23 yards on kickoff returns last season and 7.4 yards on punt returns.

Eric Bieniemy “fired up and excited” to call plays for Commanders



Eric Bieniemy won two Super Bowls as the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs, so many saw the move to take the same job with the Commanders as a step in the wrong direction for the coach.

Bieniemy had a very different take on things during his introductory press conference on Thursday. Bieniemy said “it’s time for a new challenge” and that he believes “comfort is the enemy of progress” as a coach.


One area where the lateral move represents progress for Bieniemy is in calling offensive plays. Bieniemy did not have those duties while on Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City and he made it clear that he’s looking forward to having that responsibility in Washington.

“I’m fired up for it, bro. Fired up and excited,” Bieniemy said.

Some called Bieniemy’s lack of play-calling experience an obstacle to his pursuit of head coaching jobs despite others making similar moves up the coaching ladder without having that role in the past. Bieniemy can answer any doubts on that front this season and a successful campaign should make it harder for teams to pass on him when openings arise in the future.

NFL Network's Peter Schrager reports the Broncos are hiring Vance Joseph as their defensive coordinator.

 

Matt Nagy is once again the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs.

The Chiefs announced that Nagy will be taking over the job vacated by Eric Bieniemy’s departure for Washington. Nagy held the same position in 2016 and 2017 before being hired as the head coach of the Bears and he was seen as the likeliest candidate to take over the role.


Nagy was fired in Chicago after the 2021 season and returned to the Chiefs a short time later. He had the titles of quarterbacks coach and senior assistant during the 2022 season.

There was no word of interviews for the job after Bieniemy left for the Commanders, but the Rooney Rule mandates that teams interview at least one external minority candidate for coordinator positions so the Chiefs either kept their conversations private or will be hearing from the NFL.
