Presumably that’s because Chris Ballard is trying like hell to find anyone Irsay will want to hire besides Jeff Saturday…
One of the best defensive coaches in football is heading to Miami. The Dolphins have agreed to terms with Vic Fangio to become their next defensive coordinator, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The well-regarded Fangio had other teams interested in him, and according to the report, the Dolphins landed him by making him the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator. Fangio went just 19-30 in three years as the Broncos’ head coach, but he has had success as a defensive coordinator for the Bears, 49ers, Texans and Colts, and he’s a major get for Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins as they attempt to build on a playoff season in 2022 and become Super Bowl contenders in 2023. Cowboys announce departures of Kellen Moore, Doug Nussmeier The Cowboys made it official, announcing the departures of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier. Moore had one year left on his contract, and Nussmeier’s contract was expiring. “After continuing through our end of season review process and having additional discussion, Kellen and the Cowboys reached a mutual decision to part ways,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. “I want to thank Kellen for his deep commitment, hard work and dedication that were a core part of his time with the Cowboys. The production of our offense and his mentorship of Dak [Prescott] were at the center of Kellen’s impact, and we are grateful for his tenure and leadership. We wish Kellen and his wife, Julie, and their family the absolute best as they set out on the next chapter of their lives.” “We also wish Doug and his wife, Christi, and their family the best. Doug is the consummate professional and brought a level of football insight, enthusiasm and focus to work every day that helped everyone he worked with during his time here with the Cowboys perform at a higher level.” McCarthy is expected to take over the play-calling, something he did in his time as the Packers’ head coach. When he arrived in Dallas in 2020, McCarthy kept Moore as offensive coordinator and play-caller. The Cowboys twice ranked first in yards (2019, 2021) and once ranked first in points (2021) with Moore calling the plays. They were 11th in yards and fourth in points this season, but they have not gotten beyond the divisional round since 1995, and Prescott threw a career-high 15 interceptions in the regular season and two more last week in the loss to the 49ers. Moore should not have a hard time finding another job. PFT

Report: Texans to meet with 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans Monday afternoon The Houston Texans are getting ever so close to naming their sixth full-time coach in team history. According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, the Texans and San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans could meet as soon as Monday afternoon once he takes care of all of his responsibilities with the team, which lost 31-7 to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. If the meeting goes well, a deal could be in place to hire Ryans as soon as Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest. Ryans has been one of the Texans’ prime candidates throughout the process. Initially the former 2006 second-round pick had little interest returning to the Texans, but eventually warmed up throughout the process. SI
Report: Chargers are expected to hire Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator It looks like former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore won’t be out of a job long. Shortly after word of Moore’s departure broke on Sunday, there was word that the Chargers planned to speak with him about their offensive coordinator vacancy. A report on Monday indicates things have moved beyond a conversation. NFL Media now reports that the Chargers are expected to hire Moore to run their offense. He will replace Joe Lombardi, who was fired after the Chargers lost to the Jaguars in the playoffs this month, and the hope in L.A. will be that his arrival results in bigger and better things from a unit that was not productive enough despite the presence of quarterback Justin Herbert. Moore will get a chance to catch up with the Cowboys next season as Dallas will make a visit to SoFi Stadium during the regular season. PFT ___________ _____________________ That was fast.
Report: Cardinals will interview Mike Kafka on Tuesday The Cardinals will interview Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports. Kafka also is a candidate for the Colts’ head coaching job, and he previously interviewed with the Panthers and Texans. The Panthers hired former Colts head coach Frank Reich, and the Texans appear poised to hire 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. Kafka, 35, was a first-time play-caller in 2022 after rookie head coach Brian Daboll entrusted those duties to him. Kafka began his NFL coaching career with the Chiefs in 2017, earning a promotion to quarterbacks coach in 2018-19 and added the title of passing game coordinator in 2020. The Cardinals also have scheduled interviews with Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan for Wednesday and Thursday resepctively. They have completed interviews with Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Steelers senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach Brian Flores, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and former Saints head coach Sean Payton. Report: Bucs will interview Todd Monken on Tuesday The Buccaneers are scheduled to interview Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken on Tuesday, NFL Media reports. Monken interviewed for the Ravens’ offensive coordinator job last week. He has held the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UGA since 2020. Monken spent the 2016-18 seasons as the Bucs’ offensive coordinator before going to Cleveland, where he was the Browns’ offensive coordinator in 2019. Monken’s other experience is in the college ranks. The Bucs fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich on Jan. 19, one of nine vacancies they have to fill on their coaching staff for 2023. They have interviewed Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher, = Vikings wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell and Broncos passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Klint Kubiak for the offensive coordinator opening. The Bucs have requested an interview with Giants quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney. PFT
Jeff Nixon set to interview for Cowboys offensive coordinator The Cowboys plan to have head coach Mike McCarthy call their offensive plays in 2023, but they are also planning to hire a new offensive coordinator to replace Kellen Moore. Joseph Person of TheAthletic.com reports that Panthers running backs coach/assistant head coach Jeff Nixon will be one of the candidates to interview for that opening. Nixon is not currently listed as a member of Frank Reich’s staff in Carolina, but he spent the last three seasons with the team. He was the interim offensive coordinator in 2021 after Joe Brady was fired and he added the assistant head coach title ahead of the 2022 season. The Cowboys had former Jets, Rams, and Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer on staff as an analyst in 2022 and he’s been mentioned as another coordinator candidate in Dallas. PFT ____________ _____________________ He's not a crook either.
Dave Canales set for second Ravens offensive coordinator interview The Ravens may be moving closer to finding their next offensive coordinator. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Seahawks quarterbacks coach Dave Canales will have a second interview for the vacancy. It’s the first word about a candidate moving on to a second interview with the team. Canales has been on the Seahawks staff since 2010 and has also served as the team’s wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at points in his tenure. His work with Geno Smith during the 2022 season likely helped push him into the mix for a move up the coaching ladder. While Canales will be meeting with the team a second time, the Ravens are reportedly still having initial conversations with candidates. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that Bills wide receivers coach Chad Hall will interview for the position on Wednesday. PFT
The Vikings have not hired a new defensive coordinator since firing Ed Donatell and part of the reason for that appears to be their desire to interview someone who is still up for head coaching jobs. Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports that the Vikings want to interview Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for the position. Evero interviewed for the head coaching openings for several teams, including the Broncos, Cardinals, and Colts. The Broncos are set to hire Sean Payton, but the other two teams have not tabbed new head coaches yet and Evero remains in the running. In addition to that, the Broncos previously denied the Falcons permission to interview Evero but that position could change with Payton expected to take over in Denver. Minnesota has interviewed Ryan Nielsen, Sean Desai, Mike Pettine, and Brian Flores for the opening. Nielsen was hired by the Falcons and Flores is also a candidate in Arizona. PFT
Vic Fangio has decided to join Dolphins’ staff, after weighing other offers The deal that was supposedly done four days ago appears to finally be done for real. Vic Fangio has agreed to become the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. That deal was reported to be done on Sunday, but Fangio himself made clear after the reports surfaced that he had made no such agreement. Fangio was also linked to the defensive coordinator vacancies on both the 49ers and the Broncos. Fangio has been consulting with the Eagles this season, and he may continue to do so through the Super Bowl before beginning work in Miami. Colts may conduct a third round of head-coaching interviews The Colts don’t appear close to wrapping up their lengthy head-coaching search. Although Colts owner Jim Irsay and General Manager Chris Ballard may still have some second interviews to conduct, they may bring in a few finalists for a third round of interviews as well, according to NFL Network. The interview process has been exhaustive, with some interviews taking 12 hours, according to the report. The Colts’ long list of candidates whose names have come up during the process includes Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Colts special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, Packers special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia and Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan. Evero, Morris, Bisaccia, Martindale, Steichen, Callahan and Glenn are all among those who have had second interviews. It’s unclear whether any other coaches are getting second interviews, and which coaches may get third interviews. There’s a perception among many in the league that Irsay wants to hire Jeff Saturday, the former Colts center who finished the season as their interim head coach, and that the longer this goes, the better chance Saturday has. It appears that the process is going long. PFT __________ __________________ Irsay has yet to contact me. Im going to have my people call his people. Im not real happy about being skipped over either... think I'll file a law suit or something.
Report: Texans interview Patriots TE coach Nick Caley for offensive coordinator One would not expect the Houston Texans to look for another New England Patriots assistant to bring to Space City, but that could be the case with new coach DeMeco Ryans. According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, the Texans interviewed Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley for their offensive coordinator position. Caley, 40, does have the one calling card that is good with general manager Nick Caserio in that both were graduates of John Carroll University just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Caley has been on the Patriots’ staff since 2015 in a variety of roles, most of which have included coaching the tight ends. The Texans finished 30th in points and 31st in total offense last season under Pep Hamilton. SI
