Giants interviewing Adam Peters, Ran Carthon Monday Nine candidates to be the next Giants General Manager have been identified over the last week and they’ll wrap up initial interviews with that group on Monday. According to multiple reports, the team will speak to a pair of executives from the 49ers. Assistant G.M. Adam Peters and director of player personnel Ran Carthon will be meeting with the team. Peters has been with the Niners for five years and had a long run with the Broncos before moving to the NFC West team. Carthon, who is the son of former Giant Maurice Carthon, has also been with the 49ers since 2017. Once those two interviews are done, the Giants are expected to move onto another round of interviews with finalists for the job. They have not started interviewing head coaching candidates yet and that process is expected to follow the hiring of their new General Manager. PFT
Vikings interviewed Nathaniel Hackett, interviewing Catherine Raîche Monday The Vikings continue to make their way through the searches for their new head coach and General Manager. The team announced that they completed an interview with Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett on Sunday. With the Packers on a bye this week, Hackett also spoke with the Bears and Broncos about their openings in recent days. Minnesota requested interviews with several other assistants whose teams were playing on Wild Card weekend. Those coaches will now be eligible to interview with the team. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team will also interview Eagles vice president of football operations Catherine Raîche for their G.M. opening on Monday. They interviewed Titans director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort on Sunday. PFT
Bears set to interview Eliot Wolf for G.M. on Tuesday The Bears are currently interviewing candidates for both head coach and General Manager as they look for new leadership in their football operation. That search will continue on Tuesday, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports the Bears will meet with Patriots scouting consultant Eliot Wolf. Wolf has been with the Patriots since March 2020, following his two-year stint as Browns assistant G.M. Wolf spent most of his career with the Packers, working his way up from pro personnel assistant to director of football operations. He is the son of Hall of Famer Ron Wolf, who served as Packers G.M. from 1991-2000. The younger Wolf was a candidate to succeed Ted Thompson as Green Bay’s General Manager, but the job went to Brian Gutekunst. The Bears are casting a wide net in their searches for a new coach and G.M. after firing Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace on Jan. 10. PFT
Broncos set to interview Dan Quinn, Kellen Moore on Tuesday With the Cowboys eliminated from the postseason, their assistant coaches are now free to interview with teams at any time. Their offensive and defensive coordinators could be busy this week. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Broncos will hold in-person interviews with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore on Tuesday. General Manager George Paton will be among the contingent making the trip. Quinn is thought to be a frontrunner for the Denver job. He and Paton shared time with the Dolphins from 2005-2006. Quinn also has drawn interest from the Vikings, Dolphins, Bears, and Jaguars. But Gehlken reports none of those interviews are scheduled as of yet. Quinn declined to interview with the Jaguars during the regular season. Moore did interview with the Jaguars on Jan. 7. PFT
I'm half surprised that McCarthy didn't get fired, especially after defending the call at the end in his post game remarks. Sorry, but that's just a ridiculous call to run it up the middle with less than 14 seconds on the clock and no timeouts. I almost felt sorry for Cowboys fans. lol! Almost...What was Dak thinking on that play? He's been in the league long enough to know that he can't just spot the ball himself??? Not only did he do that, but he even blocked the freaking referee, who was trying like hell to spot the ball for them, out of the way! Such a fail in so many ways. That was amazing self destruction. They had time for two or three shots at the endzone. What a way to see the season end....
Mike Mayock is out as the General Manager of the Las Vegas Raiders. Mayock was informed today that he will not be retained, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The move doesn’t come as a huge shock, given that Mayock was brought in specifically to work with Jon Gruden, the head coach who was fired during the season. The Raiders have reportedly already started lining up interviews to find a replacement for Mayock. Mayock, who lasted three years with the Raiders, was previously NFL Network’s draft expert, and it seems more likely that he’ll return to television than that he’ll get another GM job.
That's a shock! not... What the hell was he doing? Great on TV with his breakdowns and knowledge before he got his big break, but when it came to him in the seat, complete fail in every way imaginable. lol! Cleland, Ruggs, Arnette, Leatherwood??? Get the hell out of here with that weak shit....My 17 year old son could have drafted better than Mayock.
Report: Michigan sources think Jim Harbaugh would take the Raiders job The Raiders are looking for a new head coach. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is looking for a path back to the NFL. Is it a match made in football heaven? Dueling reports from TheAthletic.com paint a dramatically different picture regarding the possibility of Harbaugh returning to the franchise with which he began his coaching career, 20 years ago. Bruce Feldman of TheAthletic.com reports that “multiple sources inside Michigan football” believe that, if Harbaugh is offered the Raiders job, he’d take it. In contrast, Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com suggests that the Raiders aren’t as interested in Harbaugh as perhaps Harbaugh wants the Raiders to be. The reality, as we understand it, is that Harbaugh generally has interest in an NFL return, to the right situation. He’s 58, and he wants to win a Super Bowl. With 25 percent of the league (and perhaps more) looking for a new coach, Harbaugh isn’t restricted to the Raiders. Any of the teams looking for a coach could do a lot worse than a guy who immediately turned a 6-10 49ers team into a contender, and who went 44-19-1 in four seasons in San Francisco. Could it be the Raiders? Sure. Could it be another team with a vacancy? Why not. Could it ultimately be, say, the Cardinals and a return to the NFC West, if they move on from Kliff Kingsbury? Two games per year against the 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams would be compelling, to say the least. PFT
Vikings complete interview with Eliot Wolf The Vikings have finished their seventh interview for General Manager. Minnesota announced on Thursday that the club completed an interview with Patriots scouting consultant Eliot Wolf for the vacancy. Wolf has spent the last two seasons in his role with the Patriots. Before that, he was the Browns’ assistant General Manager for two years. The son of former Packers G.M. Ron Wolf, Eliot came up in the Packers organization, starting there in 2004 as a pro personnel assistant. He worked his way up to director of football operations in 2016 and was a candidate to succeed Ted Thompson as the club’s G.M. But that job ultimately went to Brian Gutekunst. Wolf has also interviewed with the Bears for their vacancy at General Manager. The Vikings fired Rick Spielman on January 10. PFT ________ ____________________ Interesting... will the Wilf's hire a wolf?
Bears interview Reggie McKenzie, Byron Leftwich The Bears interviewed Reggie McKenzie and Byron Leftwich on Thursday, the team announced. McKenzie is one of at least 10 candidates for the General Manager job to replace Ryan Pace; Leftwich became the seventh coaching candidate to interview with the team to replace Matt Nagy. McKenzie boasts 28 years of experience as an NFL executive, including the past three as a senior personnel executive with the Dolphins. He previously spent 18 seasons with the Packers as a pro personnel assistant (1994-96), pro personnel director (1997-2007) and director of football operations (2008-11). McKenzie left Green Bay in 2012 to become the Raiders’ General Manager. McKenzie held that job through 2018. Leftwich is in his third season as the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator. He started his coaching career with the Cardinals as an intern in 2016 before being promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2017. Leftwich played nine NFL seasons as a quarterback with the Jaguars (2003-06), Falcons (2007), Steelers (2008, 2010, 2012) and Buccaneers (2009). PFT
Report: Bears to interview Dennis Allen for head coach The Chicago Bears will interview New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen for their head coach opening next week, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. The Bears are the first team to express interest in Allen this coaching cycle. The Philadelphia Eagles interviewed Allen for their open position last year before hiring Nick Sirianni. Allen spent three years as head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 2012-14. He joined the Saints as a defensive assistant in 2015 before taking over the coordinator role beginning in 2016. After ranking last in the league in points allowed in 2015 and and second-to-last in 2016, the team made massive improvements under Allen. They’ve been in the top half of the league in points allowed in each of the last five seasons with three years inside the top 10 and two straight seasons inside the top five. New Orleans ranked fifth in points allowed last season and fourth in total yards. They improved to fourth in points allowed and were seventh in total yards this season. The Bears interviewed Reggie McKenzie on Thursday as part of their search for a new general manager. McKenzie was the G.M. in Oakland in 2014 when Allen was hired as Raiders head coach. Chicago has already interviewed Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathanial Hackett, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson and former Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell. ****BREAKNG**** Giants hire Joe Schoen as GM Joe Schoen is the next General Manager of the New York Giants. Schoen has officially been hired, the team announced. Formerly the Bills’ assistant general manager, Schoen was the first candidate to be brought in for a second interview, which was a good indication that the Giants considered him their favorite candidate. The 42-year-old Schoen got a job as a ticket office intern with the Panthers in 2000 after finishing a college football career at DePauw University, and he has had various jobs around the league ever since. He has spent the last five years with the Bills and has previously been in the Dolphins’ front office. PFT
The Ravens will have a new defensive coordinator for the 2022 season. The team released a statement from head coach John Harbaugh on Friday that announced the departure of Don “Wink” Martindale. “After several productive conversations, Don and I have agreed to move forward in separate directions,” Harbaugh said. “We have had a great run on defense, and I am very proud of what has been accomplished and the work he has done. Don has been a major contributor to the success of our defense since 2012, and especially since he became defensive coordinator four years ago. He has done a great job. Now it is time to pursue other opportunities. Sometimes the moment comes, and it’s the right time. I am personally grateful for our friendship and for everything he has done in Baltimore.” Martindale joined the Ravens in 2012 as their linebackers coach and moved into the coordinator role in 2018. The Ravens finished 19th in points allowed and 25th in yards allowed this season, both of which were the lowest rankings since Martindale became the team’s coordinator. PFT
The Bears interviewed Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles for their General Manager vacancy on Friday and it appears to have gone well. Poles is set for a second interview with the team early next week. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that the interview is currently scheduled for Tuesday. The Bears aren’t the only NFC North team showing interest in Poles. He’s also set for a second interview with the Vikings next week. Minnesota is also set to interview Browns vice president of football operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah a second time. Poles was also one of three finalists for the Giants G.M. job that went to Joe Schoen. Based on how things are going with the Bears and Vikings, Poles may also wind up with a new job before the carousel stops spinning. PFT
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have targeted two finalists for their general manager job: Cleveland vice president of football operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kansas City executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles. According to a person with knowledge of the process, speaking Friday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team was not announcing the requests, the Vikings have invited both Adofo-Mensah and Poles for a second interview. The Vikings conducted initial meetings with Adofo-Mensah (Monday) and Poles (Tuesday) in their first round of virtual interviews with eight candidates for the opening created Jan. 10 when Rick Spielman was fired after 16 years with the organization. Owner and president Mark Wilf said the Vikings would seek a diverse set of candidates for the job, and both Adofo-Mensah and Poles are Black. The 40-year-old Adofo-Mensah has degrees from Princeton and Stanford and worked as Wall Street trader before entering the NFL in 2013 with San Francisco in research and development. After seven seasons with the 49ers, Adofo-Mensah was hired by the Browns in 2020. The 36-year-old Poles played offensive tackle at Boston College and is in his 13th season with the Chiefs, his first in his current role. He was a finalist last year for Carolina’s general manager vacancy and a finalist again this week with the New York Giants, who hired Buffalo assistant general manager Joe Schoen instead for their open job. Both Adofo-Mensah and Poles have also interviewed with Chicago this month. The Bears have yet to fill their vacancy. The Vikings also conducted head coach interviews Friday with Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell. They’ve met virtually with seven candidates in the first round of talks, with one interview remaining with San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. The 49ers, Buccaneers and Rams all have divisional round playoff games this weekend. Wilf has said the general manager hire, naturally, would come first to give that person significant input into the critical decision of picking the next head coach.
Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler is calling it a career. Butler told the team he is retiring, the team announced. “It is an emotional day as I announce I am retiring from my football coaching career,” Butler said in a statement. “I have spent every year since 1990 as a coach in the NFL and the NCAA, but the time is right for me to walk away after a successful career both playing and coaching the game I love. “I want to thank the Rooney Family, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin and all the coaches and players that I have been involved with over my entire coaching career. I look forward to spending more time with my family, whom have been so supportive of me throughout the years. I wish nothing but the best to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and I will be cheering them on during my retirement.” The 65-year-old Butler has been the Steelers’ defensive coordinator since 2015 and was their linebackers coach for 12 seasons before he got promoted to defensive coordinator. His departure represents a significant change for the Steelers’ defense. The Steelers have not said who will replace Butler, although secondary coach Teryl Austin has previously been mentioned as a potential successor. PFT
Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has come up with winning game plans the last two weeks and he’s moved himself into consideration for at least one head coaching job. Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Giants are interviewing Anarumo for their head coaching vacancy on Sunday morning. It’s the first time Anarumo’s name has come up in conjunction with a head coaching job. PFT
The Panthers officially have their new offensive coordinator. Word last Friday was that the Panthers would be hiring former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo to run the offense under head coach Matt Rhule and the team officially announced the hiring on Monday afternoon. McAdoo takes over after the Panthers fired Joe Brady midway through his second season with the team. He brings a lot more experience to the team than Brady did as he was the offensive coordinator for the Giants before being bumped up to the top job after Tom Coughlin’s departure. McAdoo made the playoffs in his first season, but was fired after a 2-10 start to the 2017 season. McAdoo was the Jaguars’ quarterback coach in 2020 and a consultant for the Cowboys this season. He inherits an offense that finished 29th in points and 30th in yards during the 2021 season. They may get more than seven games from running back Christian McCaffrey next season, but his return to health might not mean much if they can’t upgrade the play at the quarterback position beyond what Sam Darnold, Cam Newton, and P.J. Walker provided.
