The Gonchar signing/trade stinks of higher intervention.

That's a move for the sake of winning and putting cheeks in the seats even if it's a bad idea long term.
Depending on the business plan, I don't think it's all that bad. Besides, like Jagr, he may hold solid trade value at a deadline this year or next.

Whether its the Fabulous Hawks or the Ugly Bruins that win it all, I just want a seven game series with maybe some OT mixed in here and there.

  3. maybe but if it takes 5 mill per to sign a 39 yr old retread whos gonna want to deal with that contract come trade deadline. If I had 5 mill to blow on a player or players thats the last guy Im lookin for. Gonchar has sucked since he left Pitt, hes pulling a Kovalev and milking it for all he can. this guy is hardly worth a roster spot, Nill dropped the ball on this one. prove me wrong Sergei and go out and get 15+ goals and 40 + pts - not gonna happen....but if he does Ill eat the humble pie if Pen fan has any left over

Where do you spend the 5 million? If you spend big on a wing, there is no hope of unloading them because the market is flooded. I don't think it's a good contract, but given Dallas' situation on the ice and developing their brand, I think it was a necessary move. Streit is going to get ridiculous money for more years. White is no good because they have Daley already. Most of the rest of the talent on the blueline available won't be of much use on the PP.

There is almost no way that I see Gonchar living up to his contract. The new owner has to revitalize the franchise and let the agents out there know Dallas has ownership that wants to win and is willing to spend money to do so. I just don't see that much of a downside. Dallas gets headlines before everybody else, the agents know it's a franchise to have their clients consider again, and it's a short term contract. They don't have cap concerns. It's not a Myers or Ward or Kopecky contract.

  5. If your pinning your hopes of revitalizing a franchise - at all, then how does this make sense. there wont be any excitement over this, laughter if anything. and what is their brand? signing guys at 39 for this type of money may have made some sense back before the salary cap but not now. maybe this franchise is more desperate than I thought. I dont see it Bob but Ive been wrong plenty of times before

Big loss for the leafs, I would've preferred that he stepped up to coach the leafs, but, its hard to argue with carlyle, although, he gets credit for players like kadri, hamilton and fraser.

Whew on Dallas Eakins front, good young coach in Mactavishville.
I am disappointed in the semis, I wanted moar hockey.
    I predict Hawks in 5.
I also predicted bettguins in 3. Not much of a soothsayer.
The backchecking the Hawks do will slow the b's offense down.

  9. rediiis Guest

Creative fans of the b's will tell you that lucic and chara are the bestest two players in the world and that rask is invicible. I have watched the Hawks all season, without Q tinkering with lines they have been unbeatable. I can't see the Hawks losing.

    ubervincible, sorry

I have to agree with cutter on the Gonchar signing, I despise old slow defensemen that can only score if on the pp and they have an offensive face off win, he is the commagonchar

Think of it in terms of the Huet signing for the Hawks. It's a signal that the franchise is to be taken more seriously by the fans, media, players, and agents. This is about a much bigger picture than a few pts in the standings.

As it happens, there is no way that Gonchar is worse than that bum Goligoski, so he does fill a need and he will improve the Stars when he plays. All this costs the hockey operations side is a slip of a few spots in the 2014 draft, they aren't in danger of exceeding their budget or hugging the cap. Besides, that Jagr contract worked out pretty well for them at the end of the day on the hockey operations side. Of course the big picture (business) would have been better served by making the postseason, and Jagr may have gotten them there.

Anyway, I don't like Gonchar too much, I hate his contract, but I can see more good than bad for the franchise coming out of it on multiple levels, most of those are off the ice though.

  13. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

lol, I'm not disagreeing with you.

If he helps develop offensive zone executions and if he gets a few more FAs to notice the franchise, a few more sponsors to respond to pitches, and a few more headlines, it's money well spent.

It's Dallas, they're at the point where goals are worth more than points anyway.

this just in Bettman has passed the first rule change Ive evar liked. this is now mandatory attire for women attending the finals. fat/ugly chicks will not be allowed to attend.........here comes the flag

Muzz sighting. Not too many players can score 300+ goals in the NHL w/out being able to skate. Made Bigfat look like Gartner.

Bob, i dont have much time today but I will reply to your SC post soon. You might be right about the uglyness of the Broons, ok not might be right, you are right. Our goalie looks like a tall lesbian alien, our captain looks like he's a 6'9 Mongol, our 1st line LW looks like a Neanderthal, and our scrappy little rat looks like a scrappy little rat. Our coach has a gorgeous fat head though.

    Broons in 9.

  17. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

lol matty. I actually dig Julien's appearance. I forgot to take things there on Rask.

Boston in 9 is a solid prediction. It offers a chance to use my favorite Dave Wannestedt quote of all time (in the case of a loss)
"we just ran out of games"

  18. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

It's too bad I'll have to watch the finals on mute. I might lose it the first time Edzo and Pierre complain about the officiating or when Pierre makes some useless reference to Shawn Thornton's teammates in Norfolk 10 years ago.

    Storylines I'll looking forward to:

The Hawks chirping at the Thornton as he was bleeding all over the place and Thornton's righteous indignation. Whole thing started because he challenged the gentle Fernando Pisani to throw down.

The stories of Blackhawks and Bruins that played with Blackhawks and Bruins that are no longer on the rosters. Maybe a story about how Marty Havlat played with Chara in Ottawa for example.

Maybe we'll go from Krug's time at Mich ST and how he played with Dean Chelios, the oldest son of Chris...because Chris was a Blackhawk

Maybe the bond between Sharp and Seidenberg because they played in PHI's system together.

What other ridiculous storylines can we expect beginning on Wed?

  19. this is a horrible time of the year, leading up to a worse time. no hockey last night, none tonight, and soon to be none for 4 months. there should be laws.

  20. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    I hate the long break.

Things should be pretty much retarded in another 24 hours. Apologies if I offended any of my retarded friends out there.
