Gallant to be hired as coach of Rangers
Will replace Quinn, led Golden Knights to Cup Final in 2018

Gerard Gallant has agreed to be the next coach of the New York Rangers, a team source said Monday.

Gallant replaces David Quinn, who was fired May 12 after the Rangers (27-23-6) finished fifth in the eight-team MassMutual East Division and failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

As coach of the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18, their inaugural season, Gallant guided them to the Stanley Cup Final when they lost to the Washington Capitals in five games. He won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year that season.

The 57-year-old is 270-216-51 with four ties in 541 NHL games for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers and Golden Knights. He was fired by Vegas on Jan. 15, 2020, after going 118-75-20 in three seasons.

"Obviously, it's been 16 months. I'm waiting for the next opportunity and I hope it comes soon," Gallant told The Athletic on June 7. "Not sure what's it going to be. I'm having conversations with some teams and hopefully something happens."

He was a favorite of mine on the Red Wings... good player, coach and hockey mind... very down to earth and funny too. I hope the best for him and he does have a good track record.

I think the Rangers just became seriously good contenders.

Gallant was a very good player for the Red Wings, scored a lot of goals and he also played for the Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL.

I think the Rangers just became seriously good contenders.

He will help for sure and they are just waiting to Bust Out.

The Rangers have a lot of talent. The problem with Gallant is that he usually rubs higher-ups the wrong way (from what I've been able to tell). So we'll see if his NYR tenure is longer than his usual stays...

Its shaping up to being 2 great series for the right to play in the Cup Finals. Both series tied at 1 and lots of hitting and fiesty play... im really enjoying this. 4 very well coached teams with high-powered offenses and the goaltending aint to shabby either. Should make for great Cup.

8 o'clock est start tonight for the Islanders vs Lightning tilt...

I agree Will........But I picked Colorado to win the Cup......and I picked Toronto vs Edmonton for the North Final......JEZZ everybody went home early.

Will I just can't cheer for the Habs..........BUT it has been years since a Canadian Team Hoisted Lord Stanley's Grail......1994

My Canucks came oh so close in 2011 only to lose on Home ice to the Bruins.

I'm thinking both these Semis are going to go 7.

VGK dumps Montreal in Montreal to even that series at 2. I didnt like the DeBoer benching of MAF, but it worked out... Lehner was good.

Im not positive, but I think that was the first win ever by the Knights in Montreal.

These two series are giving me more than I thought they would - I thought TB and VGK would cruise through. I think Lehner is the better goalie right now, so I'm glad he got out there.
