I know that Tyler Wong is not the first Asian man to play in the NHL, but do you think this kid could PR hockey into a growing Asian market like Jeremy Lin did for the NBA?

I hear "Straight To Hell" by the Clash in the Bettman tribute... after the techno/goal horn thingy.

Supposedly there's some asian kids coming in from california that were drafted.

Wong was on the marlies last year, his numbers exploded in the WHL.

Without a doubt, just the sheer numbers of asians in the world, names like Wong or Chan could be commonplace in twenty years.

I'm not sure what the knights plans are for Wong, he put on a good impression last night.

Not too many Asian hockey programs in Asia is there? I would think most of the Asians are going to be imports and transplants from Canada and the USA. Just happens to be a few Asians breaking in by coming up through the North American system, no?

Bottom line... I just don't see or particularly care for trying to market Asia... I just don't get that line of thinking.

Everybody remembers the Paul Kariya experiment, he was the face of the Nagano olympics. Lately, there have been some japanese names popping up.

In the US, there's some large communities on the west coast that have been inspired by the nhl teams that play there.

Over here in Canada ever since the UK handed back hong kong, there's been exploding communities in and around Toronto and Vancouver. When these communities start to mature into 3rd generation, you'll see a lot more asian kids that were born in Canada coming into the league.

The biggest requirement nowadays to put a kid in hockey are the funds, a lot of asians aren't lacking the funds.

There was a time when Alex Delvecchio was the only italian in the nhl, now there's probably 40 that come from that heritage, canada and the US.

No one can survive on that. I wonder why its such a low figure? Got any idea, Skinny?

  15. skinny123 Guest

I think it has to do with him only playing 23 games in the NHL, the figure could've gone up, I haven't heard from his brother in over twenty years. His career was done by 25, I'm sure he's moved on to other career paths. Grapes was his coach, he said "Where has this guy been my whole life", lol, then he sent him down.lol

Speaking of Grapes... I miss him and Ron. Glad their back soon. Been a big fan forever.

I also like the way Canada covers the NHL. Its way better than NBCSN and such. HNIC and SN are by far head n shoulders above the USA. I understand that's a matter of opinion, but I see both nightly and just love the way the CBC and Rodgers has things set up.

Its also engrained in my soul. I grew up in Toledo on the SW shores of Lake Erie and used to pull in CBC Windsor 9 as a kid... grew up with the Canadian side of things.

I don't really get to see much of the american side, I like that NBC took on a more aggressive role with their games of the week later in the season.

As a kid, I remember being able to watch sabre games, that was real cool. There was more exposure to the sabres on tv in the 70s than today.

$125 seems terribly low. that's scary. that's not even meal money to retire on. my brother's college roommate played in minor league baseball and the major leagues for several years. won a AAA Championship too for Rochester (the ring was huge). I think bc MLB has ton's of money, his pension is like $250,000 yearly. I know he played the minimum 5 yrs to be qualified for it.

Cable tv came my way in 1980! So HBO and ESPN were just starting out. Philly had their own cable channel or company called PRISM - Philadelphia Regional in Sports & Movies. The thing was - most of Philly couldn't get it for years. We lived on a road that went into Philly across the border of Bucks County, but we were on the Bucks County side of the line. We had cable since 1980. People who lived on the street that was the borderline didn't have cable for 10 yrs after we had it. 5 - 10 feet of difference and no cable tv. Imagine that?

They showed all the Flyers Playoff games, so a ton of my brothers buddies came over in 1987 to watch the Finals bc only bars had PRISM. Most homes did not unless they were outside the city and paid for it. People were like "paying for cable tv?" "Why, I have tv and it's free."

The first big movie in 1980 HBO was showcasing for it's network to air - Star Wars, which came out in 1977. haha.
