Housley will not be on the hot seat at any point this season. It is, in fact, too early to be discussing Housley's job security.

The only basis for discussing it is an ignorance of the Sabres situation.

If the sabres are near the bottom by the end of january, fans will be questioning him. It comes with the territory, part of the package.

Pegula most likely will give him the whole year, unless it's a real pathetic situation. The critics will be on him in february, only salvage he has is his nostalgia in the city.

I am all over the Oiler job, after that highly motivated suckass effort versus the Redwings at home. Another is Gully's security in Calgary, might have some prob's if they do not win more. Montreal's Julien is fun.

Oiler fans will be bursting blood vessels if they keep this up.

Matty-i would take him back in 2 seconds ! I always said those 1990 teams with Eric Lindros and John LeClair and others needed a hardass like Keenan to get them to the Cup Finals and win it. It never happened, but I always wish it did.

I just hope he goes to Philly soon so no one gets the notion he should come back to the Sabres' organization.

I really can't believe I am hearing the name Mike Keenan and the NHL, but I was wrong about Torts also.

The video of the stick throw wasnt a big deal, I was expecting much more.
Everyone has seen a coach lose it more than that. Either way, a fun graph^.

Ken Hitchcock retires from coaching; who will Dallas Stars hire next?

Ken Hitchcock announced his retirement from coaching on Friday after 22 NHL seasons and will now take on a role as a consultant with the Dallas Stars.

Hitchcock, who led the Stars to the 1999 Stanley Cup and retires with the third-most wins all-time among NHL head coaches (823), had an original plan of hanging them up following the 2016-17 season with the St. Louis Blues. That didn’t happen as he was fired 50 games into the year, and while assisting other coaches around the league with X’s and O’s talks during his time away, a spark was reignited.

“They thought I was helping them but they were helping me,” Hitchcock said a year ago today during his introductory news conference when he returned to coach the Stars.

A multi-year deal was signed and Hitchcock’s plan suddenly shifted, but the move to an advisor/consultant role whenever he was done coaching was always in the cards. The Stars ended up missing the playoffs for the second straight season, a sign that a new direction was needed.

In a letter published on Friday, Hitchcock said his goodbyes, thanking the organizations he worked for and the people he worked with before acknowledging hockey fans.

“This great game does not happen without you. Every city I coached in, I was lucky to be surrounded by dedicated, knowledgeable, passionate hockey fans,” he wrote. “I enjoyed being behind the bench but I will miss walking the streets and seeing the fans the most.”

Aside from the wins and the Cup ring, Hitchcock, a slam-dunk Hall of Famer, also won a Jack Adams Award and led teams to two Presidents’ Trophies. Internationally, he coached Canada to a silver medal at the 2008 IIHF World Championships and was an associate coach for the Canadian Olympic team five times, helping them to win three gold medals (2002, 2010, 2014). He also earned gold as an assistant for Canada’s teams at the 2002 Worlds and 1982 World Junior Championship.

Now that there’s an opening, which way will general manager Jim Nill go for a new head coach? (NBC)

Gully is fired in Cowtown. Treliving is grasping at straws, needs quick fix to keep his job in Calgary.

"We relied too much on too few," Treliving said. "Certainly the lack of depth, or the lack of contributions by many, was a big part of the problem we had. "Burke was gone 2004 before AV became coach of Vancouver in 2006, so there is no history there. I liked the quote by "We relied too much on too few," Treliving said. Bill Peters opts out of contract to leave Hurricanes; next stop Calgary?

Bill Peters had until Friday to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract, freeing him from the final year of his deal with the Carolina Hurricanes. He did just that, and will now hit the open market with the Calgary Flames a heavy favorite for his next landing spot.

“I have a lot of respect for Bill as a person and coach,” said Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon said in a statement. “We thank him for his time with the Hurricanes and wish him success in whatever comes next.”

With $1.6 million guaranteed for next season if he stayed in Carolina, Peters wouldn’t be leaving without having a good idea that he’ll be able to step into another job this off-season. At the moment, there are head coaching openings with the Flames, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers.

Dundon wasn’t against Peters staying for the duration of his contract, as he’s shown he prefers keeping people around who have term left rather than firing them (Hi, Ron Francis!). But with Peters resigning, the Hurricanes are off the hook now for that $1.6 million.

So where will Peters land? Well, the Flames have been the big favorite for a while, and the rumor mill sped up on Tuesday when Calgary decided to fire Glen Gulutzan after two seasons. General manager Brad Treliving said he wanted someone with NHL experience as a replacement and Peters would come to Alberta with a 137-138-53 record in four seasons with the Hurricanes, which includes zero playoff appearances.

It’s easy to tie Peters to the Calgary job. He’s from the area, worked with Treliving during the 2016 World Championships and got his start coaching in the Western Hockey League. It seems like it’s only a matter of time now.

As for the Hurricanes, they now have openings at GM and head coach. Team president Don Waddell is acting as interim GM during the search process. Rod Brind’Amour, who was one of Peters’ assistants, has seen his name out there as a potential replacement, same for the team’s assistant GM and AHL head coach Mike Vellucci. Both would come cheaper than what Alain Vigneault, Dave Tippett, Dan Bylsma or potentially Barry Trotz would command, so given Dundon’s methods so far, that just might be the direction they go. That was an odd situation and set of circumstances that took place. I don't know how he survived the Hurricanes without getting fired and now he's got the gig in Calgary. Peters is one lucky dude. Seems like some communication between Calgary and Peters was underway before he barely had time to clear out his desk.

Ya they must’ve started this convo the day the season ended.
He did a good job in Carolina considering the roster and organizational instability.

Hurricanes stay in-house, name Brind’Amour head coach, Waddell GM

Rod Brind’Amour told the News and Observer last month that his learning capacity as an assistant coach had maxed out and he was ready for the next step: to become an NHL head coach.

After working with two Carolina Hurricanes head coaches since 2012, Brind’Amour will finally get that shot.

The Hurricanes announced on Tuesday that Brind’Amour will be their new new head coach. It continues the off-season of change in Carolina that saw Bill Peters leave for the Calgary Flames and Ron Francis get fired from his job as president of hockey operations and replaced by longtime NHL executive Rick Dudley.

Also in the press release was the little nugget that Don Waddell, who had been serving as interim general manager since Francis was canned, has the role full-time now as well as the title of president.

“Rod is the greatest leader in the history of this franchise, and has earned the opportunity to take charge of our locker room,” said Waddell in a statement. “We spoke to a number of candidates for this position, but our conversations with staff and players consistently returned to the same person. Rod’s fresh ideas, ability to motivate and understanding of what it takes to bring a championship to Raleigh will help our young team take the next step toward competing to bring the Cup back to North Carolina.
