Providence is a fun little city. seems like the identity is tied to the locals desire to all be good fellas. great restaurants and strip clubs, as previously mentioned around these parts. R.I. guys are under the strange assumption that they're the epicenter of American hockey for some reason. Ron Wilson, Bryan Berard, RI Reds, Lamoriello, Mt St Charles, blablalblah.
I've recently heard reports of good strip joints in P-town, but have not seen it to prove that to myself. Sounds to me as though the A needs P-town. I thought some savvy team would stick their farm in SLC. I thought Phoenix or Denver were most likely before Vegas gets their chance. I like the move to Tucson, kinda like the Yotes giving everyone the middle finger. Hockey has been good for Arizona, and this makes AZ better for hockey. I expect the Rats to scurry out of Albany. For no good reason at all that's a shitty hockey town. I'd love to see Glens Falls back in the A since Adirondack is a solid market. Utica ain't forever, that's fer sure. Abbottsford makes too much sense for the Nucks. And, lastly, Fresno is still waiting for their team.
I saw games in Glen Falls during their last year with the Wings. It was either 98 or 99. The immortal Doug Houda and number 1 pick Jesse Wallin were there. I don't remember any NHL standout from those games. We would drive from Balston Spa to go watch them get slaughtered. It was pretty much just a goon farm from what I saw, but then so were most of the affiliates at that time. I was happy because it was a Wings affiliate. I loved that area though.
I think Tom Barasso is from RI. I wouldn't be too proud of that since his name and barasshole are fittingly similar.
Barrasso is from Stow, Ma, same as pumpkinhead actually, and played at TEH ACTON-BOXBOROUGH H.S.! i say it so enthusiastically in caps because it's the last place where I coached. Barrasso wouldn't even return our calls to get him to come to any fundraisers or even sign a stick or jersey. At A/B I found a box of old jerseys and a Barrasso-era #35, thought I found the jersey so I snagged it on my way out. Came to find out that Barrasso wore #30 in H.S.
Burke was a linemate of ron wilson on a team coached by lamoriello, the friars. Talk about old school connections.
Portland, ME sank about $30MM a couple of years ago into their arena. The Pirates did not hold up their part of the deal and were consistently near the bottom of AHL attendance. Well, that's that, and they're gone. Probably off to Springfield since the Falcons flew off to Tucson, AZ.
Toronto Marlies KO the Albany Devils in the AHL ECF 4-3 in Game 7. Face the Hershey Bears next. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/ahl/marlies-advance-east-final-game-7-win-devils/
Those baby Leafs are a beast. I've been following the AHL longer than the NHL, and I can remember some dominating teams over the years. The Marlies are near the top of the list and they're not doing it due to overaged NHL wannabes and used-to-bes. Bodes well for the future of the Leafs.
