One of the problems with the catch rule is many don't understand all that's need for something to be a catch. And sometimes the refs don't either. And I don't mean it being ambiguous. I mean obvious stuff like establishing as a runner.
The biggest problem with the catch rule is they use it to change games. They take away obvious catches that effect the outcomes of games. Thankfully they didn't allow it to happen to the Eagles.
The Bills vs the Patriots Benjamin TD reversal stands out to me. There was arrange of time where the ball could have been deemed secured and part of that time was still before the foot left the ground. Instead of calling it inconclusive the refs said: hmm odds are it's off the ground before the ball was caught. That's not how it works and never was the spirit of why review was implemented in the first place.
well then if that matters - take away the gronk catch at the sidelines with under a minute left. he caught it and as he was heading out of bounds got hit and landed oob and the ball comes flying out of his arms. no catch then.
You have to have catch and control throughout the said play. If not, no catch. Some of the calls that were made in the SB wouldn't have counted week 15. BUT, they did and that's the bottom line. Catch rule needs to be simplified to the point where an instant replay can do what it was intended for... if not, there's trouble and confusion. Just my opinion on an interesting subject that's getting a lot of attention... good stuff to read - good thread.
If it's what I remember it is like Ertz. Gronk established himself as a runner in time and then stepped OOB and the ball came loose. Clement never would have completed the catch process IMO until after he fell down since the timing was different.
The eagles went for it all on manageable distance during 4th down plays. 4th and 6 at the 22 if I had to guess would actually have been their lone FG try. I found this online while trying to find that picture I was talking about and it made me lol. Uhm Elliott hit multiple kicks that game.
I think we all agree it will be very interesting to see what the new catch rule is for the 2018 season and what constitutes a damn catch now !
I was thinking about that when New England took the lead 33-32. If that was the final score, I wondered if Elliot would become the new Norword. That led me thinking about Buffalo 66. A great movie by Vincent Gallo, where this dude gets out of prison, visits his parents and then sets out to kill Scott Norwood for missing a FG in the Super Bowl.
missing the game winning FG in the Super Bowl as time expired. When I think of Scott Norwood, I think of Ray Finkle from the movie - Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. "LACES OUT!"
It was incredibly refreshing to see another team get the benefit of the cursed "Catch Rule". Its especially rare when its actually against New England.
he actually got off the bus and walked over to the guard rails to people I was near in south philly at broad and packer and chugged champagne and beers. he continued to do that all the way up broad street. then he and celek got out and sung the "no one likes us, we don't care," song and broad and bigler streets. so he was a little bombed. look at the girl in the red coat...count 3 heads in front of her and you can see Kelce's costume and his arm raised. that was 11:15am. parade was awesome. people driving down at 4-5 am were nuts. I drove down at 7:30 to south philly and traffic was fine. parking was tough by I got a spot and walked down to broad street. tons more cops and barricades in south philly than the 08 Phils parade. saw a sign on tv and had to laugh "CROSBY IS STILL A BITCH." why bring that to the Eagles parade, I don't know, but it was funny.
Because Philly fans STILL can't spell "Roethlisberger". I'm glad you had a good time, Cat. Congrats again.
Starting to hate this Eagles team, why are they talking about cheating and slurring the Patriots about not having fun ? They won. Sheeeeeesh. Lane Johnson is the one that got busted for PEDs..annoying we are still talking about filming walkthroughs when the league themselves said the Patriots couldn’t have even had the power to use cameras to film it https://thetomaselie.com/
That’s really the only bad reversal that happened that helped the Pats this season. Seferian-Jenkins and Jesse James were the right calls.
And the Brandon Cooks "catch" in week 3? I'd disagree with the James call, only because it was ruled a catch on the field. There was not enough visual evidence to warrant a reversal. And yes, if it was ruled incomplete I'd still say not enough evidence to overturn. As for the Seferian-Jenkins play, I don't remember much about that one. That was called a TD on the field and on replay ruled a fumble out of the EZ? If its the play I'm remembering, I remember that being very close but he fumbled just before the ball crossed the plane. I believe that was was called correctly but I'll have to double check the video on that to be sure.
