Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

Needless to say I've already fallen in love with Bell and Wheaton. Neither are "burners," and you can say what you want about Chip Kelly changing the face of the NFL with speed (chuckle), but both players have intriguing abilities that fit the football field.

Wheaton is forever open. He uses his hands more often than his body and his change of direction is sharp. I won't presume an understanding of route running (because who the hell can know which route was called from their living room?), but he seems to plant his feet and own a cut better than most at the college level. He seems like the time that'd find the opening in a zone a la Hines.

Bell is less worn than I think many of us thought (something like 450 carries). He runs upright (looks like A.P., actually) and has a combination of power, quick change of direction, and leaping ability that makes up for what he lacks in top-end speed. Also, the man can ground a defender when utilizing the stiff arm. (I'd mention his spin move, but some folks would have a heart attack in here... Mendy).

Do I think the Steelers leaned towards need a bit more than BPA? Sure... but their selections went a bit against the grain as to what the "experts" thought were BPA, so perhaps Colbert and Co.'s list really had these fellas ranked as their selections would indicate.

19, 53, 100, 78, maybe 86 in the 4th.. man, I'd be hella happy with either of the 1st four and would be satisfied with the latter (doubt Sanders lasts longer than this upcoming season).

Also, I just wanna say that I think 144 would be all that Foote has ever been and perhaps more. I'd like to take a stab at this guy in the 6 if we have the opportunity.

With Thomas removed from my version of the war board, there are 109 players remaining out of 200. Through three rounds, 97 players have been drafted. I see 6 players that were not on the board as having been selected :

Travis Frederick (round 1, 31), Tyrann Matthieu (round 3, 69), TJ McDonald (round 3, 71), Hugh Thornton (round 3, 86), Kayvon Webster (round 3, 90), Duron Harmon (round 3, 91)

So that checks out and implies that the board entering day 3 of the draft looks like :

Not exactly a bold prediction, but accurate nonetheless. GM probably gone with him. Clowns in a circus.

    Agreed - another smurf...

I like the kid from Fresno.. #50 if he is still there in the 4th

  6. burghball Guest

I also like #116 in the 4th... this kid is a "football Player" NY's kid...

    enjoy,

  7. burghball Guest

ok - who is this CB that the Pat's drafted?

    Duron Harmon?

Is his a BillyB reach or what?

    enjoy,

yeah his "expertise" of drafting DB's is not exactly up there with Chuck Noll and Bill Nunn. /) I swear he LOCKS ONTO RUTGERS, just an observation.

I think 19, they are looking at his slow start and his learning curve. But he is disruptive, high motor, and heck how many guys in this class will be able to play NT, even as a backup, 4,5 maybe 6? I think Colbert's plan is to bring Twinkie Master back after the draft, and once they figure out the cap.

  9. nybites M.V.P. Steelers UCONN

I Can explain these omissions, they were on purpose. Colbert was not drafting a Center anytime soon, and I thought Frederick was the 3rd best OC in the draft, and highly over-rated. When Mayock gave him a third round grade, he was being kind to the Cowboys fans. Jones and Schwenke are going to be better players, JMFO. The HoneyPot was just never on their radar, the kid is an asswipe of biblical proportions. Plus they got Will Gay to play the nickel, not a need for a smurf headache with an attitude. Webster had a 7th-UDFA grade, just didn't make the cut, nothing I read said the Steelers were interested. And then Harmon, Hoodie is reaching, like the Safety he drafted out of Ohio last year. I have not problem with the player he took it's where he took him, way too freaking early. Late round Safeties, there are a few I like better, that is the bottom line.

What positions do you think they address today? I think S and ILB. After that who knows. Do they double up at any of the positions they already picked? It would be hard to pass on some of these guys.

  11. nybites M.V.P. Steelers UCONN

Another omission, which I got right, was Tharold Simon, I knew the kid was a douchearoo, so I scratched him off for character concerns. Heck he never even made it through the first round without getting arrested. LSU has got a big problem and the surface is only being scratched. Don't get me wrong, I think Kevin Minter does not fit into that group, and neither do the 2 RB's I have listed. They slipped through the cracks because Les Miles split the carries, and what you have are a couple of backs, without a lot of tread, who could be good. It was a numbers game, and the best RB they had was a FReshman. Jeremy Hill. Heck they still have Alfred Blue...

I am putting my money on 100 if he's there, although I like 116 and Ironman likes the kid out of Nevada. I doubt if 50 makes it to the Steelers, but it would be THE STEAL OF THE DRAFT. (not really I just like being a sarcastic bastage)

19 and 172 would make me a happy caveman.

  14. They need to address the OL w depth....Pitt always has injuries throughout the yr in that segment so get some quality backups....Schwenke can kill 2 birds w 1 stone(C/OG)

  15. Fellows,
I appreciate your input, could you give me your overall grade for each draft pick? Im reading the boards and am confused by just the numbers (you must have created a ranking that I did not see). I like the picks. I was telling my dad that we really need to draft our next superstar aka Troy P or James and I think we did so with Jarvis Jones. He honestly may have been the best overall defensive player in the draft. This kid is perfect for our defense and I think will shine. I also love the pick of LaVon Bell. The fact that the Steelers selected him over Lacy should show all of us how confident they are in him. We have not had the greatest luck drafting RBs but I wont questioned this pick. The signing of Lerod from AZ completes our back field and turns a weakness into maybe a strength. I dont know much about the wideout we drafted but I watched some tape on him and he looks to have great hands. That is always my biggest concern with wideouts. Anyways, I would love to hear what you guys think. Also, I hope we draft Sly aka Rocky aka Rambo with our next pick. With these new additions, we may be able to beat the Ravens again with a third string QB :).

I voiced my concerns over Bell in another thread. I think we made two out of three fantastic picks in Jones and Wheaton. I have hope for Bell, but I can't shake the feeling that we probably drafted another coach favorite (prospects who have busted in recent years) instead of BPA.

Walter has us picking #50 in the 4th. That would be firetrucking sweet. I don't like that he's trying to push John Simon on us in the 5th when players like 54 and 140 are still on the board. One OLB is enough.

    Just to make doubly sure:

Golly, I sure do hope the Steelers pick John Simon, OLB, Ohio State today! That would rock the bad monkey's house!
