I give our draft a solid B grade. In comparison, I gave last years an A+ at the end of that draft.

I'm a little surprised the Steelers didn't draft a TE with L Green's history with concussions

I think that's a very fair grade. Last year's draft was always going to be impossible to live up to. Also niggles that the Ravens, Bengals & Browns had very, very good drafts

TJ Watt - happier by the day with the pick. Hopefully can become a legendary Steeler LB.
Juju - great value at back-end of round 2. May be a bit of a luxury pick given depth at WR but could easily be 2nd or 3rd on depth chart by midseason. Most mocks had him much higher
Sutton - the top-end CB prospects were gone by end of round 2 but good value at #94
Connor - the feelgood pick of the draft - but probably still there at backend of 4
Dobbs - OK time to take a chance on a QB when draft board had thinned out. Fingers crossed
Allen - good time to roll the dice on a raw prospect with pyhscial attibutes
    Holba - WTF...could've saved the clever/hip long-snapper pick to round 7
Adams - no idea...but fine for round 7

  7. Mr. Pragmatic Starter Ravens

The Steelers' best pick, according to Todd McShay:

Joshua Dobbs, QB, Tennessee (pick No. 135)

Dobbs has a chance to be a good starter in this league, and landing with a team like Pittsburgh will only increase his chances. Dobbs has a live arm and the ability to throw with anticipation, and his excellent mobility comes in handy when he needs to extend plays. I'm really impressed with Dobbs' makeup -- he juggled aerospace engineering classes and being a starting quarterback in the SEC. Imagine what he'll be able to do now as he focuses solely on football. Dobbs is the perfect quarterback for the Steelers to draft and learn from Ben Roethlisberger -- and the team got tremendous value getting him at pick No. 135 (we had him ranked 63rd overall).

Prag: Following the Vols, I can tell you that there were a couple of instances where his studies impacted football. Rumor had it that before an SEC game, he was up until 3 am working on an Engineering project with his team, and he felt it had an impact on his play the following day. So there you have it, keep him away from the books and you'll have a top-notch QB. It's not often you hear that regarding football players.

They only brought one in as a UDFA so I'm guessing Green must be all clear. Odd though didnt Ben request a tightend?

Good point, I guess they must feel Ben has a rapport going with Grimble, and James and who was that other guy Johnson maybe?

Ben said that was fake news. :)

Smith-Schuster befuddled me at first, but we don't have another receiver like him on the roster right now. He draws comparisons to Brandon Marshall and Anquan Boldin, which is high praise for a receiver drafted outside the first round. He's also the first receiver the Steelers have picked in either of the first two rounds since Limas Sweed - but let's not think about that one.

Smith-Schuster is big, strong, and sure-handed. He could easily find a home in this offense as an alternative underneath option for Ben against corners who would be able to slow Antonio Brown down by mauling him in his routes. I think if Smith-Schuster was asked to be a #1 receiver, he would fail, because I question his ability to separate. This is an ideal situation in every respect for him, on a team that knows how to use its receivers.

This team needed a WR more than it needed a TE. Jesse James has been coming along nicely and the team hasn't given up on Lardarius Greene. Meanwhile, Brown, the NFL's best wide receiver under 6 feet this century, was the only dependable WR we had in 2016. I'm not sure if the people saying we didn't need a receiver are just suffering from short-term memory loss or what, but that was the reality. Did I think Smith-Schuster was the answer? I mean, no. I understand the pick after the fact, but I was looking at someone more like Martavis Bryant, such as Chris Godwin or Josh Malone, as a direct replacement to Bryant should he screw up again. Smith-Schuster provides quality depth of a different variety, however, and to be honest, between Bryant, Coates, and Heyward-Bey, we have more than enough of that kind of receiver.

Our WRs next season should be Schuster, Brown, Bryant, Coates, with Bey, Hamilton, Hunter , Ayers and Rogers. That is 5 players fighting for 1 position maybe 2.

I think Coates and Hunter become expendable with Bryant's return and Schuster being drafted. My opinion is Hamilton, Ayers and Rogers fight for the final spots. Could and often am wrong with this, but I would go with the youth personally.

I'm usually satisfied or at worst ok with the picks after the conclusion of our beloved Super Steelers draft but I think this year's picks were way below the line.
    Draft Grade: D minus

The long snapper alone makes this draft an A+

Well, I was away for the weekend helping my daughter move from her university residence into a house, so while I saw the first two nights of the draft, I was not available for Day 3 and wasn't following along in the thread here. While I'm not sure how everyone felt about the draft, I can certainly guess.

TJ is a in a love/hate relationship with this board. Some fans will love the pick, others will hate it. Personally, I love it.

Smith-Schuster was the shocker for me over the first two days. While I expected a receiver to be drafted in the 3rd round, I didn't expect one in the second. I thought for sure they were going CB there, and if Awuzie hadn't been picked two spots ahead of them , I think they might have. I'm sure many in here are disturbed by this pick, but the more I thought about and the more I researched the kid, the more I like the pick. He's a tough, hard working, fighter of a receiver with great hands.

Cam Sutton in the 3rd was a good pick. If not for an injury, he might have gone earlier. He's more of a slot CB, which is a surprise since I thought they would be looking for an outside guy, but he's got good man skills and plays the run well. I'm sure there was disappointment about this one too.

James Connor with the comp pick was great! I was happy. I think he'll develop into a quality backup and goal line/short yardage back. I can't think too many were disappointed with this pick. Maybe some thought they could have waited until the fourth and still got him, but I'm good with it.

Day 3 is where it got "interesting". Haha.

Dobbs in the fourth was okay. Personally, I would have waited until next year to draft a QB, but Dobbs is a high character, intelligent, athlete with a strong arm. He could develop into a good player. I would have preferred another position, but if they were going QB on Day 3, he's the one I would have targeted.

I REALLY liked Brian Allen in the 5th! No idea how the board felt about the pick, but he has starting potential in the league. Well worth the 5th round flyer on this size/speed/talent prospect.

Then came the 6th round. A round where they once selected Antonio Brown. And they take a Long Snapper! Hahahaha. This board must have EXPLODED! *ROFL*
While I can't justify the picking of a long snapper in the 6th round, the reality is Greg Warren is on his last legs. If Holba has a 12-15 year career with the team, I guess its fine.

Keion Adams is another player that I think has some real potential to shock some people. A year or two on the Practice Squad and he might find his way on the roster. He has some serious bend and a great amount of potential as a pass rusher. I can't imagine too many were disappointed with this pick.

All in all, like always, I have no idea how good this draft was. I wanted an Edge player, a CB, a WR and a RB in the first 3 rounds and that's what we got, so I can't be too disappointed.

Looking forward to watching the kids develop and seeing how this all plays out in Latrobe!
