I'm not sure what's wrong with investing a 6th round pick (2018 BTW) in a 24yr old guy with Gilbert's physical tools. That's what a 6th round pick is. It's a leap of faith for a guy that has a slim chance of even making the team let alone becoming a meaningful player. There are no sure things in the 6th round.

NFLDRAFTSCOUT.com has the Steelers picking Sidney Jones, a 1 on 1 cover corner out of Washington and not a zone type corner. Thank God! There will also be a couple of high end rushers available if they feel the need to go that way and who they have for a 2nd round pick. It's early and things could change.
Hopefully, they have linebackers, safeties and DEs on their list.......Defense, defense, defense........

Since the emergence of Antonio Brown who came from the 6th I looked up quite a few that have made the team.
Chickillo (sp) McCullers, V.Williams, Kemoeatu ect..

I'd love to see the Steelers take a safety that excells in coverage and another DB early in the draft. Tom Brady and the Patriots have said he plans to play another 3-5 years. The Steelers have got to build a defense capable of slowing them down if they have any hopes of winning another Super Bowl.

Get another edge pass rusher. I don't care if it's through free agency or the draft. They need another pass rusher to team up with what they already have.

Kevin King out of Washington is a kid I really like. He's an athletic DB with size, athleticism, and offers versatility. Right now he's got a 2nd to 3rd round grade. I watched 3-4 Washington games and really liked what I saw from him. He's got a frame that will allow him to fill out.

Marcus Williams out of Utah is a Safety that I really like. He's a ball hawk capable of playing all over the secondary. He's currently graded as a 3rd to 4th round pick.

I highly doubt either of these guys is available past the early 3rd round.

OLB that I really like is Ryan Anderson out of Alabama. James Harrison took a few years to become James Harrison. I think Ryan Anderson can become the next James Harrison very fast.

Hassan Reddick is another OLB that I really like. I see him as more of a inside backer in the Steelers system. The kids athletic enough to do it all. Reminds me a Ryan Shazier type athlete.

I'd like to see Timmons back but he's not capable of dropping into coverage and being effective consistently. If the Steelers insist on playing zone going forward they have got to get a hybrid type player that can play the run like a LB and cover like a solid FS.

I'm with ya on Marcus Williams and as I mentioned previously Desmond King should be a Safety at the next level.

Bb mentioned Jordan Willis as an edge rusher or OLB. He has what it takes at least on paper. I'm anxious to see him run at the combine.

And more often than not they don't. Picks are used for one thing... young football prospects that the front office believe can one day help the team. Gilbert obviously won't be one of those guys just like Travis Feeney from last year. Or Jordan Zumwalt from two years ago. Or:

    Justin Brown
    Keith Williams
    Jonathan Dwyer
    Ra'shon Harris
    Mike Humpal
    Marvin Philip
    Bo Lacy
    Matt Kranchick
    Drew Caylor
    Lee Mays
    Rodney Bailey
    Roger Knight
    Chris Combs
    Jason Gavadza

Those are all in the Colbert era - 23 picks in the 6th round since he took over and 1 has a made a meaningful impact. Doesn't mean you piss them away. They obviously failed by trading it for Gilbert but they routinely fail at using their 6th round pick to obtain a player who helps the team. And they got a chance to use this pick two years early. Just didn't work out.

Sorry Lyman, that wasn't intended to be a jab at your beloved Browns! I remember there being mixed feelings about Gilbert at the time, but I was firmly in the "if he falls to the Steelers I hope they take him" crowd.

Is Josh McCown an upgrade over Landry Jones?

  11. beachbum M.V.P. Manager Steelers

Probably and the added benefit of getting some direct insight into a fierce division rival makes it a no brainer!

What insight would we need on the Browns?

  13. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

I saw McCown was released and know he's had some really good games but didn't know the extent.

With his experience he might be just what the Steelers need in a backup if he isn't expensive.
I say this but still would be happy if the Steelers took a QB in this year's draft.

I'm gonna take a flyer here and assume that beach's sarcasm font was supposed to be on!

As for McCown, he's been pretty fragile the last few years. I'd hate to see us on QB #3 within a few snaps of Ben taking is annual 4 week mid-season hiatus.

    ah okay :D

  17. I mean I kinda agree...its not like they have had trouble w the Browns where they need insight

We have a sarcasm expert roaming the halls. Figured I didn't need it.

The reason I asked about McCown is he's been released by the Browns but they have offered him a coaching spot if wants it.
I figured if the Steelers bring in a possible future QB, McCown would be on the sideline helping mentor while Ben is out there being Ben.
McCown might be a good enough back up for a year or 2 while the rookie gets educated. I'm not real familiar with McCown other than when he played for the bears.
I'm not Landry Jones fan so I'm hoping he moves on.
Perryman or Webb could be drafted both need time to fix some imperfections but have upsides.

Kiper has the Steelers picking Reddik in the 1st round......From NFL.com:

    OVERVIEW
Reddick's athleticism has blossomed over the past two seasons for the Owls. The former high school running back and safety showed flashes as a pass rusher in his redshirt freshman (14 tackles, four for loss, one sack) and sophomore (23 tackles, seven TFL, 1.5 sacks) seasons. Reddick and teammate Dion Dawkins got into trouble for an assault outside a Philadelphia nightclub in March 2015, but was not suspended. He was selected for honorable mention All-American Athletic Conference honors that year, starting 12 times, making 45 tackles, 12.5 for loss, and five sacks. The Camden, New Jersey native garnered first-team all-conference recognition for head coach Matt Rhule as a senior, finishing third in the nation with 22.5 tackles for loss and leading the Owls with 10.5 sacks.
    ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Explosive, quick-twitch athlete. Great flexibility with loose hips to turn, twist, and chase. Excellent reactive quickness and change-of-direction agility. Dynamic playmaker in space. Locks onto targets and instantly accelerates to the ball. Finished 2016 regular season with 21.5 tackles for loss. Fluid mover around field. Has chase range over extended territory. Eyes work past blockers and into backfield. Slips and slides around the edge and through small creases. Always working feet into improved positioning after contact. Came in as a defensive back and has experience on all three levels. Has athleticism in space and necessary instincts to be legit cover talent as linebacker. Rushes with good bend and forward lean. Difficult to handle on tackle/end twists back inside. Turns corner with tight track to quarterback once he pries the edge open.
WEAKNESSES Undersized by NFL standards for position he's currently playing. Labors to disengage once size is on top of him. Will need more play strength to ward off NFL blockers. Improving with hands, but needs to continue technique work to control blockers. Lacks necessary bulk, length, and play strength to set a strong edge as an NFL 3-4 outside linebacker. Marginal speed-to-power ability. Connects and sticks to tackles when trying to bull-rush under their pads. Pass rush reliant upon athletic talent and cursory hand play. Needs more diversified rush plans. Slides off of too many tackles. Missed 16 tackles over final two seasons at Temple. Needs to chest-up and run feet through contact. Played in fewer than 70 percent of team's defensive snaps.
    NFL COMPARISON Ryan Shazier
BOTTOM LINE Injuries limited Reddick to just four games over last two years of high school, forcing him to walk on at Temple. The Owls staff helped him unlock his explosive athletic traits on the field, which resulted in three forced fumbles, 9.5 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss in 2016. Reddick's speed and athleticism might give him a greater shot at impacting the game as a 3-4 inside linebacker or a 4-3 WILL rather than trying to bulk up and play the edge. An ascending prospect with a high-end potential if he can continue to hone his craft.
