Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

Discussion in 'Pittsburgh Steelers' started by Steelroc74, Mar 24, 2013.

  1. In my mind we need to get an edge rusher, and interior pass rusher and a corner. If we want to be super bowl champions we have to get through Brady So we need to draft players with the skill set to do that.

Rang on CBS has the Steelers taking Taaskabar McKinley, an outside linebacker at UCLA. He's supposed to be a freakish linebacker due to size for disrupting the backfield.......Sacks, rushes, hurries, good hand-eye co-ordination for knocking down. Supposedly not a good tackler which leaves me a little leary with this pick. I'm thinking the Steelers are going to be looking for good tacklers plus their skill set in the 1st round. Rang has Harris (DE) going behind the Steelers to Atlanta. Who sounds like an Aaron Smith type while McKinley is moving up the board. PAC- 10 teams focused on McKinley last season also. Kiper of course has the Steelers picking somebody else.........Top corner or safety that can also blitz would be a good pick, imo......

EDIT: This is an early mock draft pick so things could change drastically by May.......

In my opinion, it would be easier to just go over what this team won't touch in the draft/offseason.

Fullback - Roosevelt Nix is great
Wide Receiver - Loaded roster; Markus Wheaton is the only receiver we'll lose to free agency. The top three for 2017 are Brown, Bryant, and Rogers, with what seems like a whole host of receivers with experience behind them
Offensive Tackle - Again, loaded roster; Ryan Harris is still under contract and I'm sure the team would like to continue developing Jerald Hawkins
Kicker/Punter - The specialists are likely safe

Other than that, it's pretty much open season (but not really).

The only thing I don't agree with is counting Bryant as a WR for this team. Unless he is reinstated before the draft I think they will still bring in a mid to late round outside receiver.

Well Breed, looks like I was pretty close on my assessment of Collins' contract value. If he had hit free agency he would have gotten plenty more than $50 million. Do you really think it's worth $14-15 million per year for that position? You keep misrepresenting the argument here, it isn't whether Collins is a good player - its whether he is worth that much money to play that position.

Tuitt, AB, Bell all coming up for extensions. That is a lot of salary cap money already, I just don't see them spending an equal amount on an outside player.

But heck yeah, they need to draft OLB and they should bring in another mid round QB if one is available - but I don't think there will be one any better than Landry Jones in this draft.

    Do your math 12.5mil

Part of the argument was whether he was good because Belicheat traded him.
    See jeans comments.

This championship game showed what happens when you can't rush the passer.
    Especially in a 3-4 scheme.
All 3 players are very important but do you really want to go into another season without help at one of the most important positions .
The CB were exposed because of lack of pressure. Think about it

  8. LoveTheSteelers Franchise Player Steelers

If he had hit free agency, it would have been higher than that.

Maybe but we don't know that

Nobody "hammered" you for your opinion. You were offered an alternative opinion and then it was debated. I thought it was a respectful conversation all around. I know when multiple people are arguing against you it can feel like you are being ganged up on, but when you are the lone person making your case, that's the nature of the debate. *DONT_KNOW*

And another part of it was that his stats suggest he's not a great pass rusher, which is something you keep hammering as being important. 4 sacks per year is not worth $12.5M/year, let alone whatever he might have gotten on the open market, in my opinion.

And every single person in here agrees with you on this! We need another pass rusher, whether its an early draft pick or a free agent addition.

Personally, I just didn't want to spend that kind of money on a guy who hasn't produced and the Superbowl caliber Patriots thought so highly of they traded him away in the middle of a successful season.

Here's an article about his exit from NE...note the stuff about being poor against the run:

    http://nesn.com/2016/11/jamie-colli...with-patriots-coaches-before-trade-to-browns/

So, the Pats were going to make him a part time player because he was bad against the run, and the stats show he rarely gets to the passer...where is the value?

Remember, the Pats received a compensatory 3rd round pick from the Browns...or EXACTLY what they would have gotten if they just let him play out his contract and leave in free agency. The only difference is the pick will be in 2017 instead of 2018. So the Pats traded a player you think of as a game changing pass rusher in the middle of a playoff run for, basically, nothing.

I know you want what is best for this team breed...I just think that the rest of us are trying to get you to see that Jamie Collins was too big a risk for too little production to spend that kind of money on.

    From Mike Mayock:

MOBILE, Ala. -- Senior Bowl week is always my favorite week of the year. I love watching the nation's top seniors compete in live practices. Tuesday was the start of three straight practice days, and there were plenty of players who made quick impressions. Here are five that stood out to me on Day 1:

    Cooper Kupp, WR, Eastern Washington
I like this kid. He had 22 catches, including six touchdowns, against two Pac-12 teams in his college career at EWU. He can play at any level; don't let the small school fool you. What I saw on tape is what I saw Tuesday. He's fast. He won deep, he won shallow, he beat press coverage. He can win at all three levels. And he gets it. I think he's going to play and play well very early in his NFL career.

    Forrest Lamp, LT, Western Kentucky
The best single tape in the last five years that I've seen against Alabama's defensive front was Lamp's. When they measured him here in the morning, his arm length was just over 30 inches. That's short, and a reason why there's so much talk about moving him inside to guard, perhaps even center. He reminds me of Zack Martin or Joel Bitonio -- guys who were dominating left tackles in college but got kicked inside in the NFL, and still remained really good players. He had a very solid day.

    Dan Feeney, OL, Indiana
Feeney and Lamp will both be in the conversation of who's going to be the No. 1 interior offensive linemen in this draft. I'm going to have fun watching them compete all week. They certainly competed in their first practice here. Going into the season, many had Feeney as the No. 1 interior offensive lineman, but when he got back from an early season concussion, he was moved to tackle and played out of position, so there's mixed opinions on him among scouts. But he had a solid start to this week, especially when he shot his hands inside.

    Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova
He's really fascinating to me. There was a buzz around him in the scouting community before this week and I think it will pick up even more steam coming out. He was impressive in the morning weigh-in with a ready-made NFL body. And he competed at a high level when he hit the field. When you come from a small school like Villanova you have something to prove, and he did on Day 1, with his effort and toughness. He's raw but had a lot of upside.

    Montravius Adams, DT, Auburn
When he keeps his pad level down he can be a monster inside. You don't see many people with that size with those type of movement skills. He's got superior short-area quickness and comes off the ball both in the run and the pass game. In the one-on-one drills nobody could block him on Day 1. He was dominant.

12.5 sacks fir a player that plays both ILB and OLB is better than anyone the Steelers currently have.
You're counting 4 years but the 4th was split between 2 systems.
Collins is a 3 down player.
If he had a falling out with his coach IDK.
you say his stats aren't good but he's had triple diget tackles 3 of the 4 years he's played. If ypu think that's not good you must hate the Steelers whole LB group.

couple of notes from the East West Shrine game (my comments)

Lot of buzz re DE Trey Hendrickson, Florida Atlantic - Looked great all week - high motor - but will his ability disappear at the next level?

Fabian Moreau CB UCLA - this is an athelete looked really good all week and in the east west shrine game.. was impressed

DeAngelo Brown NT Louisville - Had a nice East West shrine game - anchors and is powerful - held up well during double teams... But do we need a NT - probably not

JAvancy Jones - LB Jackson State - Small school kid - need to do more research - but liked what I saw

De'Veon Smith RB Michigan - He aint no L.Bell - not even close - was not impressed

Michael Roberts TE Toledo - showed nice hands bigger TE - but Slow - a Matt SPaeth? He's at the senior bowl also - need to see more

Alek Torgensen QB Upenn - You guys know I like these Ivy Kids... Need to see more - Hopefully he gets an invite to the combine

    enjoy,

I haven't had a chance to start watching senior bowl practice but I'll be watching
    OJ Howard TE Alabama
All pass rushers, DB and QB'S.
    Maybe Center/Guards.
Pouncey backed out of the Probowl for injury concerns and off the top of my head I think he said he would retire with Ben so..

Watched some of the Senior Bowl practices yesterday - its Frustrating - NFL Network is more interested in getting all their Celeb shots vs showing action... One Example - spending too much camera time on showing Horse tooth (aka John Elway) standing around.. Yeah we know he's there - show some of the action....

anyway - couple of kids to watch the rest of the week and on Saturday:

Damontae Kazee CB San Diego State - did a nice job many most of the WR.. has a tendency to get beat deep

Tanoh Kpassagnon DE Villanova - 6'7" 280 - room to grow - I think this kid has a real high ceiling.. not ready for prime time.. but watch out...

O.J.Howard TE - Here is maybe the best player at the senior bowl - available at Pick 30? Kid is smooth - great hands - premier TE

Ryan Switzer WR UNC - kid gets open and has nice hands.. great routes

    enjoy,

Breed - Howard looks really good - what we need to watch is his blocking - willingness and ability

    Agreed !
One of the reasons I like watching these practices is you get to see one on one.
I've watched him play but this will help define what I see

He played primarily as an OLB and 12.5 sacks would be what I expect out of a $12.5M/year guy in a single season, not his 4 year career!

I was actually only counting 3 seasons...12.5/3=4 sacks per year (approx)

    Not according to Bill Belichick.

The falling out was that Belichick didn't want him on the field full time because he was poor in run support, lost contain too often. Collins wasn't willing to be a part time player so they traded him to minimize any potential distraction.
How many times do I have to say this? TACKLES DON'T MEAN JACK TO ME!!!

His coaches in NE thought he was poor against the run, that tells me far more than his tackle stats do.
