Kevin Green turned out pretty good for the Steelers, as did Farrior

I wouldn't touch Collins. Hoodie dumped him for a reason and salary cap isn't it.

    Well what was it then?

Green wasn't drafted. Neither was Farrior and he didn't play OLB. Arguably the only OLBs that developed and played well as starters under Cowher were Porter and Haggans.

    That's the point.
I know green was a free agent
I know Farrior was a FA and an ILB

The statement was made that bringing in a fa might not fit in the locker room, which is a valid argument but it's worked before

From what I read there is a few theory's.
The most consistent was his contract.
NE offered 11mill Collins asked for Von miller type but it was never negotiated.
They traded him because they didn't think they could sign him and wanted to get something put of it and did it before he could be a distraction likely headed into the playoffs at 7-1

Off the top of my head, Cowher also drafted Jason Gildon and Chad Brown who moved outside and was great.
He had 2 very good starters Green & Loyed in place so priority was else where

And yet if he could be a key part to their defense he would be going nowhere. They made the deal when they did because he was starting to loose playing time because he cant stop the run. They had to trade him while he still had some value.

Lets say it was purely a money issue and he did indeed ask for Von Miller money. Is he all of a sudden going to sign for less because he played with the Browns? Not likely he will be too expensive for the Steelers which is a good thing because he sucks against the run.

If he cant stop the run, how did he get well over 300 tackles in the last 4 years?
    Well over 100 assist ?
    12.5 sacks?
No LB on the Steelers roster has those numbers over the last 3 years.

Again, because we've had this conversation already, tackles don't mean anything unless you provide context. Where were those tackles made? If he's chasing a RB down the field and tackling him after a big gain because he lost contain, is that a good thing?

  11. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

    358 tackles plus 121 assist?
Give me break, were not talking about Timmons early years.

You are misreading the stats, or have bad stats.

His tackles according to Pro Football Reference are 254 solo, 141 assists for his career. If you take just the last 3 years, its 221 solo and 118 assists, for a total of 339.

However, again, unless there is some context none of it means he's a good run defender. A scouting service or somebody like PFF might be able to give you some efficiency stats that show how good he is in run support, but I won't take raw tackle numbers as any kind of support for a player's value. Its silly. The game is more complicated than that.

Personally, I've never watched enough of the Pats to know whether or not Collins is a good run defender. So, I'm not really supporting Jean's position here other than to point out that using raw tackle numbers is not a good way to judge a player.

Concidering he lead the Patriots in tackles period speaks volumes.
If you think an OLB is in coverage the majority of the time you have been misguided.
Now, I'll relook at the numbers I provided but even your numbers puts him at a top tier LB.

It's 228 solo 131 assist with 12.5 sacks for 87.5 yrds lost by the opponent.
    Add in 5int.
He played in 58 games and started 49 og them.
    My original numbers were wrong.

  17. manosteel9423 Franchise Player Steelers

If he played OLB, and wasn't in coverage the majority of the time, why did he only average 4 sacks per year?

Do you want to pay big money to another OLB that can't get to the QB?

  18. manosteel9423 Franchise Player Steelers

Well, then they wouldn't be raw anymore!! *ROSE*

  19. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

    Ok you win
Jarvis Jones or Chickrill is the answer if Harrison retires.
The Steelers will draft a 3rd tier OLB for the future even though they've had one maybe 2 with Dupree that's developed over the last 10 years.
One of the biggest rolls on the defense a defense that was BAD until Harrison and Dupree started.
It's OLB have been critical to the defenses success since the 90's.

I think I read where 3 of the top 4 tacklers for New England are in the secondary this year. That's strange, but maybe it's because they've been shuffling LBs all season
