They traded for Jerome, so his contract was already in place. No big money needed.

He makes me nervous. The rumours were that Belichick let him go because he freelanced too much. That wouldn't work in Pittsburgh.

Perry and Ingram are more in line with what the Steelers might look at. Perry would likely bring pretty big money with the year he's having.

I'm not sold on John Simon...he really hasn't done much. I wouldn't sign him thinking immediate starter, that's for sure.

Because Collins is versatile I think he fits perfect with what the Steelers do.
    Is he like Shazier? IDK.

John Simon has 10 sacks, 120 tackles over the last 2 years. That's not bad but should be cheap. IDK

I gotta say, I don't know if there is any FA available who will be better than Jarvis Jones. Chandler Jones maybe? He's quite a pass rusher but you need someone who drops into coverage and Jarvis does that pretty well. Chandler Jones played DE for New England (I think) and only moved to LB in Arizona.

If all they had to do is find a pass rusher it would be easy to identify 3 or 4 players who would fit. But who runs a defense like Pittsburgh's? It's hard to judge guys who are playing largely different systems.

Jamie Collins came in the league the same year as Jarvis Jones.
Collins has 12.5 sacks 359 takes and 131 asst. He was traded to Cleveland this year. Some say he was a freelancer, some say it was a salary cap move IDK.

So he is far better player than Jones.
He also can play ILB just as good as OLB.
This is the type player the Steelers need in the system they play especially when they a 2 DL scheme. They need players that can move around.

Olivier Vernon entered free agency last year averaging 7 sacks a year at Miami with a season high of 11.5 in 2013. He never made a pro bowl, was never voted all-pro and he received a 5yr, 85M contract with 40M guaranteed from the Giants.

Even if the Steelers decided to venture outside their normal business model and compete for a high end pass rusher there's no way they are going to compete with teams willing to pay that kind of money for a pass rusher.

So you want a corner? Same story. Janoris Jenkins never made a pro bowl, never made All-Pro, averaged 2.5 INTs per season over his 4 years at St. Louis and the Rams decided to franchise his backfield mate instead of him. Not to mention the guy has been a knucklehead his entire career. Janoris got 5yrs, 62.5M with 29M guaranteed.

The Steelers are simply not going to compete for high end free agents. They are going to draft, develop and try to retain their own.

How many OLB have been drated and developed over last 10 years by the Steelers?

Hey, I'm all for drafting and developing the next Harrison, Porter, Loyd ect...
    But....

No one said it was easy, especially considering our highest draft position since Tomlin has been coach was 15th. More often than not they're drafting in the 20s. Dupree is looking pretty good.

  9. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

Exactly! That's why I say pick up good FA.
Continue to draft and hope one pans out.
I like Dupree and think he will be one of the better OLB. He needs to get stronger even though he is built well.

Breed, I have a handful of bullet points in response:

    1. Collins is a really good player, but does he specifically fit what the Steelers need at ROLB? That is the position we are talking about, yes? We are talking about replacing James Harrison.
    2. You say the Steelers have not done a good job developing OLBs, so why do you think they would have success shaping Collins into a player they can use in their system? Huge risk.
    3. Collins would not have replaced James Harrison this season, so he would have been just as productive as Jarvis Jones.
    4. Is it worth it to you to risk $40-$50 million on a guy the Patriots didn't want to keep, a question mark at ROLB, and a player who has averaged 0.26 sacks per start? That is a huge amount of money per sack.
    5. Jarvis Jones has 35 starts, 6 sacks (.017 sacks per game) and will be available for less than half the money Collins will get in FA.
    6. If their sack averages continue, Collins would average 4.16 sacks per season, Jones 2.72. To me, that difference of 1.5 sacks per season is not worth an additional $6-8 million per year.
    7. When you look at the sack numbers, we know what responsibilities Jarvis Jones has had. A lot of edge contain, a lot of zone coverage. I don't know what Collins' job assignments were, so was he primarily a pass rusher? Or a ILB? Based on his tackle numbers it seems like he was mostly in the middle of the field. This comparison would take a lot more analysis.

    1. That's where he's played since coming in the league.
    2. He's already a Probowler and NE defense is very simular to Pitts.
    3. He's a FA in 2017 not 2016.

It's obvious you have no clue about Collins. Do some home then comback.
Also, there is a good reason why Jones doesn't get a helmet on game day when Chick is healthy and it's pretty bad when a 6th Rd pick plays over your first.

Not impressed with the Probowl thing. He had 5.5 sacks when he went to the Pro Bowl, but was on a high profile team and made a few big plays in primetime games. He didn't deserve it in my opinion.

I don't see where anyone is disputing that? Its 2017 right now, we know he wasn't a free agent last year, don't we?
I thought this was HILARIOUS considering the conversation we had on another thread about you wanting a 6th rounder to start over another 1st rounder! *ROFL*

    Did you read LTS post?

  14. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

Jarvis has been starting just wasn't any good. Thats why he doesn't get helmet anymore

Jones sucks. The need a high draft pick this year to put in his place and dump him! Brady was a 6th round pick also and kicked 1st rounder Bledsoe to the curb ........

  16. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

Moving a player to a better position for the team is completely different then taking him off the field.
    :/

  17. manosteel9423 Franchise Player Steelers

I did, and I agreed with most of what he said about Collins. I would have a hard time paying him big money. The production hasn't been there and the Patriots obviously had no intention of paying him big money this year after seeing him in practice and on the field for 3+ years. That's a red flag in my books. If the team that drafted and developed you is willing to dump you at this stage, there has to be a problem.

You're not still trying to convince me that Shazier would be a good Safety are you? *WALL* *WALL* *WALL* *WALL* *WALL*

  19. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

Mano, how many Patriot games have you watched?
Have you compared Jones stats to Collins?
    Can Jones move inside?

Not impressed with 5.5 sacks yet stick up Jones o_O

The reason that Chick got a helmet over Jones was due to special teams versatility; not OLB play. Jones did come up with a nice tackle in kick coverage on Sunday though. I'm just glad the Deebo is still playing....he's so strong against the run and he's such a smart player.

If I had to pick one trait for the future ROLB, I would value setting the edge and stopping the run over pure pass rushing ability, but that's just me.
