Tuitt was supposed to be a monster this year. Still early but it hasn't happened.

Maybe if Hargrave gets better it will take some pressure off.
Tuitt and Heyward are good players but they need help.

The other way to go of course if you grab a guy and he is ready in three years you let Ben go. I know sacrilegious but if you have a chance to grab a guy in the draft (as beach pointed out doesn't have to be a top 15 pick) you need to grab him and if in three years he is ready you consider moving Ben and handing the reins over.

For the sake of argument lets say Ben has 6 more years ahead of him (not a lot of qbs playing past 40). You hit on a QB in this next draft which mean 3 years form now Ben has 3 years left and you actually hit on the guy then you are looking 12 to 15 years easy for him (barring injury of course) so the best move for the franchise would be to turn the ball over to the younger guy.

Yeah a lot here will be in the let him retire and find the next guy but look how well that often works. The Steelers drifted a long time between Bradshaw and Ben. Yes we had some good teams defensively between the two but no one is holding up the qbs between the two and going I want him to lead my team. The Dolphins are still looking for the Marino replacement the, 49ers are still looking after young, the broncos went a long time after Elway needing that next guy and while old man peyton filled in for a bit but if not for that D broncos are not hosting a trophy. You cannot skip on the shot at the next guy if he is right there.

Jean makes a great point and looking at our past QB's before Ben it really make the case I started.

It's also time to go ahead and rebuild the STEEL CURTAIN.
I've been a big supporter of the 3-4 but this hybrid the Steelers are playing now won't win a superbowl.
They will never beat Tom Brady until they can knock him around a bit.
This team is bad at pass rushing nowadays.

My only problem with that thought process, Jean, is how will anybody ever know if they've "hit on the guy"?

Ben misses a couple of games seemingly every year, so maybe you get a couple of glimpses, but is that really enough to let Ben go, in your scenario, in 3 years if he's still playing at a high level? What if all these young defenders start coming together and we are SB contenders every year between now and then?

Still wanna let Ben go and turn it over to the young guy they've developed?

I get that its a scary thought to go back to the 80s and 90s for QB play, but that's a possibility no matter when you try to draft Ben's replacement. Finding a franchise QB is not something you just do. Its not that simple.

I have no problem with drafting another QB in the middle rounds and hoping he develops. Maybe you hit on it and its undeniable. More likely, you get another Landry Jones.

When Ben is done, you start drafting QBs high and hope for the best. At the end of the day, that's all you can do in my opinion.

I think the team is very much trying to rebuild the defense. That is evident from the past few drafts. They have been focusing on the defense almost exclusively. It takes time, though, for those players to develop and have an impact. I like the talent on the DL with Heyward, Tuitt and Hargrave. I like Shazier and have hope for Dupree. They still need another OLB and another ILB to replace Timmons eventually. I like the secondary far more than most. I think Cockrell and Burns are a good pair for the future and Davis and Mitchell at Safety is an exciting pair as well.

There's room to improve, but experience and health will go a long way towards that in my opinion.

lol. For some reason I thought you guys were talking game stuff on here. I predict general pain for Steelers Nation in all aspects. Especially today though.

    .

How did the packers know Rodgers was ready? They hadn't seen him in games? The Colts ran with Luck without having seen him in a game at all. I'm guessing you have a guy in practice for 3 years you are going to see if he is ready or not. If your scenario of the defense comes to pass then that back up is going to be playing against a good D in practice and you are going to know if he can handle it or not.

And that is why you cannot afford to pass on taking a guy if you think he is a franchise QB just because we still have Ben. The Steelers could have drafted Dan Marino but didn't and the franchise suffered. I didn't say it would be easy. I simply said they should be looking.

Well, I guess we can concidere Golson a bust. He will not participate in the 2016 season. He's never even been in a regular season game.

  13. demolisher43 Franchise Player Steelers

Not surprising. I hated the pick ever since it was made. A+ on that one, Colbert.

  14. gidion72 Legend Steelers

He's never played in a preseason game, I don't even know if he participated in a full contact scrimmage?

  15. igloofn68 Guest

Yeah, but he's always around the ball!.......If he's at home or on the sidelines! *REF*

Yeah that's what they say every training camp

We can think about Teez Tabor now that we would pick 11th overall if the draft were tomorrow. The sad thing is we would still be picking third in the division, with the Browns picking 1st overall and the Bungles 7th.

It's quite clear with Heyward's recent injury that defensive line depth is a major issue, but most of us knew that already. The top brass put too much emphasis on picking defensive backs early and reaching for Artie Burns when the front seven still needed bolstering. Breed's boy Kenny Clark is a cog in the machine that has helped the Packers maintain a highly-ranked rush defense all season, and he's just one guy. Kevin Dodd is doing okay in Tennessee and Emmanuel Ogbah isn't bad in Cleveland.

This won't be the year to try and find Ben's replacement. For better or for worse, he's our guy for at least one more year. At 11th overall, I'd love to see Leonard Fournette (because Bell is a free agent), Malik McDowell, Tabor, or Jamal Adams. Were we to pick later, I'm a huge fan of Derek Barnett. He's not a finesse guy at all - more of a bull rusher - and will be a force setting the edge and rushing with power. He'd immediately be more like James Harrison than anyone else on the roster right now.

Not a fan of Dalvin Cook as a feature back in the AFC North. He wouldn't be able to run at all against the Ravens - reminds me a lot of Melvin Gordon, who only got going this season after a bad rookie year in San Diego. No thanks to any WR or ILB who would be available around that area, of which there will be quite a few. Tomlin puzzlingly decided to roll with six ILBs and we'll be stacked at WR in 2017 with or without the draft.

Markus Wheaton is a definite loss to free agency (sorry gidion), which may net us a late comp pick, no more than a 6th. The big comp pick will come if we let Bell hit the open market. I expect a 4th, but there's an outside shot some team will overpay and we'll be rewarded with a 3rd. OTWT.

No apologies needed, Wheaton hasn't been what his college footage showed. Bell better be on this team next season.

While building int he draft is great the Steelers D need help now rather than later. The window with Ben is not going to stay open as long as some Steelers fans are hoping. To that regard which free agents could they target in the off season to help the D now?

  20. demolisher43 Franchise Player Steelers

I just cobbled together a short list:

    Calais Campbell
Jabaal Sheard (Probably not; he's never had more than 8 sacks in a season so far)
    Dontari Poe
Lawrence Guy (4.5 sacks in 2015)
    Johnathan Hankins (PLEASE)
    Ziggy Hood (why not?)
    Bennie Logan
Brandon Williams (Ravens should re-sign him though)

Melvin Ingram (probably too rich for us)
    Jamie Collins (see above)

    Trumaine Johnson
    Prince Amukamara
    Captain Munnerlyn
    Stephon Gilmore
    Morris Claiborne
    Dre Kirkpatrick
    A.J. Bouye

    Eric Berry
    Barry Church
    J.J. Wilcox
    T.J. McDonald

I'm with you. Ideally, I'd want to see one free agent per unit. My picks would be Johnathan Hankins, Jamie Collins, and maybe Trumaine Johnson. If we're too cash-strapped to re-sign Bell, though, that may just be a pipe dream.
