Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

  1. My dream scenario (if Hargeaves doesn't drop) is Jackson in R1, Joseph or Thompson in R2 and someone like Hargrave in R3 of South Carolina State (Steelers attended his pro day).

  2. I'm really not sold an any of the three at pick 25. If Apple was a better tackler hr would be the guy but he's pretty poor in that area and after watching missed tackle after missed tackle last year I'm not sure the steelers would take him that high.

  3. Not a bad list, my dream scenario would be billings in R1, artie burns in R2 and miles killebrew in the R3.

I really like Chris Jones and if we don't address the d line in the first round id be all over him in the second. I know he was busted a few weeks back but the guy offers what we need and I don't think it was anything too serious if my memory serves correct.

Correa would be intriguing, but he's a project. Quick and athletic, but reports say he is not a refined player and lacks football strength. Hopefully he is only a second round consideration for the Steelers.

Thanks but no Thanks they already have one head case on the team no need to add a second.

  7. He's had a full season under his belt where he has been clean from any off the field issues and improved his image, Bryant hasn't. I guess it's upto the coaches to weigh up the pros and cons and decide if he's worth the risk.

Probably interested so they don't have to change the name on those # 51 jerseys (including those for sale).

Or he had a full season where he didn't get caught. Or a full season saying I have to behave until drafted. He didn't do as well as expected at combine or pro day and he had multiple interviews with teams that were considered very shaky. Why some Steelers fans are enamored with him is beyond me. I would rather watch him succeed elsewhere than taking a chance on him failing here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but If I remember correctly the Steelers don't seem to be in the habit of bringing in their 1st round picks. I understand that players they have drafted lately in the first round "dropped" to them. I don't keep these stats and if someone has them I'd be very interested in seeing how often the Steelers end up drafting someone brought in for a visit in the first round.

I am speaking specifically of the first round. We all know they bring in players and end up drafting some of them every year.

We may have to look at who they don't bring in who is expected to be a 1st round pick to see who they may actually draft. Of course that would all be moot, if they have a history of bringing in their 1st round picks.

I think this article will help answer some of those questions. Some that they didnt invite they met with individually. Like Dupree the attended his pro day and he went to dinner with Tomlin. As for invites sometimes they may not invite players who they don't think will be there or players they have already seen enough of.

    Thank you Jean.

Well it appears 50/50 with their first round picks. Guess it won't help to get a better clue as to who may and may not be their 1st round pick.

  13. If he took drugs while he was at eastern Kentucky he would have been found out during testing so it's safe to say he was clean, however you may have a point regarding a change in lifestyle for the draft so he don't lose himself millions of dollars. The beauty of this is we don't have all the information as we are not privy to it but the steelers do and they have spoke to him, so I'll trust there judgement.

While I agree there is an element of risk attached to spence he is a top 10, maybe top 15 talent and if he slides to 25 does the reward outweigh the risk? Urban myer went out his way to help this kid after Being kicked out the SEC because he believes in him and braxton Miller had positive things to say about him too.

Some steelers fans are enamoured with him probably because he's the best pure pass rusher in this draft. This is a QB league and the best way of stopping that is by getting pressure and sacks. I may be wrong but I read somewhere that combined the steelers olb's registered 15 sacks, this is a number that must improve if we want to get to number 7 and spence is a guy who could really help us in pass rush situations in a draft that doesn't have many good ones.

In reference to his poor combine and pro day showing I'm guessing your reffering only to his slower than expected 40 times of 4.80 and 4.75? As we all know the combine is basically a track meet and we should trust what we see on tape. In Spences case he shows a quick get off and an explosive first step. It's also worth mentioning he had a slight injury at his pro day and still ran his 40 even tho advised against it in poor weather.

Time will tell but I'd take him over any cb or safety that is gonna be available at pick 25. I just feel the reward outweighs the risk for me.

If he were just asked to rush the QB I would agree but what happens when he has to drop into coverage which could be quite often ?

4.75 isn't slow for an OLB in my opinion. I don't think his long speed is an issue. His history could be, certainly, but if the Steelers feel he is a different guy and worth the risk at 25, I'm okay with it.

I think it around what Jarvis Jones ran

I don't disagree with your opinion often Mano, but I do here. Especially in today's football with the more athletic, younger and faster QBs speed is essential with OLBs. Jarvis Jones doesn't seem to have the speed to put consistent pressure on the QB. I haven't done much homework on this subject, but it appears to me when speaking of "edge rushers" speed is the need.

Obviously holding the edge is important and if that is what you are looking for then I agree 100%, but I don't want another Jarvis Jones.

  18. I agree with Mano here, 4.75 is a touch slower than you would like but by no means is it slow. When you watch the tape he seems to have that initial quick first step and explosion that you want to see from an edge rusher and the short area quickness is evident. Spence suffered a hamstring tweak at the senior bowl and wasn't at 100% during the combine or pro day and my guess is he could probably get down to the late 4.6-4.7 range when fully healthy.

I agree with you on Jarvis Jones, he gets in position but just lacks the speed and burst to consistently finish the play to get more sacks, but to me Jones looks much slower than spence on tape, a lot of Jones sacks were hustle sacks but spence actually beats the tackles and gets regular pressure. Off the top of my head I believe Jones ran a 4.9 at his pro day and Colbert and Tomlin didn't have a problem with it.

40 time means virtually nothing for the OLB position. I would pay more attention to the short shuttle because that deals with quickness and change of direction.
