What about taking a shot at the guy from ND that injured his knee maybe in the 2nd round, how bad are they saying his knee is? is it Willis McGahee or Marcus Latimore bad? I believe this guy was considered top 5 before the injury, now I'm hearing he might slide out of the 1st entirely.

Jaylon Smith . I personally don't think he gets out of the first round. He seems to be coming around pretty well. A team will be willing to gamble on him knowing he could miss his entire rookie year.

Do you think top 10 gamble? or do you think he will be there when the Steelers pick?

I'm thinking late first, unless he will undoubtedly be able to play this year. he's a tremendous talent that comes as a tremendous risk.

I read there are some teams that have red-flagged him as undraftable. As soon as they introduced the possibility of nerve damage that's all I needed to hear. Way too much risk until the later rounds.

There's usually a medical re-check for combine guys. Maybe that will clear some things up.

I was just reading in Steelers insider that the Steelers will be switch to a 4- 2- 5 base defense and the 3-4 will be a sub package.
Seams Mano was right about the need for a Big NT.
The 3-4 has been so good for the Steelers idk why they would switch and could be a big part of why the defense hasn't been very good.
Some of us knew Tomlin would do this at some point. Time to impeach him. Lol!!!

    Joe Green anyone?

  8. I don't think the Steelers will "lose" their base defense. However, when watching last year, they didn't really HAVE a base defense. Their front seven was a hybrid of 3-4/4-3 with a lot of subpackages. Two years ago, Tomlin said they played about 60% of their snaps in subpackage formations because they were constantly facing 3 and 4 WR's sets, and that doesn't look to change anytime soon.

Are they still concerned about nerve damage? I haven't heard anything lately. I watched him through college. He was a playmaker as a freshman.

I think the need to identify a base defense anymore is pointless. They are so rarely in it.

I think the Steelers are focused on being scheme flexible from one week to the next. I can't freaking wait to see what they do with Shazier this year. Did anyone else notice when the Broncos consistently had Trevathan on White in the AFC championship? The Patriots kept going to him and Trevathan won every time.

You're probably right and this is what Mano was pointing out when it comes to taking a big NT in the first round.

I think to further muddy the waters, the Steelers could well take a nose tackle in the first round, but that would only be if he is a 3-down player who can rush the passer. The days of the run-stuffing 2-down NT have pretty much ended in the NFL.

Daniel McCullers can pass rush from the nose but he needs a lot of refinement. His best move is the "I'm twice your size and will walk you backwards into the QB".

No but my statement wound up in the middle of yours.

Well, that's exactly it. The Steelers were only in the base 3-4 less than 30% of the time last year, I believe, so its truly not their base defense. Like beach said, the defense seems to want to be flexible. Able to change week to week depending on the opponent. If you are playing a strong running team, you want to be able to send out that big Nose and stuff the run, but the majority of teams today are throwing the ball around. You need what used to be sub-packages on the field alot more to offset the passing game.

All that said, I have no problem with the team taking a DL early because if they are playing with 4 DL, like they do in the Nickel, then they need to be able to get home with those 4 players rushing the passer. Its just that DL they take early needs to be more than the run stuffing NT that we are used to. He needs to be able to get pressure and stop the run.

I'm thinking a tweener like Emmanuel Ogbah could be the pick. He can play inside and outside on the D-line.

If by some chance Andrew Billings is available when the Steelers pick he'd be the perfect fit! I doubt he's going to be there but I can dream!

Reading that the Browns are looking at RG3 and attempted to trade for Kap makes me think they aren't sold on any QBs in the draft in the first round.

The Texans aren't going to sign a QB after giving Osweiler big money.

It's always nice when a couple QBs go early allowing for some good talent at positions of need to trickle down to the Steelers! Don't see that happening this draft.

Billings has a good chance of dropping to the Steelers. If your going to use 4 on the DL, you don't need that 1 big run stuffer with an extra player up front.......

In my opinion Billings is capable of being a run stuffer in the 3-4 or an interior pass rusher in the 4-3. Good interior pass rushers are rare. I see Billings as the most dynamic of the big defensive lineman in this draft.
