Cortez will get a shot but he's almost sure to be cut during the training camp/preseason time frame. Rooney admitted they have made mistakes in evaluation of players in the secondary recently. Cortez will be a 4.4 million cap savings if he's cut after June 1. He'd have to show up and blow them away to make the team next season.

Rooney mentioned free agency and the draft in addition to the players they drafted last year being answers. He knew exactly where the Steelers pass defense ranked last season. The Steelers may not take a DB with their first pick but I am 100% confident they will upgrade the secondary this off season. None of us want to see them reach for a DB at 25 if a player they have rated highly at another position is available at 25.

I must have missed where bb is.
    Anyone know ?

He and NY are very missed, especially at this time of year.

Im looking forward to the Senior Bowl today and always read both of there remarks.

If you 2 and quit a few others are reading this please don't let this thread and site die. We have all put a lot of time into it.

Although the DL needs help to get rid of Cam Thomas, I think a rotation player can be gotten in the another round, unless theres a good left DE that falls. But I think Thomas can be beat out this camp. I put this in before but must of forgot to hit the submit button. Eli Apple (Ohio State) is a pick for the Steelers by many draftniks. He's a DB and the sky is the limit according too many. Not to mention I think he's only 20 yrs. old, which means he'll be around for a long time if he pans out. He eventually could be the one on one cover guy for years to come even though he probably won't start right away.
As far as the WR that somebody brought up from OSU, the Steelers pick ahead of the other 2 teams (K.C. & Pats) that are supposedly interested in him also. I'd look for some DL help in the 3rd round if everything goes according to plan......The Steelers definitely need more pressure on the opposing QB which in turn helps out the DBs and possibly more turnovers....My personal opinion is take a chance on Apple and they won't have to worry about drafting that position for many years to come.....

Arkansas Brandon Allen reminds me of a taller Russell Wilson.
Strong arm, throws well on run, pretty accurate. He could be a steal in the 4th if he makes it till then, which imo he will.

I wouldn't worry about Cam Thomas. He's not under contract and by the end of the year they were rotating McLendon in at DE over Cam. Only way I could see him back is if he agreed to a vet minimum contract in which case he would be promised nothing and have to earn his roster spot. Eli Apple is very intriguing.

I don't know much about Eli Apple. I have seen mocks from him being picked around #10 to not being picked in the first round at all. Is he being drafted on potential?

Yep...lots of talent coulda be year 2 starter

Most of the mocks I've seen have him falling to the Steelers or out of the 1st round. But it's early. I saw one mock that had a team picking him if the Steelers didn't. Might of been the Packers? Forget......
Things could change after the Combine.....I liked Marcus Peters last year but he never dropped to the Steelers.....

Wexell has me excited about Jarran Reed out of Alabama. Can collapse the pocket and hold up against double teams. A rotation of Reed, Tuitt and Heyward would benefit them all and could allow the Steelers to stay in base more often. Dontari Poe played 760 snaps in KC as a NT / DT / DE. I could see a scenario where they could all three play 750 snaps. That would keep them all fresh and dominant.

Agreed, I thought he was dominant all year and it carried over into the senior bowl.

A'Shawn Robinson, Alabama DT - Would be a true NT in the 3-4 but could play any position in the 3-4

Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss DT- First round talent with some character questions. Might fall to the Steelers.

Andrew Billings Baylor DT- He was a monster playing inside for Baylor. First round talent.

Jarran Reed, Alabama DT- Considered a true two gap run stuffing first round talent. He's a perfect fit for the 3-4 defense.

I listed four defensive tackles that should be gone when the Steelers pick. If any of them are there I'd be excited.

There is going to be a bunch of offensive and defensive line talent available in the second round this year.

There's quite a few really good defensive players in this draft.
I don't think they mess it up but you never know with Tomlin.
Our luck he'll draft another ILB or RB in the first round. :/

  15. StlCrtn Franchise Player Steelers

I don't see how he's screwed up drafting an ILB in the first.

  16. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

If he drafted another inside linebacker in the first round yes that would be screwing up

unless he could convert to another position I would have to agree

What if the guy was better than Timmons and Shazier?

  19. demolisher43 Franchise Player Steelers

That would have to be Myles Jack. Even then I'm not so sure.

  20. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

What would you do with Timmons if you drafted another ILB ?
    Spend a 1st to get a 3rd Rd pic ?

I know he has a bloated contract but a solid starter and is relatively still young.
Besides, the back ups ( spence n Williams ) could start for other teams right now.
