Here's another example why we label the NFL an educated guess.. a roll of the dice.. You just don't know...

Raiders: Cut ties with RB Trent Richardson on monday... Kid looked like an absolute stud coming out of Alabama... A sure Pro-bowler - 1st round hit... Has been nothing but a bust. I missed big time on this one.... I dont like picking RB's early - but saw only greatness from this kid.. oh how wrong I was....

    enjoy,

No sweat bb, the guys that get paid to do this gave up first round picks to get him. Not one team, but two teams. Like you said, it's a roll of the dice.

  9. I know that a lot of fans are miffed that the Steelers have essentially gotten rid of two 2016 picks for players, but I heard a VERY interesting statistic today on Mike and Mike that put things into perspective. Bare down, draftniks...this may ruffle some feathers.

Greeny pointed out that, amidst all the hoopla the draft gets every year and all the time and energy teams spend trying to harvest the next crop of players, draft picks as a whole are a tad overrated.
He then pointed out that, with RGIII now playing second fiddle in Washington (you know, after they traded a multitude of draft picks to the Rams), 5 of the top 7 picks in the 2012 draft are either out of the NFL or not starter quality. Beyond that, WITH the picks the Rams gained from that trade, they have still maintained mediocre status.

Even further, over the course of the last 10 years, the percentage of Pro Bowlers that were picked in the 1st round of a draft is only 34%. 1st round picks that have made multiple Pro Bowls is right around 17%. I know that Pro Bowls isn't always the best indicator of a player's success on the field, but it is indicative of the most skilled players (for the most part) at a particular position.

The sample size was only 1st rounders, as those are supposed to be the most NFL-ready players that SHOULD be a starter at their relative position within a year of two of being drafted.

Now, this is not saying that teams should focus on FA entirely either, because, as we all know, FA often means overpaying and that hurts the ability to pay your own players.

The Steelers have a good model of finding a few gems in FA, but relying on the draft to build their team. Sure, having 11 picks is awesome, but if only 5 make the team it doesn't matter near as much. I know, I know, you want more players so you have more chances at striking gold, but most players don't end up like AB. Most 6th round picks are either cut or out of the NFL within 2 years.

Wow, that is an extremely LONG way of saying "It's a roll of the dice"!

For the two picks they traded, I look at it this way: if Brandon Boykin is a good slot corner he is worth a 5th round pick. If he can start at CB and be effective he is worth a 4th round pick. With Scobee, if he makes 85% of his FG attempts he is worth a 6th round pick. Both are true even on a 1-year rental. However, if Boykin is really effective I think the Steelers will pay him what he wants to stay in Pittsburgh - it's not like he'll be getting a $8 million/yr. contract or anything.

If we win the SB and he has like 6-8 ints he might just get around 10-12 million.

Booker is a guy I'm really watching closely this season too. He's about a 3rd-rounder right now.

Here's a tidbit from Bob Labriola on Steelers.com:

Read Tim's predictions on the main board and you will know the Steelers will contend this season.

Is this the season that we draft a quarterback that has a real chance at developing into a starter or do you think we will wait till Ben is 35 (2years from now, 3 years before his contract is up)?

I feel like at some point we should try to do the Aaron Rodgers type of approach and spend at least a second round pick on a quarterback to groom for 3 years of more if one is available. Or at the very least start looking in that direction.

I think 2 years from now. Unless there is a cant miss qb sitting there, which is unlikely. Probably another defensive heavy draft. This team needs defensive line depth, probably another OLB, and definitely DBs. On the offensive side, i could see line depth, another rb, and maybe another backup qb...if I'm not mistaken there is a pretty big number of free agents this season so there may be more spots available for draft picks to contribute...

IF wheaton wants big money they will let him walk and need to roll in another WR to develop. I dont worry about that though because that is one thing they have excelled at lately.

They'd still have Brown, Bryant, and Coates as the top 3. Not a bad start...
