There are advantages to being 5'9" just like there are advantages to being 6'2". How many 6'2" guys can follow a receiver into the slot and play man? It's pretty rare. That's a job for the shorter, shiftier guys. It's why William Gay is such a great fit for the Steelers. He can play inside or out.

If Golson doesn't make it in the NFL it won't be because he's 5'9".

Dismukes and Finney. One of those could be solid for you guys. I am surprised neither got drafted.

NFL QBs also make poor throws. I would be very happy with Golson getting a number of gift picks. The difference being with someone like Ike Taylor (and I like Ike) those would usually be batted down passes and next play for the offense (or punt).

Carnell Lake played both Safety and Cornerback for the Steelers. I will trust his judgement that the Steelers got it right.

  5. Kiper gave the Steelers his highest draft grade (A-) SO I'M SUPREMELY CONFIDENT *HELP*

    Mano:

I think we are in agreement. However, i do think having a significant height advantage makes it easier to not make a poor decision when one throws- i..e you throw it high, im with you that the qb might just over shoot but you do inherently have a greater window of leeway if the guy covering cant really get up- again, not saying golson's vert sucks or something just that physical attributes do matter BUT- technique is more important.

    Beach-

Again, with you. just pointing out how the issue with his height is not without merit, but if he does line up against the slot or on inside covverage, do you think that would make it more dangerous at times if a team was to shift out their TE or bigger guy- lets use Bmore: Perhaps Maxx or Brown on golson, i feel like thats a huge mismatch regardless of Golson's prowess in shadowing his man- the sideline can grant you a great asset which he wont be able to use, then again- i think its fair to acknowledge that almost any DB is not going to enjoy going up against a guy that is 6'6 and 6'5.

I don't think you're going to see Golson covering TEs but either way this conversation seems to suggest Senquez will be anomaly and that's just not the case. There are 5'9"-5'10" guys all over the league.

According to Pro football reference Revis is 6' and Haden is 5'11"
NFL.com list Revis as 5'11" and Haden as 5'11"

When you look at all time greats Woodson, Sanders, Lane, Lebeau, Blount, Willie Brown, Mike Haynes, Lott, Lem Barney, Lester Hayes all were 6' or taller as are Bailey, Peterson, Charles Woodson, Sherman

Guess there is hope Darrell Green was only 5'9" but like it or not there does seem to be a correlation to height and playing CB at an elite level.

This is true overall. But do you draft a 2nd round corner, one the team was allegedly looking to trade up for, to play the slot when your outside CBs were already having issues the previous season?

I get the sunshine and lollipop angle but I also get the doom and gloom one. Considering winning the AFCN will be the first priority of every team in the division, these are the heights Golson will have to cover when looking at the opposint top 3 CBs

    Bengals - 6'4, 6'2, 6'2 (Green, Sanu, Jones)
Browns - 6'2, 6'2, 5'10 or 5'7 (Bowe, Hartline, Benjamin or Hawkins idk)
    Ravens - 5'9, 6'2, 6'5 or 6'2 (Smith, Perriman, Brown or Aiken/Butler)

The Browns #3 receiver is his best matchup along with Smith Sr. At the same time, do you want your rookie 2nd rounder covering #3s or Smitty?

I'm not saying the kid will be bad, but I can understand the dark outlook. Add in that he's under 180 so the odds of him out physically receivers is low also. Bad passes will be his best friend and that may be asking for a lot..........of course he'll get some in the AFC North.

Brandon Flowers is an All-Pro corner at 5'9".

It's worth mentioning that he played a lot of zone at Ole Miss and played it very well. A lot of his picks came while in zone, so he has the ballhawking mentality of a centerfielder, just the ability to turn and run with receivers on occasion.

Strictly speaking of height, it shouldn't matter much at all. 5'10" Troy Polamalu made a spectacular INT in the 2009 season opener versus the Titans against 6'4" Kenny Britt, for instance.

Do you think he has Polamalu level talent? From what I read, the kid only gave up 4 TDs but 3 of them were to big receivers (admittedly I don't know who those 3 were though). And that's on a college level. We all agree that the pros are simply better.

No matter how gifted he is, we can all agree he has more of a disadvantage than a 5'11 or even 5'10 CB. I think that's the main point of the doom and gloomers. Drafting the 5'8 and 3 quarter guy in the 2nd, especially with Rollins still on the board

I didn't mean he's looking to be a slot defender. I'm saying in a man-to-man scenario there is advantage to having DBs who can play anywhere. And by the same notion if you have versatile men on the field and want to disguise zone or man it's easier to do when everyone can play everywhere.

What do teams do when they want to identify man or zone? The put guys in motion. Teams that don't have CBs that can play in the slot will tip their hand. Teams with guys that can play in or out can follow receivers around the formation and still drop into zone if they choose.

It's not the end all / be all but there is an advantage. Plus, if he ever reaches the level of a guy like Ike (big if) he has the advantage of truly being able to follow a team's #1 because he has the slot ability.

So is Brent Grimes (5'9.2" per the combine). So he's about 5/8ths of an inch taller than Senquez.

Yeah and that same group ripped the Steelers for taking Leveon Bell over Arthur Brown.

I would be interested to see the number of second round 5'9 and less CB's that went on to start, im not advocating that he should reach pro bowl level but at least a solid starter is to be expected from a first and second rounder- ideally speaking.

And again, he isnt 5'10, there is a difference here, whether it seems relatively minute or not, i mean hell, the difference beween 4.3 and 4.4 is noticable, especially when they do those slomo replays with multiple prospects- at the higest level, these differences simply matter.

Hindsight worked out just fine, so did what transpired on the field, the ravens had decent linebackers and then by the time I would expect brown to step up and start in his second year, we had one vet in the middle with a legit bonafide rookie next to him and brown got dropped down- i dont know if its fair to say he got a proper shot- plus none of that has any bearing on making an educated guess pre-nfl. By that i mean, if you look at tape and you end up picking X over Y, IT DOES NOT MEAN that Y wasnt the right choice at the time, its like guessing based upon faith, or lesser evidence but turning out to be right- again who knows, we were not privry to all the things that the steelers were so perhaps our judgement was misguided at the end of the day we dont have access to coaches and a plethora of other tools. Point being, just because they got mad doesnt mean they were unjustified at the time, i doubt they think bell is bad now, but at the time they may have been valid in their thinking.

Yeah sorry but you'll never convince me 1" matters. The guy got his hands on 26 passes last year and last time I checked the SEC has tall receivers.
