Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

  1. I guess you hope Golson is one of the handful of impact 5'8-5'9 corners like a Brandon Flowers. This defense definitely needs playmakers. Not in love with short corners though (some of that is the Seahawks effect).

Don't hate the Coates pick. DHB is their 4th WR right now and he's strictly a special teamer. They didn't address the depth in FA (they don't really address anything ever in FA), so they needed a guy there. Unfortunately, they picked the dude with the second worst hands in the draft behind Perriman.

Lots of talk that the Ravens sniped Maxx and he was Pitt's guy. Kind of pisses me off if that's the truth. Prospects don't fall to you every time. If he's your guy even if you have to move up a few spots for a 5th round corner prospect who wont make the team you do it. Maybe he wasn't though. I still would have taken Gregory or Strong there as BPA (the latter would have given Pitt another reliable red zone WR which the team actually needs).

Not in love with the second and third round picks, but I've seen this team do far worse. Definitely get the disappointment when the franchise deviates from the board here that people spend so much time developing.

Umm so they took another shrimp and a WR that can't catch.
    Ok :/

Ugh... the little guy as CB I was ok with. He's got heart and is a real ball hawk for his size. Good tackler. But then you pick up a #6 WR in the third round? It doesn't matter if he turns into a great player.. what need was there for him with what we have already? Just doesn't make sense. Hope tomorrow turns out better and they go all in on more god damn defense... you know the biggest issue with the team making it to another SB before Ben is finished.

...and scoring more TDs. More points helps, too.

Definitely not a fan of the Coates pick but 364 days ago I wasn't a fan of the Martavis Bryant pick so what the hell do I know?

I have no problem with Golson in the 2nd. I've never been all that concerned with size. Seen too many really good football players who don't line up with the size / weight charts. Golson had 10 INTs last year in the SEC. There isn't a team in the NFL that needs a ballhawk more than the Steelers.

Coming into the draft we needed OLB and CB help. I think we've done well. Just wish we took Henry Anderson instead of Coates.

Not a big fan of either 2nd or 3rd round draft picks but what do i know. The only thing I can say is the Steelers have hit more than they have missed on WRS of late.

According to LaCanfora the Steelers were targeting Golson the whole time. Not interested in Maxx. Doesn't surprise me. Maxx is overrated. Ozzie's recent history of moving up is not good:

    Arthur Brown 2013
    Bernard Pierce 2012
    Jah Reid 2011
    Michael Oher 2009

That is not really that fair Beach, both Oher and Pierce contributed, and im almost positive you agree with me: if you can get guys to start or help in the NFL then you did well, especially in later rounds.

the other two, i wont argue, although you kinda could. Maxx is being universally praised, he is not by any measure, a bad player based upon an educated guess that the NFL draft and scouting world is. We got Maxx in the mid second, when he could have feasibly gone as high as a fringe first and carl davis was similar also. I feel like the ravens have done very well so far.

I also dont think the steelers are anywhere close to as bad as being projected- I, much like yourlsef, think a play maker is rare, unless the guy cant physically jump then i dont care too much, physical attribute matter but you need the technique too. As for Coats, insanely high ceiling, but is a huge risk- looking at your team, why not? you have a great stable WR corp and on top of that you just churn them out so you might for sure end up with another steal.

on a final note- if you have time watch the ravens presser, its great, im very excited for the 4th round. Thus far im elated with the ravens draft.

When you move up to grab a guy especially in the first I think you need more than just contributes.

Re the Coates pick.... While his hands are questionable... Coach Mann likes the kids speed, and toughness. He can play some slot and most important to me, is a very willing blocker in the run game... Coach Mann thinks he can coach the kid up. Mann did a great job with Bryant last year and if he can do the same with Coates we just might, that's might, have special player here.

It's just not as gloomy as we think.

    Let's see what today brings

    Enjoy,

Also being reported that max Williams was not the target for the steelers in the second round

The only one I would argue, personally, is Oher. It's known by all that I thought he was overrated since his rookie season but he was a 5 year starter, started every game, and was part of the great o-line during the Superbowl winning year. Getting that out of any draft pick is a success. If he only started two years I'd agree, but five straight is a success........no matter how much I think he sucked.

This is the draft Ozzie expels some draft demons. The round 1 WR demon and the trade up demon

Okay, so, we got our OLB and CB...what's the problem? I'm pretty sure that everyone in this thread was adamant that the first two picks of the draft should be a CB and an OLB, right?

I get that Golson isn't the guy we were targeting. I am still disappointed that they didn't take Rollins there, but my philosophy on draft day has always been that they pay these guys alot of money to siphon through these players because they are much better at it than we are, so I'll trust that Golson was the right pick there...at least until he proves he wasn't.

Sammy Coates was an interesting pick to say the least. Certainly doesn't feel like a need with Brown, Bryant and Wheaton in the mix. But remember, Markus Wheaton only has two years left on is rookie deal and while he's been good, I wouldn't call him a game changer. Coates has game changing ability. If there is one position that I trust this staff to get right in the middle rounds of the draft, its receiver.

Overall, I like the draft so far. We got one of the top OLB prospects in the draft in the first round. We got a ball hawking CB in the second round and we got a homerun threat at receiver in the third so far. Not too shabby!

Your right.. its just so strange to see them pick a guy that will at best step on the field as the 4th WR at best. They've done so well with WR that they are the better judge that armchair GM's.

That said... hope today they double up at CB. Doran Grant. Ifo.

Rollins or PJ Williams (even with the baggage) would've been a better selection than Golson. I'm not really sure why we went after Sammie Coates either. Getting Bud Dupree at 22 was a gift, and has kept this event from being an EPIC failure for the Steelers. This draft is average at best.

I think a few people here are focused on the fact that not every pick has been at CB and OLB. Really, it felt like every draft pick that wasn't at either of those positions in mocks was questioned, and now that the Steelers had the audacity to draft a receiver, it's horrible.

I think Mano said the Steelers didn't "need" a receiver. Well, that simply isn't the case. Assuming the only "new starter" needs were at OLB and CB (I'd disagree with the latter - CB was always just a mid-tier need with this team. There were just a lot of knee-jerk reactions), we had four receivers signed to the active roster. Normally, a team carries at least five WRs, so having four very good/talented players plus DHB makes a lot of sense. Even if you don't like Coates, you have to realize that picking a receiver is well-justified and should be praised.

The need at CB is filled. Don't expect another pick at the position since another pick there would be a luxury.

However, I'd look for another OLB. TE and DL still should be addressed, even though a pair of TEs we could have picked today evaporated off the board after we picked Coates last night.

I've been reading many of the comments on SENQUEZ GOLSON (Cornerback Ole Miss Rebels 5-9, 176) and wanted to compare him to what the Steelers currently have plus Brice McCain - who signed with the Dolphins this past off-season..

McCain is 5-9 187, started 9 games for the Steelers, and tied for interception lead on Steelers with three. He had the GW interception against the Jaguars. Wished the Steelers could have kept him.

William Gay is 5-10 190, tied for the interception lead on Steelers with three, and each was a Pick-Six.

Antoine Blake is 5-9 198. He didn't appear to be too bad on the field when in there.

Cortez Allen is 6-1 196. He is the only 6'+ on the roster. If he can turn it around, I still like him long term.

B.W. Webb is 5-11 190. Don't remember too much about this guy.

Kevin Fogg is 5-10 185. He was picked up in the off-seaon from Miami.

It seems to me that if Golson is the ball hawk in the NFL that he was in college, the Steelers did well with this draft pick.

Our tallest member of the lollipop guild is Allen at 6-1, and he was benched last year. Then we have Gay at a towering 5-10, remember what Gronk did to him, now the Ravens have a 6-6/6-7 TE we have to play 2x a year, and to counter that move we select tiny smurph at a whopping 5-8 so you have 10 inches of height difference to start with, then you have the arm length difference, then factor in the vertical, which golson has the advantage but doesn't make up for the difference in the other factors.

Did someone take Jeremy langford? or is he sliding for some unknown reason?

None of those guys were second round draft picks. Golson was predicted to be a 3-4 round pick. I think that the Steelers taking him in the second was a bit of a reach.
