Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

  1. Something HUGE to note on character issues with NFL prospects: Mike Mayock essentially apologized for being wrong about Johnny Manziel...and then went further saying (paraphrasing) that 90% of the time, a guy is who he is. You can smile for the cameras and say all the right things in interviews, but eventually a lot of these guys resort back to bad habits. It may be two-three years down the road, but when these guys get paid and get comfortable, you see the red flags creep back in once again.

This is why guys like Peters and Gregory scare me like crazy. They may be fine this season, but two or three years down the road, they could become a locker room nightmare. As a GM, you do have to take some risks. There are so many players in this draft who grew up in a less-than-ideal household, using football as a means to escape life on the streets. That life is hard to escape, and you hope that prospects with a checkered past grow up and move on, but there are so many examples where that simply isn't the case.

For every Antonio Brown (yes, he had a really rough upbringing, but you will never hear about it from him), there are a 5 Jamarcus Russell's, Pacman Jones', etc. Mike Adams, who hasn't exactly played up to his 2nd round hype, had a ton of question marks because of his marijuana usage, but aside from him being attacked and stabbed, he has stayed out of the limelight negatively.

I like the board, ny. I would personally order many of them differently but I think your rankings are pretty good in terms of a consensus ranking.

The draft contest is too hard for me but I'll be watching to see what I can learn.

Just watched the Tomlin/Colbert presser on the draft, one thing stuck out I haven't heard before. The question was something like "how many picks to you generally put on your draft board, and how far do you go down the list during the draft?" The answer was they typically generate a list of about 200 players, and they usually finish the draft within the first 120 on their list.

That is amazing to me. Out of the list of talent during any given draft, to think they can get their picks from a list of 120 is surprising.

One other question from the press conference I didn't post earlier:

Reporter: "You pick at #22. Are there 22 players in this draft you would feel comfortable picking in the first round?"

    Colbert: "Yes"

I don't think Clayton was as bad as his career turned out. He went from Kyle Boller to Steve McNair (the noodle arm version) to Kyle Boller to rookie Joe Flacco.

When he went to the Rams in 2010 he was tearing it up and tore his petallar tendon. And that was all she wrote.

Some guys just never catch a break in this league. I think Clayton was one of those guys.

  6. I am not AS surprised by that. You do your due diligence on everyone, and then you start cutting people from your list. Truthfully, they can probably cross off entire positions in some cases (QB, ILB, K) and then cherry-pick the guys you really like for depth positions (OT, DL, RB, WR). The Steelers REALLY need 2 OLB's (1 future starter and 1 depth), 1-2 CB/Safety, 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 OL, 1 DL, 1 WR. Because they only have 8 picks, I expect a double dip at either LB or in the secondary. Keep in mind, there are still plenty of unemployed guys who can fill some holes.

Not so sure I agree with that.. maybe in the 1st - 2nd round.. but if you have a chance to upgrade a position - I think you do it.. Example - if you can upgrade your number 2 and even easier your #3 QB.. and they are the best value during a day 3 pick.. I have no issue... same for K. If a kid like Stephon Anthony is still on the board when we pick in the 3rd.. I would not have a problem with that either..

    enjoy,

Then why don't you sign 2 UDFA QBs to go and upgrade over Landry Jones, or at least have somebody else pick the UDFAs.

Any Steelers fans not in the mock want to pick UDFAs for the Steelers? Bites doesn't want to so I'll leave it to the rest of the war room.

Obviously he thought they said the Draft was 420 not 4/30 BTW that dime bag just cost you $8,000,000 son. Class this missed.

  15. You take him at #22? Odds of he or Gregory being there are a lot higher than originally.

  16. Watched a lot of Gregory over the past few days on draftbreakdown. Really like this kid's talent. Weighing in at 235 at the combine was an issue but he reportedly put on 8 pounds after. Think he could easily add another 5 or so to get near 250. Von Miller weighs 249. He's doing alright (obviously a different scheme however). Plus, Gregory really uses his weight well. To me, he plays heavier than what he's listed. Haven't watched any Fowler because he likely wont get out of the top 5 but out of Ray, Beasley, Dupree and Gregory I like Gregory the most. Don't really put any stock into his "candid" statements after his failed drug test because he's just being spoon-fed lines from his agent, but if the Steelers are comfortable with his background, I'd be ecstatic with him being the selection at 22. Looks like a potential blue-chipper.

Decent chance the Steelers will have the ability to either outright draft Rowe, Collins or (far less likely) Peters in round 2, or at least be able to maneuver up slightly to do so. That's my ideal scenario for Thursday and Friday: Gregory in round 1 and a corner like Rowe or Collins (assuming Peters isn't there) in round 2. If those corners are off the board in RD 2 Maxx Williams would be my preference.

    Amped for Thursday

NYB, Here is SteelersDepot final mock, You are right on with Steelers Depot on the first 2 picks, and 1 or 2 late round players also, but your dead on with your approach and selections you made, it might not be round for round exact but your thinking is the same.

The only thing I don't agree with is going O-line as early as the 3rd in their mock, I'm more inclined to agree with you on that selection and wait until 5th or 6th round.

    Great Job as always!

I doubt it affects his draft stock at all. If he falls they will blame it on the arrest, but he belongs at the bottom of the first round anyway.

How fitting, I am about to Eighty Six 86.

It has to affect his draft stock. He will now be "in the program" and that in itself is a deterrent because it takes a guy who could normally smoke his brains out during the season and places him under random tests year round. It's a significant development.
