So has anyone done any homework on Jaquiski Tartt.
    SD at Samford. 6-1 221 runs a 4.5 40.
Maybe a early midround pick for help on special teams and
    possibly a sleeper ?

Hilarious post. I laughed, I cried, I shit my pants. The comment at the end about the UK gov't supplying a car to those with penis envy to make them feel better was really funny.

I went with the results from pro football reference

And Mike Adams the WR that we drafted in 1997 came from texas

Many times and you have yet to write out all of your thoughts on the topic we started there in regards to drafting 3-4 defenders being easier in the 90s than it is now thanks to the multitude of teams that utilize 3-4 principles now vs then. You said you had alot to add to the conversation and have added nothing.

So, when you take the time to call me out in the draft thread without ever providing me with your thoughts on the topic, I took not as a joke, but as condescending.

No worries, my wife tells me I am already going to hell, so no need for you to send me there. I thought I had accepted your apology. I have no problem with a little joking around, but I am still waiting for your argument. And honestly, I don't think you would have much support in this thread if you are going to try to make the argument that drafting 3-4 defenders is just as easy now as it was during the majority of Cowher's term as coach. Most of the stalwart draftniks in this thread have waxed poetic about how nice it was in the 90s to be able to draft those talented "tweeners" for OLB and DE in the middle and later rounds because they didn't fit the 4-3 scheme that most teams were using then.

How much has the Tomlin era tried to draft DE/OLB early in the draft ?
I always thought that OLB was one of the most important spots in a 3-4 defense
or at least it has looked that way to me for over 20 years.

What do you consider early? first 3 rounds? 1st round?

In the Tomlin Era, he has selected 3 OLB's in the 1st 3 rounds in the draft.

Woodley RD 2 - panned out until he got fat and lazy off his new contract and that lead to him getting hurt all the time.

Worilds RD 3 - Had a good half a season for us, then retired because he wanted to concentrate on his faith........cough* cough* BS!!!

JJ - RD 1 - still a work in progress nothing to show for it yet.

    Nothing to write home about!!

Yep 3 OLB in 7 years. 2 of which were 2nd Rd picks.
This might be why there is still a need at one of the most
    Important spots on this defense.

We were talking about this over on the Scout site this week and when speaking about Shane Ray and Markus Golden here is what Dale Lolley had to say...

"15-20 years ago, they'd have gotten Ray in the third round and Golden in the fifth. Wait, they did that, but they were Joey Porter and Clark Haggans."

If you look at this as numbers, which it appears you are... There are 21 picks normally in the 7 years if you have a pick in each of the first 3 rounds. There are 25 "starting positions" on the team if you count the punter, kicker and long snapper as individual positions, if not, there are 22. Either way, there are 2 outside linebackers as starters which would mean from a pure numbers perspective 21 picks, would mean just under 2 picks at OLB would be used as an average. So, 3 would be considered emphasizing the position. Not sure if I've made this clear enough, but if you looked at all the positions the Steelers have drafted in those 7 years in the first 3 rounds, I'm sure OLB would be considered "emphasized". How many ILB and DL were taken in the first 2 rounds, in that same amount of time ?

It comes down too who's there at 22 when the Steelers pick. If the good LB's are taken then grab Marcus Peters. The Steelers need help at many positions, not just reaching for an OLer!

If the Steelers focused any more on OLBs and DEs than they have with Tomlin as head coach, the o-line might still be in shambles to this day and we'd be lamenting over how frequently the Steelers have struck out with edge rushers while worrying our heads off over when the next Justin Houston injury would happen.

But if you're including the first 3 rounds then you also have to include Buster Davis. He was a complete failure obviously but he was drafted in Rd 3 ('08). So that's 4 OLBs in the first 3 rounds and 3 OLBs in the first two rounds over 8 drafts (not 7). For comparison sake:

    Tomlin '07-'14 (8 seasons):

    2007 LaMarr Woodley Rd 2
    2008 Bruce Davis Rd 3
    2010 Jason Worilds Rd 2
    2013 Jarvis Jones Rd 1

    Cowher '99-'06 (8 seasons):

    1999 Joey Porter Rd 3
    2003 Alonzo Jackson Rd 2

    Cowher '92-'06 (15 seasons):

    1993 Chad Brown Rd 2
    1994 Jason Gildon Rd 3
    1996 Steve Conley Rd 3
    1997 Mike Vrabel Rd 3
    1999 Joey Porter Rd 3
    2003 Alonzo Jackson Rd 2

Or we could just say Tomlin has drafted as many OLBs in the top 2 rounds in his eight drafts as Cowher did his entire career. But that would make the original statement look really foolish so I won't do that.

  18. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

Look at that list of OLB during Cowhers tenure.
There was almost always someone near as good as the starter waiting.
Demo makes havea reasonable statement on the OL.
Pretty much would have agree with it.

  19. rarebreedsj Franchise Player Steelers

Oh yeah and there was at least one FA signing to go along with
The drafts., Kevin Green occupied that position for awhile so no need
To draft one early during that time period.
