Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

They draft a QB hoping he will be the cornerstone of the franchise. They draft RG III hoping he becomes what Russell Wilson has become. The NFL is becoming more and more of a passing league. Teams that compete year in and year out typically have a franchise QB. They fail just as much in their evaluation often times as they do in surrounding young QBs with solid talent.

The ones that surprise me are the teams like the Browns who draft Johnny Manziel over Bridgewater. Who in the world did the QB evaluations for the Browns? Bridgewater didn't show well at his pro day but all of his tape is pretty darn solid. Teams that get enamored by work out warriors or lose faith in the tape because of a workout make dumb decisions...like taking Manziel over Bridgewater.

Mariota is going to have to get comfortable under center but the fact he is one of the most disciplined and level headed guys to come out in years ought to count for something. You never saw him on the sideline yelling at coaches. He didn't throw a whole lot of ill advised passes that got picked off. I'm putting my money on Mariota having the better long term career based on his physical skills and mental make up.

Winston is a ticking time bomb. Bucs will look back and realize the off field trouble, careless interceptions, and sideline outburst when things didn't go his way are who Winston is...he's not the calm cool guy that is bypassing the draft festivities because he's matured.

Potential Top 50 Busts who you guys got, outside the QB position? This is a continued thought after watching path to the draft last night.

Kevin White, one year of production
Arik Armstead, messurables are crazy but on film you don't see the next Calais Campbell.
    Shaq Thompson- no defined position
Jordan Phillips- not a lot if tape 2 down plaer?
    Marcus Peters- character
Andrus Peat- upper body strength , not overly aggressive

    DGB- maturity
    Devin Funchess-Tweener
    Jalen Collins- experience/production

I argued with beach? Griffen's frame is maxed out IMHFO and I was sure he'd get pummeled. I said the same thing about Johnny Assmunch but got ltlle resistance history keeps repeating itself!! Herschel Wslker, Ricky Williams, Robert Griffen Jr Jr, . You cannot mortgage your future on
ONE player! Doing what tje zvikings did for Bridgewater & Patterson I'm okay with that. They still had picks to compliment the playmakers and fill depth.

I think I would, and like you Dem I would choose Vince, give them the run stuffer, the others can play both, with the extra pick maybe we can move up somewhere where we can get someone that may make a difference on our team.

  5. Bud Dupree- 2-3 year project. Seems like a great kid but lacks instincts and those aren't always coachable. He lacks technique and I'm not impressed by his motor.

Also of all the CBs at the top of the draft Collins has impressed me most in tackling ability. I'm awful at assessing coverage abilities so I'll add nothing more.

Well I just lost about 3 hours worth of work, I was in word and hit a button, deleted my entire list from 51-70 I had typed in. In fact it erased 1-50, but I was able to cut and paste from about 8 pages ago.

Is there any prospect that you think the Steelers are definitely going to draft, give me a shout. Some of the things I looked at is NOT the rankings on draft sites, but my gut. I put down 60 names and gave them anything from 5 stars to 2 stars and sorted them out. Guys who really dropped for me but I still included: Gerod Holliman, Larenzo Mauldin, Devn Funchess, Shaq Thompson, Alex Carter. I actually have Doran Grant ahead of Carter.

HEre is the list again, and I apologize for not updating it. A few of these guys are going to drop off the board or out of the top 50.

    1. Leonard Williams, DT, USC, 6-5, 302. nobody can aruge he is not BPA.
    2. Dante Fowler, DE/OLB, Florida, 6-2, 261. Violent burst, finds the ball, always in the backfield.
    3. Randy Gregory, OLB, Nebraska, 6-5 235. Smoother than Beasley, room to fill out.
    4. Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama. 6-1 200. Plug and play, more polished than White.
    5. Kevin White, WR, West Va. 6-3, 210. Bigger and faster than Cooper, I like Cooper's numbers.
    6. Trae Waynes, CB, Mich. St, 5-11, 188. Best at his positon in draft, plays off and press.
    7. Danny Shelton, DT, Washington. 6-2, 0.175 Tons, Better than Raji, I'm coming around on him.
    8. Shane Ray, DE, Missouri, 6-2, 245. Like him better after doing more research. I reserve the right to change my mind.
    9. Brandon Scherff, OL, Iowa, 6-5 319, Probably one of the safest picks in the draft, day 1 starter
    10. Landon Collins, SS, Alabama, 6-0 220. You know he is disciplined and ready to thump.
    11. Malcolm Brown, DT, Texas, 6-2, 320. Big, Powerful, hard to move.
    12. Jalen Strong, WR, Ariona 6-2, 217, locates the ball, highpoints it, strong hands.
    13. DeVonte Parker, WR, Louisville, 6-2 210. Solid player, third best WR in the draft by many.

    14. Bud Dupree, OLB, Kentucky, 6-4 269. Huge upside, a great piece of clay to mold.
    15. Vic Beasley, OLB, Clemson, 6-3 246. Explosive, but I wonder if his ceiling is already met.
    16. Jalen Collins, CB, LSU, 6-1 203, long corner, inexperienced but very talented.
    17. Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma, 6-5 329. Very raw, very scary dude with high ceiling.
    18. La'el Collins, OT, LSU. Versitale vs. run or pass, does everything well.
    19. Erick Flowers, OT, Miami, 6-6 329 Road grater, not the slickest of foot, but very powerful.
    20. Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford. No Character concerns, huge wingspan, needs to be meaner.
    21. Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia, 6-1 220. If he checks out medically, best RB in draft.
    22. Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State, 6-0 195. He extends the field plays faster than his 40
    23. Preston Smith, DE, Mississippi St. 6-5 270 Relentless and does everything well, sheds blocks.
    24. Breshaud Perriman, WR, Central FLA. 6-3 210, forget he played in the AAC, he is talented.
    25. Cameron Erving, OG, Florida State, 6-5 313. Value pick, plays all 5 OL positons, durable.

    29. Owamagbe Odighizuwa DE, UCLA, 6-3 267, athletic, big, well coached.
    30. Erik Armstead, DT, Oregon. 6-8 290. Measurables are insane, but he is very raw.
    31. DJ Humphries, OT, Florida, 6-5 307, athletic, great feet, not sure if he upgrades beachum.
    32. David Johnson, RB, Northern Iowa, 6-1, 220. Does everything well including returning kicks.
    33. Byron Jones, CB, UConn. 6-0, 190. Watched him play for 4 years, better than Dwayne Gratz
    34. Quentin Rollins, CB, Miami (OH), another freak athlete that has a high celing.
    35. Xavier Cooper, DT, Washington State, 6-4, 298, great depth at the 5, can line up anywhere.
    36. Marcus Peters, CB, Washington, 5-11 190, outstanding corner with questionable character.
    37. TJ Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh, 6-5 309. Similar to Humphries, but even more raw.
    38. Eli Harold, OLB, Virginnia, 6-3 247 some bad tape, good character, hard not to root for him
    39. Nate Orchard, OLB, Utah, 6-3 250, one year wonder, but he can get to the QB
    40. Ronald Darby, CB, Florida State, 5-11 188. quick feet and back pedal, very fast.

Big Board Decision, Really like Xavier Cooper think he fits as a situational 5 technique he replaces at 35:, Dorial Green- Beckham- Jacoby & Myers, Sacco & Vinsetti.. NO THANKS. Just watched his interview, this kid is CANCER. I have Shaq Thompson down in the 70's, he is about to get dropped like an oiled up Mackeral unless someone can figure out if he stops with the "I want to be a LB" instead of "my dream is to play in the NFL, I will play where the coaches tell me to play"

I thought he wanted to play QB? Maybe Tebo can play safety.

  9. ny, when DGB was at Mizzou he got free weed from a dealer here and took every advantage. Been around the guy a fair amount on campus and I really can't say anything to counter what you said.

Ok got it, kid is a head case no F'n Thanks.

Tomlin. & Colbert were in East Lansing as I
Predicted, easy one to call. Not much info yet, but I feel Trae Waynes was one of several targets incuding Jeremy Langford. The WR Lipett possibly and Taiwan Jones

Mike Mayock's top 5 TE list has MyCole Pruitt. Word is he did not have a good showing at his pro day according to nflcom.

Marcus Rush (6-2 1/4, 247) played defensive end during his time at Michigan State, but worked out at linebacker during the pro day. Rush ran the 40 in 4.69 and 4.74 seconds. He had a 34-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-9 broad jump. He did the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.24 secnds and the three-cone drill in 6.75 seconds. He performed 24 strength lifts.

Keep an eye on this kid.. saw a couple other write ups on him..... ah .. a DE in a 4-3 making the possible switch to OLB in a 3-4..... I like it. Looks like a good value at a lower price....

    enjoy,

    bb

Got to love the kids last name......

  15. I really feel like this cycle keeps repeating over and over and over. Bridgewater had good tape and was solid off the field. Luck was solid on and off the field. Mariotta was solid on and off the field, but will have to learn how to play in a pro-style offense (unless he is taken by the Eagles) and that DOES take time. However, nothing in his background shows that he will not succeed. I don't think he will be a hall-of-fame player, but I think he can sure win a few games.

Winston, on the other hand, sounds like Manziel, Jamarcus Russell, and MANY other players that had huge red flags attached to them between off-field issues and a lack of solid work ethic that WILL NOT fly at the next level.

I get that these kids may be talented, but the red flags attached to them, the media frenzy, the possibility of getting that phone call where a star player was arrested for doing something stupid?it's just not worth it. People are staking their claim with Winston and I truly believe that he will end up like Geno Smith, EJ Manuel, or Johnny Football. College success does not translate to the pros unless you are willing to work like a dog to make it happen.

Tammie Brady didn't have a good combine either and he went in the 6th round. Sometimes too much stock is put into the physical attributes and none in the mental aspects. It's also a team game. You should look at the players team as a whole to get a better perspective on the 1 player a team likes......K, I'm done preaching for today...... :)

  17. StlCrtn Franchise Player Steelers

True but Tom Brady probably fails on the other 30 team (at the time).

  18. Tomlin is here is Columbia today, I'm already drunk at the bar though so I won't be making it over to try and watch any pro day stuff.

Shane Ray gone early. Top 12. Markus Golden in Round 3 I'm on board.

  20. jcsteelfan Franchise Player Steelers

We could see Fowler, Gregory, Beasley, and Ray all go in the top 12. After his combine numbers and the eye test Dupree could join that list. Dupree is the only top pass rusher I could see dropping to the Steelers at 22.

Reading more and more that there will be a trade at #2 for Mariota. How much are the Titans going to get for the pick?
