One thing I want to be clear on, the combine is just a check the box exercise. But a lot of these guys I am not checking the boxes on. NFL network made a good point on Beasley, numbers are off the chart, but he gets washed out in traffic.

I hope the Steelers get faster on D, not emmualting Seattle, but that speed to the ball makes a lot of difference. Shelton is gone in the top 10, but if you can find a NT that can collapse the Center or at least tie up 2 linemen, you got something. beach mentioned McClendon's Chronic Shoulder, and I am not sure if Shade Tree is the heir apparent NT. Guys like Simon out of Northwestern middle rounds. Also guys that can move up and down the line, like they do with Heyward, multi-positional guys.,

One guy I would not even bring as a free agent, Ellis McCarthy. Dude could not even take coaching from Mark Gorscak on the hand placement on the 40 yard dash. I am not sure but I don't remember seeing him run a second time and Rich Eisen mentioned that Gorscak threw someone out of the drill. I know in the past he has removed cameramen and Instagram guy not sure if a player was ever ejected. You could see scouts and coaches getting pissed at this kid just holding up the process. The knock on him is work ethic and pad level, Yikes.

I am thinking I got McCarthy wrong was it Orr that could not even get his hand right? Point is 7 hours of combine yesterday even Mike Mayock lost it, going all Funk-a-Delic

Tre McBride from William & Mary was a small kid school that stood out to me during the WR drills. Reminds me of Antonio Brown.

This draft could yield a handful of solid 3-4 nose guards.

Maybe I missed it but if you're talking about the SEC championship he didn't lose his cool. He smashed the QB and they threw him out for "targeting". I can see a late hit being called because he could have pulled up but an ejection was just stupid. Ray likes to hit QBs, I love that about him and it shows up on the tapes above.

    http://www.totalprosports.com/2014/12/06/shane-ray-ejected-hit-blake-sims/

Not sure how that play could be a "big red flag". Maybe there was another game that I missed where he lost his cool?

They aren't highlight reels. They are complete games that show every play both good and bad. They just condense the game down so you don't have to spend two hours to see one game. And then spend two hours to watch the guy across from him (Golden - 33 - who flashed a few times on those tapes). In less than an hour you can watch 2 guys play 4 complete games.

Now after watching those I can see why you might think they were highlight films because Ray was as beast wherever they lined him up. 245lbs and they lined him up as a 3 technique and he was beating guys left and right. His first step quickness is unmatched.

Which game did you see of him? I'll check it out it.

Byron Jones jUst broad jumped out of the RCA Dome. Told you guys I liked this kid, missed him on my mocks because I was taking CB early and often.

Doran Grant, like him too. Nothing flashy, but he turned and ran well.

Durrel Eskridge looks too thin, but he ran better than a lot of the other safeties.

Truthfully I don't even remember, Sometimes I channel surf on Saturdays. But remember that target game costing his team. He may have that nasty streak. Maybe I saw a cat losing his cool and it soured me on him. I trust my instincts and you can go back a ton of posts and I did mention Ray being a hot head.

Yeah I just don't see the correlation between a late hit and being a hot head. If every guy that hit a QB late was labeled as a hot head you'd run out of guys to draft. You want a guy like James Harrison to mentor our young LBs but you don't want draft a kid for rushing the passer? I don't get it.

When was Harrison a hot head, he had to adjust his game to the NEW rules. Harrison is an assassin wearing 92 with a unique low center of gravity and strength to lift up and move guys that outweigh him by 50-100 lbs. Ray is a freak with a quck first step. In that targeting foul, if you think he should not have been ejected then we agree to disagree. It was cheap and flagrant by the NEW RULES. Did I agree with it 10 years ago, NO. but in today's game, that was an easy call.

I'm not suggesting Harrison was a hot head, you're the one trying to draw the parallel between hot head and roughing the passer. I'm questioning how a guy known for roughing the passer (he had another this year) is a guy you want mentoring our young passers but you don't want a kid who got a roughing the passer call in college?

J.J. Watt led the NFL in roughing the passer calls. He's a hot head? This is just silly. The kid is not a "hot head" because he had a roughing the passer call - and that's all that is in the NFL. 15 yards and an invoice from Goodell on Friday.

Shane Ray may bust in the NFL, just like any prospect may bust but to disqualifying him for hitting the QB baffles me.

Rule no. 1. Know the targetting rules. Ray can adjust, he can be coached, I am on board with that. But it begs to ask the question can he control his emotions, that is a good question. Is he able to put team first, don't know. I did like the fact he held the heavy bag in the drills yesterday, he could have just sat on the sidelines and moped.

I guess I want the next great OLB with no holes in his game, wish me luck, hard to find. I think we had something in Jarvis Jones, heck most of us were on board. Two seasons of stunted growth, lack of strength, injuries, and the switch is not ON yet. I just want Colbert to get it right, we all do.

We need players that have that meanness to them but at the same time has got to play smart, don't want plays that might cost us games, refs are too flag happy these days.

NYB, how did the Dupree kid from Kentucky look to you yesterday?

  16. beachbum Legend Manager Steelers

Well no sense beating it to death but I could see your point if it was an after the whistle play borne out of frustration. But it was just an aggressive pass rush that he should have held up on. I want he guys that hit the QB. There are gonna be some late hits. That's part of being a pass rusher.

  17. nybites M.V.P. Steelers UCONN

He looked good, but if you watch film, you wonder does he get washed out or take plays off, might be a technique or a scheme thing. Really I have no clear cut OLB that I will bang the table for right now.

beach is right, we need a guy to sack the QB. I am just not high on Ray being a complete OLB, but then again is there one in this draft?

Trae Waynes won't make it to 22, kid just smoked the 40 with a 4.35. Marcus Peters was much slower at 4.57 and the off the field crap scares me.

Forget Byron Jones as a sleeper, he's going much earlier than some of the draft sites had him. I think Draftek had him in the top 250 (214)and Draftscout even lower, 253. Class this missed. He is going day 2 and I think once his shoulder heals that team will get a good football player.

Shane Ray is a guy I've seen projected as a top ten pick. He was the SEC 2014 defensive player of the year. Shouldn't that translate into success in the NFL? The two previous SEC defensive player of the year awards have gone to Jarvis Jones and Michael Sam.

Jarvis Jones was once projected as a top ten pick because he was a stud in the SEC but fell after the combine. Shane Ray looks to be on the same course right now. I hope he's gone before the Steelers pick so we don't have to debate about whether or not they should have taken him.

  19. I know people are usually opposed to moving up and sacrificing extra picks but this might be the year to do it. I doubt Beasley (with added weight/the way he tested at the combine), Dupree or Waynes will be available at 22 now. I like Maxx Williams but not at 22. None of the other corners w/ Peters having character concerns warrant that selection IMO. It's really down to Collins or Thompson (if either are on the board of course), and I doubt the Steelers go safety in round one.

It might be worth vaulting ahead of division foes like Cleveland at 19 and Cinci at 21, or moving even higher to secure one of Fowler (who will likely go top 7 so likely not him), Dupree, Beasley or Ray. I want a pass rusher. Easiest way to respectability on defense.

  20. I really don't see this happening. The Steelers are not unwilling to do this, especially when they really aren't that far off from being a complete team, but I see them staying put and grabbing talent that falls. I really think pass rushers will come off the board super early, and the Steelers will sit back and wait.

That being said, this is entirely dependent on what the Steelers do in Free Agency. If the re-sign Woirlds or McPhee (who I think will command a similar amount), I think the Steelers go a different way in the first round and get a pass rusher in later rounds.
