Is Maxx Williams a first round talent or is this draft lacking TE talent? It will be interesting to see how Williams performs at the combine. Can he block? I've read that he has great hands and body control.

Rookie pass rushers haven't been overly successful recently. If the Steelers want to improve the pass rush next year their best bet is to resign Worilds (if they can) and play with a scheme that doesn't require him to drop in coverage as often.

NY was high on Hauoli Kikaha a while back. Still high on him? I wouldn't mind seeing a guy like him or Nate Orchard grabbed in the second round if they are available.

Kikaha could be a liability in coverage, Nate Orchard is a step above. However Orchard is a one year phenom & Kikaha had major knee surgery. 2 other cats that fit the DE to OLB mold in this range: Lorenzo Maulden, Markus Golden

That would be a stars-align draft if Clive Walford fell to us in the 4th. ;D

His stock is up to the point that it'd make sense for us to pick him in the 2nd.

So here is the possible players available at 22, who are not a QB, RB, or a 4-3 DE,

Landin Collins cannot see him getting past Cincy
Trae Waynes- not a fan of BTW
Marcus Peters- more red flags than China, but I would not say NFW.
Arik Armstead- I dunno man, he is pretty unpolished
Vic Beasley- yeah he can play in the 3-4
Shaq Thompson- not sure he isn't a 4-3 OLB
Alvin Dupree- very possible but Kentucky doesn't fit the pattern of big conferences
    Gerod Holliman- over hyped JMFO
Danny Shelton- a 2 down NT who I saw get washed out more than I prefer to see
Davante Parker- 2nd best WR on many board, but not a Power Conference player
Jalen Collins- I know he is a second rounder, right, but based on what?/ ESPN LOL, Draftek, or Walter Football? Show me his rating on OurLad's, then we'll hash this one out.
    ---------------------------

For me - Got to throw this big fella in the mix - you guys know I like the trenches...

Cameron Erving OT/OG/C Florida St - very versatile.. Started on the Dline as a freshmen.. switched to OT - has played OG and started last year at OC.. Aggressive run blocker, great athleticism.... Munchak could do wonders with this kid.

I'd have no problem with Erving at 22... None of the guys on the above list 1) will be there - see Shelton as an example or 2) thrill me as a #1 draft pick - see Vic Beasley - he has a way to go.

Erving could backup every spot along the line and possible beat out one of the starters right away.. He's also better than Zach Martin - A 1st round pick from a year ago...

Yeah - its not a need so much - but I'd have him as my Best player available over the above list.

    enjoy,

    one of the idiots

We need both tackle and guard depth anyway. He fits our range, too.

  9. Just to add some much-needed fun to this board, Mel Kiper, Jr. (who, I think we can all agree, is an absolute genius when it comes to drafting), has the Steelers selecting Landon Collins, SS from Alabama in round one.

First of all, this is a VERY weak safety class (what is happening with safeties the past 3 years?) and, as a result of that, I don't see him making it to 22. I also don't think he is a huge upgrade to "the Shark" as he is good against the run, but has average speed and gets beat in coverage. Thomas is PROBABLY going to be the starting strong safety next year and I don't think it is necessary for the team to draft to replace Troy P until Thomas proves he truly can't handle the job.

I suggested months ago the Browns might decide to trade up and get Mariota. They have the extra first round pick and a real need. Looks like it may happen. I thought they should have taken Bridgewater last year. After a season with Johnny football I bet the Browns wish they had taken anybody but that overrated arrogant little prick. Kevin O'Connell is currently preparing Mariota for the NFL. O'Connell is also joining the Browns coaching staff as QB coach this season.

I don't see Vic Beasley as an option for the Steelers even if he's there at number 22. He's not big enough to play OLB in the 3-4. Shazier is just as big and fast as Beasley. Shaq Thompson is in the same boat. Hopefully a few teams picking prior to the Steelers grab these two...push some solid talent down the board to the Steelers.

  11. Beasley and Thomas both remind me of Mingo. Very tall, but don't really have the build of a solid OLB in a 3-4 scheme at the next level. Both of them relied heavily on their God-given athletic talent, rather than perfecting pass-rushing techniques. Jarvis Jones had to learn this lesson the hard way and we've seen how long that road has been.

I don't see either of those guys on the board at 22, though, so I'm not even banking on them as possibilities.

Kentucky is in the SEC, I would say that's a big conference.

We got a hall of Famer from Kentucky once

My bad on Kentucky I got it mixed up with Louisville for reaons unknown. Dupree won't be there and he may be a better 4-3 end. The combine will sort this all
    Out.

Everyone with brain power above Amoeba last year told these buttwipes that Johnny Doche-aroo was a horrible prospect. Even Kiper saw it, so how bad was he? He was below shark sh't, which is on the ocean floor. BTW a Brown's fan was caught peeing on Modells grave, google it.

BINGO. Side note that our future LT was taken in the same draft 8 rounds later, Eastern Kentucky. 27 years later LT has supplanted every other position of value other than QB. In 2015 Jackson would be a top 10 pick.

Listened to the podcast on Steelers Depot, interesting but I learned nothing. Basically OLB is hard to evaluate in the draft, medical & interview are paramount, yada yada yada. As much as they review film they lock onto players like everyone else.

I like Erving over Flowers if they go OL. The D and lack of pressure cost the team. Even Helen Keller would have picked up on that. Free agency will also reshape their board, no bout adout it. They went LB in the first round in consecutive years, not sure if that equates to anything other than me looking at trends and leaning away from 3 times in a row.

  19. LoveTheSteelers Franchise Player Steelers

Pending combine results, I think there are only 14-15 players worthy of a first round grade that would fit the Steelers' systems. A couple of those are WRs, so that drops the number to 12-13. Of those players, I would say only 4 will even possibly be available at 22.

First of all, am I wrong to eliminate WR from consideration? Quality depth at that position is still important, but is it that important?

Second, as was already mentioned, there is a bunch of comparable talent that will run off the board between picks 20 and 70. So if they can drop back 5 spots and pick up a 3rd or 4th round pick I think that may wind up as their best option.

I don't expect much in FA this season, as extensions for Ben & Heyward and a new deal for Worilds will eat up all their cap room. If Worilds fetches more than $8 million per I don't think the Steelers will keep him, making OLB the #1 priority this spring.

  20. demolisher43 Franchise Player Steelers

The Rooneys have already said the pass rush is their primary concern this offseason. OLB could be their #1 priority regardless. Even so, I don't know if Colbert goes that way in the first round. Besides Dupree, I don't really see who we'd pick at the position at 22. It's the second round where Colbert will have his treasure trove of pass-rushers and other talent.

EDIT: It's also kind of wrong to dismiss WR entirely considering the first-round talent at the position this year. Jaelen Strong and Dorial Green-Beckham will certainly be there at 22, although I expect the latter to fall out of the first round entirely if he does nothing to convince teams he's not a risk.

My ideal pick at 22 is Marcus Peters, provided he too can prove he isn't a character concern.
