Still the depth isn't great even with worilds. SteelersDepot put together a story about JJ and the thought that he may be a miss and has to overcome too many bad habits to become a solid contributor. They really have to bring back James Harrison if in training camp they see more of the same from JJ.

That would suck!! It would set us back a few years at that position.

The article makes some sense. I see his point. However, I think I will wait and see what happens with him this year with a year under his belt and Joey Porter in his head before I worry too much about him.

The article did make sense, but if the majority of his issues are technique then I expect that to be resolved in a short time. Why expect that he'll make the same mistakes in year 2? I just have a hard time believing that poor technique will continue to be the norm. But I did appreciate the article because it talks about flexibility and technique that will help me evaluate performances on film this season.

I just think JJ is going to be a different type of OLB. He's not a speed guy, he's an instinct guy that has the ability to win with leverage and violent hands. When Steelers fans think about pressure they immediately think of our OLBs but there are lots of ways to apply pressure. I expect a lot of blitzes up the middle, safeties and CBs coming off the edge, Heyward and McLendon pushing the pocket, etc.

Jarvis Jones can be a great player on this team and still only contribute 8-10 sacks a year. Terrell Suggs has average 9.0 sacks a year (I took out his injury year) and been a great player in Baltimore. I think JJ will be a similar kind of player. He won't threaten the sack record but he'll help in lots of different ways because he's so instinctive.

I think that's a fair point, beach. In watching the tape of last year's games, it seemed like Jarvis was always one step away. One step away from a sack, one step away from a tackle-for-loss, one step away from getting in the passing lane. I expect he will have picked up that step and we'll see a solid performer on the field this season.

I never worry about technique issues with rookies. I look for explosion and instincts. Technique (and also strength) come in years two and three. If his technique hasn't improved by the end of this year, I'll worry.

Besides, the first set of photos they show (supposedly showing how he uses the wrong feet on a bullrush) seemed to me to be showing a speed rush and not a bullrush. He was clearly trying to run around the blocker there, not through him-- so that seemed like a weak example to show, and therefore I am unconvinced.

If this happens it will be very bad news for the Steelers there is a reason Harrison was cut by the Bengals and a reason that he has not signed with another team. Love what James did for the team but I dont think he has anything left in the tank so if he becomes the best option because JJ flounders the D is in trouble.

To be fair, I think Harrison flopped with the Bengals due to scheme. He's not a 4-3 OLB and he really should have never been added to that defense. Had he been on a 3-4 team, I think he'd have been better last season.

That said, he's pretty old now and that'll scare away a lot of teams after they look at his stat line last year

Yes he did not fit the scheme but there was more than one report of him looking slow.

Mike Mitchell already on the PUP ( Groin ):/

  12. manosteel9423 Franchise Player Steelers

Sucks, but it happens. He's not been injury prone in his career, so I won't worry too much yet. This team has never been so healthy going into training camp so far as I can remember! If a week off for Mitchell for a slight groin problem is the worst they have to deal with, I will consider them very lucky!

Yeah I agree mano. It just kinda makes me think here we go again.

Keep your eyes on a lean DE, that could blossom into a 5 technique. Corey Crawford out of Clemson. The Tigers have lost a lot of talent to the NFL over the last few drafts, time to see if this guy can step up his game, given more reps.

I'll keep an eye on Devin Funchess out of Michigan. He's a WR/TE at 6'5", 235. He's a junior who caught 49 passes in 2013 for 748 yards and 6 TDs. His biggest game came at home against Minnesota, when he caught 7 passes for 151 yards and a TD. He also got a 100-yard game @ Penn State the following week off 4 catches, two of which went for TDs.

Some cons: Michigan wants to phase him into being a full-time WR, and the Steelers need a TE more. Beach's concern about WR experience should be at red alert with this guy. May not come out if he wants to bolster his stock as a WR in his senior year.

I want harrison back. JJ still needs work and the depth is lacking. Unless the ILB want to switch over what other choice is there? A guy who gave us this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqnQwKAI4OE deserves it.. at vet minimum which he would take I'm sure.

The problem is he is not that guy anymore. Yes it was a fantastic moment that will live in the hearts of Steelers fans forever but is in the past just like Harrison needs to be.

actually i disagree with dfepth at OLB, I think it[s one of the deeper positions on the roster. Someone who gets cut will find another team,, their is a $hit-ton of talent at LB in camp..

What is with the TE injuries, sheesh. Paulson won't get past the second cut, he's toast.

  20. steelersking M.V.P. Steelers

He will if the rest go down with injuries like they have been.
