    Notre Dame, Tight End Factory?

    Jun 29 at 9:50 PM

Last April the Cincinatti Bengals selected Tyler Eiffert, TE, Notre Dame with the 21st overall selection. Marvin Lewis already had Germain Gresham on his roster, but with Division rival Baltimore lining up Ed Dickson and Dennis Pita, the Bengals followed suit. It seems the 2 TE set has become the latest fad, starting with Bill Belichick selecting Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Brady lit up the league, and other teams took notice. Not just Baltimore and Cincinnati, but The Indianapolis Colts jumped on the band wagon back in 2012.

Andrew Luck was the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, it was a no-brainer. In successive rounds following the Franchise QB, they took 2 Tight Ends, back to back. It seems the Patriots had laid the blueprint on how to create mismatches and the Colts were giving Luck some immediate targets with Coby Fleeener and Dwayne Allen. Fleener a teammate of Luck's at Stanford would give the young QB a familiar face to play pitch and catch.

A few months back in the beginning of May, another TE was taken from Notre Dame, his name: Troy Niklas. Niklas standing 6-7 weighing 270 lbs. was another weapon Bruce Airians added to an already talented TE corps. Arizona had taken John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame, off the waiver wire, originally drafted in the second round by Seattle in 2008. Give the Cardinals now a pair of Notre Dame TE's, along with Rob Housler. Those of you who follow the draft closely remember the athletic Houser coming out of Florida Atlantic as a special athlete. Housler ran in the 4.4's by some stop watches, amazing for a man of his size. (6-5 248).

Fast forward to the up and coming NCAA football season, and keep an eye on a blue collar, blue chip TE prospect, from..... you guessed it, Notre Dame. Ben Koyack is currently rated as the 3rd highest rated TE in the 2015 draft class. Devin Funchess is dynamic but needs to hit the weight room. Nick O'Leary, grandson of Jack Nicklas, is a promising TE out of Florida State who is not prototypical of today's taller TE's. So there you have it, Notre Dame, Tight End Factory. It will be fun to watch Everette Golson and how Koyack blocks for him,, or gives him a safety valve. Stay tuned because by the time next May rolls around Koyack will be cemented into the second round and may even surpass Funchess and O'Leary.

I am hardly ever on a PC, my Ipad and IPhone are my staple, much easier to use. However.... they don't want to function as well when it comes to my postings on my draft profile.

If you look up sympathy in the dictionary, it's half-way between $hit and syphilis. Here is the thing, these kids and young men, many of whom come from poverty, just blow cash like there is no tomorrow. What the casual fan does not realize is that there are hidden expenses associated with being a top athlete. Your agent, meals on the road, wardrobe. Where it gets out of hand is the bling and the mansions. If they would buy a nice 500,000 house and drive an Audi or a Range Rover, they'd be okay. It's the 12 room house with 4 bathrooms and 2 Lamberghini's in the garage that get them into trouble. Plus I think peer pressure and family pressure take their toll. It's very cool for a son to buy his mom a house, or to give to charity, but there are leaches and a lot of people with their hand out.

You also have the "Look at me now" mentality with them gong out to clubs, picking up tabs, etc.., I wish some of the smarter older players would explain this crap to these dummies. Of course Uncle Fred, and your lifelong buddies want to dip into the pockets of these guys. Guys like Troy Polamalu who drove the same Nissan Pickup for years, get it. One more aspect is the bad advice they get. A lot of them want to get even richer and invest in restaurants, bars, and a business they know nothing about and trust strangers to run. I believe they have a seminar for rookies on what to expect in the NFL and how to manage the money. But like most seminars I used to attend, they lose you after the second break.

Yeah I am technology challenged, I almost need a tutorial on stuff I've never done before. Hopefully someone liked the article.
I have some health issues that came up, and old problem from 2 years ago came back, probably going to need treatment and more testing.

  7. Because of the high amount of ex-NFL stars that end up filing for bankruptcy, the rookie symposium has SEVERAL sessions devoted entirely to managing money. The league is up front with rookies, admitting that most of them will be out of football within the next 3-4 years, so they should be smart with what they have and who they associate with. Many of these players come from very poor backgrounds and have no idea or concept how to manage their money intelligently. Teams have also come a long way, offering professional and life development classes to players to help them cope with the extreme changes that come with being a professional athlete. As cold hearted as it is, players that do not take advantage of these opportunities have no one to blame but themselves.

On another thread, I think it was Jeanquev that brought up the stats that the Steelers gave up more passing yardage in the 2nd half of the season compared to the 1st half. Considering how the Steelers started compared to how they ended, it's a good bet that opposing teams passed more when the Steelers stopped the run better in the 2nd half of the season. Which is why they won most of the games compared to the 1st half of the season. There has to be a reason (turnovers, interceptions, fumbles) not included, I'would think they gave up less yards on the ground. I'm too lazy, if anybody wants to look that stat up?

Who cares about last year anymore? We have to figure out about this year.

  15. Without looking anything up, I can go ahead and make an accurate assessment of why teams passed on the Steelers more in the second half of the season?the offense was averaging 28 points a game! To counterbalance that, teams will immediately go to the air to try and score quickly or, at the very least, keep up. The plan this year is to have a base no-huddle offense (though, no one will actually admit to that) and keep teams in sub packages, with smaller guys on the field. This should allow them to score A LOT and take the pressure off the young defense.

If you go to Steelers.com all the offensive players and coaches are talking a lot about the no huddle. I think we are going to run it almost all the time except when milking the clock at the end of a game we have a nice lead in.

  17. They are talking a lot about the no-huddle, but even Roethlisberger was hesitant to call it their "base" offense. I think we are going to see a very similar offense that Haley ran with the Cardinals when Kurt Warner was there (i.e. 2008 Super Bowl season). However, with Bell, Blount and Archer, it would be a smart move for the team to play the balanced attack and run the ball A LOT. Sure, the no-huddle is a great way to score points and give Big Ben the ability to adjust to defensive looks on the fly (which he is VERY good at) but controlling the clock is the name of the game.

The Steelers were able to put up a lot of points during the 2nd half of last year with a lot of no-huddle, but they also re-established their running game that had been missing for a few seasons. I know this is now a passing league, but a decent defense and a running game are STILL the ingredients to championship football. Look no further than the Bronco's powerhouse offense getting steamrolled in the Super Bowl by the Seahawks who (shockingly) relied on a running game a defense all season. The Ravens did the same thing two seasons before and the list goes on and on.

You obviously have to be able to score points to win games, but controlling the clock is MUCH more important. A good 2-minute offense is great, but having a drive that takes 8-10 minutes off the clock AND results in a touchdown is almost a killshot, ESPECIALLY if this is done in the 2nd half. You tire the other defense, give your defense plenty of time to rest, and the other offense has to brush the cobwebs off under pressure and make something happen.

The Steelers are a good team and, while I think the offense is going to be VERY good, I would be surprised to see them stray too far from what has been their bread-and-butter forever.

Haley has an affinity for throwing to the backs. Bell and Archer will catch a lot of balls. And both can catch. Then theres Heath Miller, and the wideouts. Bell and Blount can run the ball. Looks pretty explosive to me. All teams are throwing more these days. It's a passing league now. But you have to be able to run the ball to set up the pass......So the run is important also.

EDIT: I should say at least make the opposing team respect the run so they can't just tee off......
