That must have been a quick conversation between Tomlin and Colbert, because they wore Goodel out picking so quickly.

It takes about 3 years to get a bead on a draft. Unless they cut a lot of picks......

Wow, I was just looking at the Steelers roster and saw some players we were talking about on this thread when it was on seebs and they are now 5-6 year players. It is really hard to believe this thread is like 5 years old. It is too bad we lost 3+ years worth of post from seebs. Hopefully us older fans can keep this thread alive another 5 years. I am 50 so yea I am an older fan.

Actually we only missed a y ear plus of posts, but C BLOW Ess deleted posts when we got to 10,000 something about their servver was outdated & wimpy and they didn't have the balls to upgrade it.

They reportedly loved Shamarko. If Troy's heir apparent is worth two mid-round picks, I'm glad we took the chance.

The Texans took Louis Nix with our former third-round pick. If Thomas turns out better than Nix, it will have been a good move.

    New Defense?

Steelers move away from 3-4 as spread offenses force more 'situational football'
Submitted by 60 Max Power O Staff

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense is known for its 3-4 base formation; however, with the explosion of spread offenses around the NFL, the need has lessened linebacker heavy personnel for more substitution packages.

As most offenses operate with three wide sets, it forces the defense to bring in a nickel package that features an extra defensive back at the cost of removing a linebacker.

This also forces the defensive line to change as the outside rushing linebacker becomes the fourth down lineman.

?I think our nickel package is more of a four-man line,? defensive lineman Cam Heyward said, via Alan Robinson of Tribelive.com.

?If we have to beef it up, we have some different fronts where we can add another defensive lineman, take a corner or a linebacker out. It all depends on the situation.?

coach Mike Tomlin says it's all about 'situational football' and now the offense dictates what the defense has to do personnel wise.

?I think in today's NFL, it's about situational football and what offenses do, and how many receivers they have on the field,? Tomlin said. ?Oftentimes we spend a lot of time in sub-package football, whether you are in a 3-4 or a 4-3.?

?Mike (Tomlin), his strength is a 4-3 team,? NFL Network analyst Jamie Dukes said. ?They haven't been able to find the personnel that fit the style of defense that Dick (LeBeau) likes to play.?

That's a ridiculous article. Not even worth commenting on except to say it's stupid.

Jamie Dukes is Warren Sapp Light. Same unbelievable crap but less filling.

I saw some of this on Twitter.

The might as well with all the little speedy LB's that arent big or tough
    enough to take on OL.
Worilds injured often and JJ didnt gain any weight so he likely
will not be much of a pass rushing threat, decsent LB but no PR threat.
You can tell Tomlin is still a Tamapa2 fan so go for it.

Personally, I agree with the article. There is more situational football with 3 receivers on the field most of the time it seems. Therefore you DO need speed to counter act. The game is changing to more of a passing game and the new rules every year. And if you look at who the Steelers drafted, I think Tomlin & Colbert believes the same thing, along with me,, by myself, so it seems. The speed is a counter act to the OL. No matter how big a player is, a player with speed can beat him one on one. You just need to look at who the Steelers drafted to realize this.......I'm going to put my faith in Tomlin tweaking his system to counter act what other teams do.......

Somebody said in a post not long ago that 6'1" linebackers are too small. If they are too small, why are the small fast linebackers considered the best in the league? I guess I'm on my own on this one...... *YES*

The article is about the Steelers changing to a 4-3 defense. It begins talking about the nickel, but only to make the point that it turns the defense into a 4-man front. Then it is summed up with the final line, which is something like "they haven't been able to find players who fit in Lebeau's system". The author wrote, of all things, that the reason to switch is because Tomlin knows the 4-3 better. I imagine after this long, Mike Tomlin understands the 3-4 just fine. The article is crap, and is insulting to Mike Tomlin, Dick Lebeau, and the entire Steeler organization. I'm upset with myself, that I actually commented on something I already stated deserves no comment. But I typed it already, so I will hit "Submit reply"

But I do agree with you Igloo - the additional speed is fantastic and will help the team win football games. But that article... *REF*

True LTS, they were talking about the 4-3 defense and how Tomlin likes it and mentioned Lebeau's defensive scheme. But I think the majority of the article is to change because the NFL is changing. You have the 3-4 wideouts, there are teams with 2 TE's, the running game is important, no question, but the passing sets up the run now. Completely opposite of a few years ago. Like I said with all of the passing going on to wideouts, TE's and players coming out of the backfield, the scheme has to counteract that. And the best way to do it ,imo, is to draft speed. As I posted before, you only need to look at the last Steelers draft to get an opinion on how their thinking of counteracting......So I guss we are taking 2 different things away from the article......I don't know if you caught one of my posts but the Steelers are supposed to throw to Bell a lot more. Haley likes to throw to backs who can catch the ball. And Bell can catch the ball which makes him a 2-time threat. Put him in with the WR's ans Drej Archer with Ben and that's a pretty solid offenseas theOL should bebetter this year aslo.....

  14. LoveTheSteelers Franchise Player Steelers

They may throw to him more, or maybe not. He averaged 3.3 catches per game as a rookie, and he may step up to 4 per game. More if the WRs or OL struggle, because Ben will have to dump off more often. Less if the running game prospers because if you can run effectively you don't need as many designed RB passes. I'm excited about the offense this year, and the defense in 2 years...

If you look up Haley's stats on throwing the football to backs, you'll be surprised LTS. Just go back to his years in Arizona and he had Fitzgerald there as a WR......I also read an article that the Steelers were going to go to the backs more and the article had Haley's stats on how much he likes to throw to them.......And it's a good amount......And Bell can catch the ball, add in Archer on top of it plus the receivers and TE.......Pretty explosive with Ben throwing the ball.....

And probably a couple of the toughest LB's in the league.

  17. manosteel9423 Franchise Player Steelers

Yes, and his point was they are only about 5 lbs bigger than Ryan Shazier...the guy you keep saying is too small for an inside linebacker.

I guess the Steelers aren't interested in Flowers as an article I just read said he was not going to pay the Steelers a vsiit.....

He's going to want big money His best course of action is to stay in shape, and wait for a Pre=season injury, a team desperate for a nickel back or a spot starter.
