I read an article by someone about a month ago that said the NFL has about 10 years left? I can understand it with them getting taken to court all the time for millions and millions, which could turn into billions by players that are not even in the game anymore. Now they have another lawsuit from players saying team doctors are a conflict of interest and don't have the players best health as a priority. They believe team doctors work for the team are more or less pressured to get players back on the field for the team. I was watching Mike and Mike this morning Golic wasn't there, so Chris Carter took his place. And Carter thinks a player should know what's right and wrong and that the NFL is not responsible. Meantime, Marcellus Wuiley was on the phone and he was going to sign the petition because he was misdiagnosed by team doctors and played while injured his last 7 seasons, but he knew he wasn't as good as before the injury. He finally got a 2nd opinion when he retired and found out he had a bad injury and should of sat out the year, but he played because team doctors said he was able too. I think the line should be drawn if a player wants to see his own doctor. That way, anything that happens is on him.....

Am I missing something breed? Do slow guys get a better grip on a wet or snowy field?

Sorry, breed, give me the speed, bad weather or good weather, speed kills, as long as the guy is also a good football player and, by all accounts, these guys are.

And I think the rumors of the NFL's demise are greatly exagerrated...

Oh my goodness, once again I am agreeing with Mano. Too many people confuse speed or skill with the so-called "finesse" game. Yes, we do talk about the finesse game suffering in bad weather, but speed and skill are not the same thing as finesse. New England and Green Bay have shown that speed and pass-heavy offenses can thrive in cold weather if the players are tough and focused and are committed to physicality. Mike Wallace and Willie Parker didn't seem to suffer from the cold and wet; their speed was just as deadly regardless of conditions.

I've also read comparisons to the Raiders' failed focus on speed. The Raiders did a horrible job with their emphasis on speed during Al Davis' last decade because he tended to draft guys who were fast but NOT great football players, believing that his coaches could teach the skills necessary to turn the fast guys into players. Some, like Mike Mitchell-- as evidenced from his play last year in Carolina, did learn how to turn their speed into play, but most never did; they were just track stars not football players. At first glance, it looks like the speed guys the Steelers have drafted this year are all football players. That excites me.

That reminds me of someone on See, BS - can't remember who it was - who used to preach to us about the evils of mobile quarterbacks... we never successfully got him to see that mobility is something to be desired - Ben Roethlisberger is a mobile quarterback, for example. He was talking about Dennis Dixon, Michael Vick, and other guys whose production relied primarily on their running ability, but he used the phrase "mobile quarterback".

Watching NFL AM, without Molly Qeriim. It's like eating ribs without bbq sauce.

Anyhow, They continue to discuss Michaeal Vick. In my eyes his debt has no ceiling, I will never forget the dispicable and cowardly acts he relished. I think he is a perfect fit for the Jets, take Sanchez out and put in yet another clown in the Rex Circus.

Incidently they are being picked as holding the number one overall pick next April,, May, June, whatever Roger Buttmunch decides. Very strong class for TE, may be the way to go. A few CB's will go in the first roud, but I doubt you will see 5 again. A total of 9 DB's went in round one, but Pittsburgh took a LB. It remains to be seen if getting pressure on the QB fixes the back end. I am hoping Mitchell blends in at FS and Troy plays as well as he did in 2013. The wild card to me is Jarvis Jones, I think he had a case of the deer in the headlights, but he coes have raw ability and seemed better as the season went along. The last rookie LB I remember starting was Kedrell Bell but his career was cut short he did not have the mental part from what I remember.

Good battle in camp for the #3 TE with Branchflower and Pat Paulson. I hope Spaeth isn't wasted again and forgotten in the red zone. I think he was still recoverring from his injury even though he was active at the end of the season.

If Mike Munchak gets these high round picks playing like they can, with Bell and Blount pounding the rock, it may force teams to put 8 in the box, which would give Brown or Archer a 1 on 1, Adavantage Pittsburgh, well at least on paper. Unfortunaelty they play on grass.

The Steelers thought J.J.was improving each game last season. I read an article that one of the Assistant's to Lebeau, named Joey Porter, is supposed to take him under his wing this season also. I can't help but believe he'll be better than last season.

EDIT: Speed is NEVER a bad thing!

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Jones get benched as the season went on? Unless you guys mean get got better in spot duty as a backup? I have seen some players perform better as backups/3rd stringers as opposed to full time starters.

Jones was benched early in the year for missed assignments, certainly not because of any lack of ability. Its a common problem for young players in Lebeau's defense. Knowing your job just isn't as easy as everyone thinks it is and Jones didn't know his well enough to be starting.

As the season progressed, the coaches felt more comfortable with his understanding of his job, which is to be expected. As he understood his assignments better, he played faster and started making more plays.

A full year under his belt plus a full offseason and I expect big things from him. His raw talent should really shine through once he can play at full speed without worrying about his responsiblities.

That's fair but wasn't he drafted for his ability to get sacks? He ended the season with 1 on the year. Add in his inability to know his assignments as you said and it does seem like he was benched for lack of ability.

Side note to this, wouldn't it be easier for a player to know their assignments when they are coming in for spot duty as opposed to a full time player?

You can add "lacked strength to hold the edge" in there as well as a reason for his pine riding...

He was certainly drafted for his playmaking ability. His "splash play" ability, as Tomlin would call it. He didn't get many sacks, but he was close several times and still made some big plays. His biggest issue last year, to me, was strength. He struggled with NFL offensive linemen. If he has gotten stronger, he will be better.

I'm not defending his play to the point of saying he was outstanding or anything, just saying that he wasn't terrible. I expected more and still expect more considering the talent that he has. Maybe he never reaches that potential, but at this point, I have no reason to think he won't.

And, just to be clear, he started 9 games, including 5 of the last 6. Woodley was injured at the end of the year, so take that with a grain of salt I guess, but he finished the season as the starting ROLB.

I'd go with NO on this one. Because play calls are determined by down/distance, offensive personnel, scoreboard, game clock, and field position - probably others as well - a player needs to know the full playbook whether they play 20 or 60 snaps per game. Otherwise Jones would be running on and off the field constantly.

In interviews with the LB coach, Jones was described as "not knowing where he was supposed to line up" on a large portion of his plays. He had to be constantly directed by his teammates or he was out of position. That certainly leads to a lack of production.

Finally, "inability to know his assignments" is not a good description for Jones. He isn't a moron. He isn't stupid. He has the ability to know his assignments, he just did not know them well enough in the first half of last season to keep him on the field. He played in the 3-4 at Georgia, but Lebeau's system is so different that it will take him some time to become proficient in it.

Agree with Mano and LTS. I think the best way to put it is, he had to think instead of just play football. Once a player knows the playbook and knows where to lineup, it's just a matter of playing football instead of thinking and worrying about making a mistake.....And yes, Lebeau does have a pretty complicated defense.....

  19. What culd have been....

While the Panthers considered Beckham the most complete receiver outside
of Watkins and Evans, Proehl left Tallahassee, Florida, feeling he'd
    witnessed something special.

"A guy his size and the way he just caught the ball ... just
natural, just like a vacuum," Proehl said. "I was in awe to be honest
    with you."

He remained in awe as he watched Benjamin during last weekend's
rookie camp. The following picture on Twitter and Proehl's comment said
