Burgh did your Grandmother carry those sacks off the Nina, Pinta or Santa Maria?

  2. gidion72 Legend Steelers

Was there anything in those sacks?

I am just thinking those 2 guys are really fast and seem to be more of what the Steelers are looking for.

Gidion, you are onto sometihing, team speed. Both Jones and Zumwalt fly and have the speed to get off the edge towards the QB. Love Sylvester, Williams,, etc..,, but I think they made a conscious effort to get younger and faster, at the LB and DL posiitions.

For those of you, myself included,, knocking the Dan McCullers pick, you need to put down your hater glasses and read his story. It is amazing what this kid went through and after reading the SI article, I can do nothing but root for him as a Steeler, a person, a good kid. Keep in mind once Dooley left UT, they switched back to a 4-3, and Big Dan was not familiar with the scheme, his best season at UT was when he played NT. Another thing to consider is that Beau Allen was a pure NT, ,not what they are looking for. They want Hybrids like Stevel McClendon who can line up anywhere on the D Line. McCullers at 6-7 of him can play the 5 technique if coached up by John Mitchell. And although we considered him a lard ass at the Senior Bowl, the truth is that at 360 lbs. the kid ahs 20% body fat.

Furthermore,, they signed Cam Thomas,, he will be the next Kimo Von Olhoffen, the front office targets the right type of FA. The only bummer about the draft, and even I am warming up to the Branchflower and Archer picks, they ignonred the secondary, JMFO. Colbert's record of taking 5th rounders is just well, no other way to describe it: SUCKY.

Yes, the Steelers are looking to get faster, no question about it. Many retired and some only have a couple years left. The articles are nice to read and complimentary to the players. But college stats don't always translate to the NFL. If they did, those 2 guys (Jones & Zumwalt) would of been drafted in the 1st round. I'm just hoping Ike hasn't lost another step......They picked up Mitchel to play opposite Troy, which is good.

yeah - and is it me or has Troy lost a half step or so also...? This concerns me.. the clock ticks....

Troy isn't ready to join you in the pasture just yet.

I got a read on Purifoy and Roberson going undrafted . As one scout put it: these mock drFts are bee ess. They inflate the hopes of underclassmen and some kids just are t physically and mentally prepRed . add in poor interviews. Pedestrian speed and getting lit up in the SEC it all spelled doom. Not to mention suspensions & arrests *REF*

  8. The 2nd part of the draft documentary (available here: http://www.steelers.com/video-and-a...erviews/039cf9c6-7c8c-4f2e-8fe9-eef15e8ea052) was pretty interesting. I think listening to Tomlin talk about how his first look at most players starts during the season when he is leisurely watching College Football on Saturdays was surprising to me, only because it's not how I envisioned the process at all. Also, the whole BLESTO (Bears, Lions, Eagles, Steelers Talent Organization) concept, which has been around since the 1960's, was REALLY intriguing. It makes sense that those teams split the cost of scouting (which IS expensive) and, while everyone gets to look at everyone else's notes, each team has different schemes and needs so it doesn't matter all that much.

  9. After watching a lot of the videos on Steelers.com, it seems like these new guys are REALLY humble. That is something I am super impressed by. Stephon Tuittm, especially, doesn't sound like something who is taking anything for granted. The kid wants to be a starter and is going to keep his head in the playbook.

That is one of the things that I noticed with the Steelers draft. They drafted kids who are hungry, humble, and ready to play their part to make the TEAM great.

Here's another story on one of the Steelers picks:

Thursday and Friday night of the NFL Draft, you likely watched in anticipation of who the next Pittsburgh Steelers selection would be, in 2014. Saturday afternoon, when the seventh round was concluding it, is also likely you were doing yard work, hitting Home Deport Bed, Bath, & Beyond, if you have enough time.

Rob Blanchflower was taken in the seventh round by Pittsburgh out of UMass. Blanchflower is a throwback of sorts to the tight end position and isn't going to remind you of the modern-day hybrid tight end that is in vogue, now in the NFL. Blanchflower will be a 24-year old NFL rookie in 2014. The high school defensive MVP, in 2013, led the Minutemen with, 313 yards receiving and three touchdowns. He Finished college career with 1,164 receiving yards, the most ever for a UMass tight end.

Blanchflower brings legitimate NFL size and talent, but the biggest question is whether he can stay healthy. A sports hernia surgery sidelined him for the final six games of his senior season. Invites to both the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine put into perspective how NFL teams view Blanchflower. The Steelers got a steal selecting him in the seventh round; it's possible if he was healthy throughout the last 13 months, he ends up getting drafted as early as the fourth round. For the NFL, he has a chance to earn a roster spot due to his size, hands and football instincts. A developmental player who contributes early on special teams. Yardbarker.com

The Steelers also had a PS receiver come into the rookie camp for 3 days. I forget his name but he's 6'1", 190 lbs. He was the only one that came in from 2013 draft and says he feels much more confident after watching and learning for a year. He will also be competing for the other starting WR job......

I seriously think the Steelers were after speed in this draft. It was the main focus on their draft board AKA Tre Archer as an example. Not to mention some of the other draftee's.....

Unless you quote bb, Dan McCullers is timed with a sun dial. *ROSE*

Spence gave it his all to come back but the reality is that he will probably never be the same player. Williams did get better as the year went on and I can't see him losing that battle. Should be interesting.

Dont you mean arena ball bb ?

What good would all this so called speed do on rainy/snowy days
playing at home, in Balt,Cleveland,Cincy ?
If the Steelers were a dome team it might make a whole lot more sense.

Speed is never a bad thing. Wet weather makes change of direction difficult, but with closing speed you can recover much better.

There have been people predicting that the NFL will be gone in X number of years. After the past few seasons, that prediction may not be so farfetched.
