Now the NFL is leaning towards April 30th for the start of the 2015 Draft.

Here's a good article I found on one of the Steelers FA's they signed. I also posted this on "rookies signed" thread by StlCrtn:

Submitted by 60 Max Power O Staff

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Shepherd OLB Howard Jones as an undrafted free agent and he got to show the team's coaches what he could do during the team's rookie minicamp.

Jones (6'2 1, 235) holds the school record for sacks (35) for the Shepherd Rams in 46 starts.

    Rotoworld writes:

'A "wow" athlete, Jones ran 4.6-flat at the Combine with a 40 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. He could afford to get stronger and fill out his frame, but has impressive 34 1/8-inch arms to separate from would-be blockers. Jones is short on technique but long on upside, and his special teams experience gives him a chance to stay active on game days as a rookie. Jones is an intriguing project for Steelers DC Dick LeBeau.'

Projected as a mid- to late-round draft pick, Jones fell out of the draft and into the Steelers lap.

?I know they pass rush tough here. They love pass rushing, so I definitely had to choose the Steelers,? Jones said, via Alan Robinson of Tribelive.com.

?They've always had pass-rushing linebackers, quick linebackers, and I definitely feel I can fit in the role.?

?I know I need to work on my knowledge of the game,? Jones said during the three-day Steelers rookie minicamp, which ended Sunday.

?I definitely feel I can fit in that role,? he said. ?(It's not Division II), but it's still football to me and I've been playing it since I was 5, 6 years old. It's still the same game to me.?

I was also thinking about what the Steelers want to do with Zumwalt? And if he can play inside and outside, that's like opening another roster spot and could help with the cap also.....

Zumwalt and Jones are going to spell the end of some of the other "projects" they hoped would come to fruition. They Didn't. Competition at LB is going to be crazy this year, excited about camp. NOT excited about the competition at CB, it's like they took one card in draw poker trying to get an inside straight. *SCRATCH*

That means Carter, and 2 others are gone from last year

Shazier takes Foote's spot, Zumwalt takes Woodley's, Jones gives Carter the boot. Moats kicks 1 other guy off.

Kion Wilson or Terence Garvin. Don't forget Spence, he may take care of the one Moats does not replace.

Oh yeah, forgot that he didn't count against the roster last night. ..Kion Wilson is gone if Zumwalt flashes on ST. And I think the last LB is between Spence and Garvin...well before the pads get strapped on anyways. There's usually a surprise player that shines in TC and preseason.

Here's the current LB depth chart:

    Worilds, Jason OLB
    Timmons, Lawrence ILB
    Shazier, Ryan ILB
    Jones, Jarvis OLB

    Moats, Arthur OLB
    Spence, Sean ILB
    Williams, Vince ILB

    Wilson, Kion ILB
    Garvin, Terence ILB
    Molls, Dan ILB
    Carter, Chris OLB
    Jones, Howard OLB
    So'oto, Vic ILB
    Zumwalt, Jordan ILB

I bolded my expected starters and underlined expected depth. Not sure whether they carry 8 or 9 LB this season.

I don't seriously expect Howard Jones or Jordan Zumwalt to make the roster this year. I hope they can clear waivers and stay on the PS though. Next year one or the other may contribute at a higher level.

Though I must say that Jones does stand a good chance to replace Garvin. They seem to be similar players but Jones is more explosive. I just don't know until they put the pads on, as you said.

Zumwalt is mainly an OL. The Steelers coaches like his versatility and think he can play IL also. So they told him to pay attention to the IL's as he may be moved around sometimes if he makes the team.....

These guys only make it if they can play ST's and beat out other STer's.

  14. Any updates on rookie camp over weekend?

I dont see a scenario where they keep Spence AND Williams. It's one or the other IMO.

Not much to regurgitate from the beat writers , limited exposure and mostly closed sessions

It was only a 3-day rookie mini camp. Jones and Zumwalt seem to have made an impression. You need more than 3 days to tell if a player will make the team though.....

and it was football in shorts... no pads - no hitting.....

Both of these guys are fast and had a lot of sacks.

    at the college level...

My grandma was fast and she carried a lot of potato sacks...

Let's wait till we see these guys play in pads before we send them to Canton...

    enjoy,
