Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

  1. I guess, for some reason before watching that video, I never really thought about the coaches, scouts, and GM all sitting in a room and discussing each player individually. This includes putting tape up on the wall for people to watch, highlighting character issues or interview RED FLAGS, but it makes a lot of sense. I really appreciate that the scouts give the coaches a list of players they really like and/or have concerns about and let them go take a 2nd look at the tape and figure out if they see anything that would move a guy up or down on the board.

The whole process is pretty intriguing to me, as it is INCREDIBLY collaborative and is one of the reasons the Steelers often do pretty well with their drafts (2008 and 2009 excluded).

I don't quite know what your getting at Gidion? Because Shazier fell 5 picks and would of been picked after the Steelers, that is a big deal not being in the Top 10? Does that make pick #11 no good? You never know for sure until they make the team anyways. It's just a tip on who the draftnik's are looking at next year......

If he had come out last season he would have been top 10, so would have Tuitt.

There's a good one who will fall down to #32 you think?

Haha, I don't think the Steelers will win the Super Bowl. So I'm not taking that into consideration. The best way to go into a season is with lower expectations. That way you won't be so disappointed if they miss the playoffs and you will be happier if they make the playoffs. I still think they need a top WR and are going to have to start grooming a TE, not to mention corner and safety. Troy will be a year or 2 older also by then. If they have decent drafts, I still think they are a year or 2 away from being a top contender if the drafts pan out. Plus the fact they will be a young team which means they will contend year in and year out. Like we're used too!!! This is just my opinion of looking at the roster they have now. And these young guys have to gain some experience also....

The best way to go into a season is believing you are going all the way. What good is hoping for less, that already means you are hopeless.

Different minds work different ways Gidion. I guess our minds are different. I am certainly not thinking the Steelers will win the SB next year.....They were 8-8 the last 2 seasons. Do you think this one draft is going to fix everything with rookies coming in? I will be happy to see improvement and go to the next draft from there......

No, but last years draft plus letting Sanders go will help us tremendously. I think Shazier, Jones, Tuitt and Wheaton are going to be a big improvement over last years starters. Our oline is going to be much improved with Munchack coaching. Ben is going to be on the same page as Haley at the start of the season. Bell and Miller will start the season healthy. This team is SB bound, what else would one expect.

Some good younger players with no injuries would be nice. And get them some experience. You take too much for granted. It's not that simple. I have to see these new guys play before I judge them.........

I may have looked at the Shazier pick the wrong way.
The Steelers play with 5DB's most of the time with Troy coming up
to play LB. Shazier will be more of a Troy replacement then a Williams one.
I dont think the Steelers should try to add bulk to this guy, look what happen
to Timmons when they tried it.
They should leave his weight alone and let him play SS.
What they really need to do is pick up another DL and go ahead and play 4-3 with
Shazier in the middle. They have been stock piling little fast Lb's which is perfect
for it. Even Jones would make a better 4-3 LB than he does as a pass rushing OLB.

You do know that Shazier and Jones both played in a 3-4 defense in college right?

  12. Okay?here are my thoughts:

1.) Ryan Shazier will play ILB, not SS (that's what Thomas will eventually play). His weight is fine and is right in line with that of a fast inside linebacker. He can put on UP TO 10 pounds, but much more than that will effect his speed.

2.) The Steelers are not switching to a 4-3. They have been running a 3-4 defense for DECADES and their team is built for it. The fast guys they have been drafting are so they can cover the field quickly and because, with the league being a passing league, they will play a majority of their defense in sub-package formations. Having linebackers that can cover, blitz and play zone is ESSENTIAL to compete in the league as it is now. Also, within their base defense, the ILB's need to be faster, as they should be able to go sideline-to-sideline as well as police the middle of the field.

3.) The reason Jones was drafted (and played AT ALL) as a rookie is because he was familiar with the 3-4 defense. He still had to learn how to cover and put some weight on, but he will be fine this season. His lack of success last year had more to do with size, being a rookie, and learning a very complicated playbook than the system.

i am laughing my happy white ass off at Ass Juice McCarren. That sour puss, and the whining and excuses have already surfaced. "I was told that i will be drafted between 16-35" "coach Saban knew I was injured and played through it" My stock dropped because of my personality was because a rumor started and it spread unjustly.

He had a 3-4th round grade and slid becaue his attitude sucks, he's lucky he got drafted at all.
Chosing Reality TV over the Senior Bowl, any college kid reading this, should learn from this putz. Quite Frankly, Jimmy Grapppolo parlayed the Shrine and Senior Bowl into a second round pick by one of the top teams in the NFL (throws up in mouth).
Nick Saban has no recollection of his "injuries"
The person giving him the mid first to early second round grade was probably his agent. While we're at it, you may want to sell him a Beach House in Nebraska.
More than one team expressed their dislike in his interviews, it's more fact that rumor.
If he thinks winning all those games at Alabama somehow gives him a pass, ,he's in for the shock of his life. When you have DJ Fluker, Andrew Steen, the Kuandjio Brothers in front of you,, good things happen. When you have C.J. Mosley and Ha Ha Dix stopping the other team you have an advantage. When you hand the ball off to Trent Richardson or TJ Yeldon, good things will happen. Class this missed.

My prediction, makes team ,never dresses out of Football in 2016. The kid is a bigger assclown than Maziel.

  14. His attitude is certainly pretty terrible and I firmly believe that will be the biggest problem with his career. I don't believe Manziel is going to be stellar for the same reason.

  15. igloofn68 Guest

Imo, I think Manziel handled himself pretty good with all the pressure put on him. Although I don't think he will be great in the NFL. As far McCarren is concerned, I read an article the day after the draft was over he was crying about where he was picked! I don't think he had the brains enough to realize that it doesn't matter where your picked. It matters that show up for camp and beat out the others at your position, no matter where your picked. If he has any ba11s, he will have a chip on his shoulder. But crying about something already? I doubt it!

    What does a Tampa2 ILB do ?

I think Carnell Lake was a LB in college also.

breed...stop trying to make sense of what the Steelers are doing!

The day that you come on here and agree with everything they do is the day I stop being a Steelers fan! :p *HIGH*

Seriously, though, there is no question that the Steelers drafted Shazier to play LB. Period. Yes, Carnell Lake played LB in college, but he was 5'10" and 210 lbs when he did it. He didn't lose weight to play Safety in the NFL, he just made a move to a more natural position.

Ryan Shazier is a linebacker. Say it with me...Ryan Shazier is a linebacker!

The NFL is moving on. The game is changing. The need for a big ILB to stuff the run is fading. Sure, stopping the run is still important, but the focus now absolutely has to be on stopping the short passing game that the elite offensive teams are perfecting. Fast LBs are the key to that.
