True, but theres no question teams pass a lot more than they used too.

The 2 names that stand out the most to me are Howard Jones and Josh Mauro, I'm surprised Josh went undrafted, I think this kid can be a huge steal.

MAYBE (that's a big "maybe"). If you expect Archer to be a third down back, as some have mentioned, he needs to know blocking assignments, so he is on a steep learning curve. I think it more likely he will be a change of pace back because Le'veon Bell is awfully good on third down. If Archer is in on the field on early downs he doesn't need to worry as much about blocking because they will tailor the play calling to his current ability. Third downs are less forgiving in that respect.

And I want to say again that I am not entirely against Archer as a player. I just would have gone three different directions with pick 97... Archer is at best a 5th round player IMO. And if I am wrong I will gladly eat those words with relish and apologize to him and all of you on this board too!

It's one of those arguments where both sides are correct. Today's NFL is a passing league, but if you want to win championships you MUST HAVE THE ABILITY to run the ball. Whether you do it a little or a lot, you have to be able to run effectively to convert 3rd downs, keep the defense on their heels, and convert TD opportunities.

Steelers signed Shepherd OLB Howard Jones.
Jones (6-foot-2 1/4, 235) set a school record with 35 sacks for the D-2 Shepherd Rams, making 46 starts. A "wow" athlete, Jones ran 4.6-flat at the Combine with a 40 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. He could afford to get stronger and fill out his frame, but has impressive 34 1/8-inch arms to separate from would-be blockers. Jones is short on technique but long on upside, and his special teams experience gives him a chance to stay active on game days as a rookie. Jones is an intriguing project for Steelers DC Dick LeBeau.

True there Rarebreed.... Rangers have stepped up their game as we go back to watching the Grass grow... How about at least trying to compete for loose pucks.... argh@!(*@(*&@!(*@!&(@*

Hopefully this draft class gives us something to cheer about.... I think rookie is either this week or next.

I think the main thing is the pass sets up the run, whereas before, the run used to set up the pass. Hence, more passing and a passing league. There is no question there is more passing. The stats prove it and a running back didn't go until the 50'spick. That's not to say a team doesn't need a running game. They need both, as LTS said. They just pass more now than when they used to run more. You don't see those great backs coming out anymore either, as it used to be......

  11. This pick was driven by Todd Haley to give him another weapon for Big Ben. Aside from Archer's ability to return kickoffs (which is a HUGE upside, keeping AB from harms way), he has supreme route-running skills. This is not a guy that will be running the ball that often?he is going to line up at receiver and out of the backfield like Sproles and McCluster. His speed will get him out into space and MAKE defenses pay attention to him. This is a weapon for Ben and the type of player Todd Haley LOVES to have, especially running the no-huddle. The team will utilize him A LOT and he'll be a fun to watch. I, too, am concerned about his size, but I think he will be fine.

  12. Unlike drafts of the past few years, it seems like they targeted game-breaking talent guys. They took very few risks, but got a TON of talent, ESPECIALLY in the first 4 rounds. I have a lot of faith in these guys and will not be surprised to see a couple as opening day starters.

  13. I am also with everyone else that, even though Shazier is going to be a freak in the middle, I am SUPER excited about Truitt. He is an absolute monster with a motor that does not stop. Him and Heyward are going to tear up offenses for a very long time.

    Folks,

Please go read the article up on Steelersdepot this morning about McCullers, Richardson, and Bryant.... hmmmm.. Will be interesting to see if these 3 pan out... I think it was beach that didn't like the Bryant pick and after reading the article I can understand his concerns....

    Draft picks I'm eggs-cited about:

    Shazier
    Tuitt
Johnson (no Mano - not that type of excitement)
    Blanchflower

    Draft picks I'm not:
    McCullers
    Richardson
    Bryant

    Luke warm:
    Archer
    Zumwalt

    enjoy,

    Two details:

    1. AB does not return kickoffs, he returns punts. Archer returns kickoffs and not punts (at least not in college). AB gets no relief.
    2. According to Archer's college coach, he was more effective when he lined up as a RB. His production and impact fell when they split him out and took him out of the backfield.

So it will be exciting to watch him, that's for sure. He is an electric kick returner, and seems pretty explosive in his zero-to-sixty acceleration. I understand and agree that he will be a dangerous player to have on the field, but at 175 lbs how long will he play? If he directly impacts the team winning games I'll love him and the pick - but if he gets hurt by week 12 and misses the rest of the season I'll be wagging my finger at everyone in a very condescending way... probably wind up with a bunch of thumbs down *REF*

I would so much rather have Desir on the other side of the ball with that pick. Basically I would have skinned the cat in a different way, but believe me when I say I'm all on board with Archer - he's a Steeler and I will cheer loudly with each long KO return or swing pass out of the backfield.

The Steelers think Martavis Bryant could possibly be a starter right away. Ben is happy with the pick because he's that big receiver he's always wanted the Steelers to draft. This is according to one of the coaches and a Yardbarker article. Yardbarker also thinks they got a steal with Zumwalt. So there is a difference of opinion. All I can say is, we shall see? I've never seen either play in college......

Actually Archer is going to scare the crap out of other teams. You cannot coach 4.2 and from what I gather he runs sharp routes, they will have to teach him to get off the LOS. If he improves the Steelers Fieid position by 7-8 yards on average, well worth the pick. I hate the direction the NFL is going, making XP's into a 35 yard FG or eliminating kickoffs.

Archer was a good pick even though CB was on everyone's Christmas list. It remains to be seen where Ike Taylor is and how bad Brice McCain actually is. I don't hate the Shaq Richardson pick, but given recent 5th round CB's is ain't looking pretty. As far as the McClullers pick, he was playing overweight and certainly might quicken up if Coach Mitchell has him down to 320. He will have to beat our Arnfelt and Nick Williams for a roster spot. I guess middle 7th there is not much out there. Unless of course you grabbed Steven Clark given our schitty rotating turnstile of punters.

Back in January after watching both Mosley and Shazier play a couple times I was more impressed with Shazier. Shazier was quicker and more disruptive in the games I watched.

I know there are some people who were upset about the pick but I honestly feel like the Steelers made a better pick.

I think Archer has to be used to stretch the field with his blazing speed. He makes Wallace look slow, what DB in the league has a chance to cover him on deep routes 1 on 1? My question is can he catch the ball? Speed is worthless if he can't catch. This guy is the fastest guy in the NFL as of right now.
    We drafted for overall speed.

I don't think people were upset, more like surprised and disappointed a little. Most of us had Dennard pegged there and when the Steelers ran right up after the clock started we just assumed we got a CB. When it was announced it was like that video of the genie's jaw drop that someone posted earlier. After the Shazier pick sunk in, it started to make sense. I for one don't follow college football very well and everything I saw for him said he was an OLB so I thought we just spent the past 2 #1 picks on OLB. With Worilds getting $10 million I didn't understand the pick at first. But MLB was a need and the D is instantly better which is the goal. I'm excited now, bring on training camp, we are that much closer to the new season!
