What is it with people's fascination with mocking Jarvis Jones to the Steelers. With his off the field issues toppled on top off his health scares, I truly believe that he falls out of the first and then becomes a value pick in the 2nd. He reminds me a lot of the OLB the Ravens drafted a couple of years ago who got into a drunken fight with a flight of stairs. Talent, talent, talent. But with all that talent, there is a red flags everywhere.

Sergio Kindle didn't have 28 sacks in two seasons in the SEC. The guy is a stud. I don't care what he ran in a 40 yard dash.

p.s. 9 of those came against Florida and Alabama. He wasn't beating up on Kentucky

I'm kinda miffed too that everyone and his mother says Jones is the Steelers' pick, but that's out of boredom more than anything else. It's too safe and easy to say Jones will be the major tumble in this draft. I try and make as well as seek drafts that think Jones will go earlier than we can pick. I don't think Jones is falling far at all.

Remember that the Saints are moving to a 3-4, and Jones would look great playing for them.

I'd feel better about Cordarrelle Patterson than some others. I see a lot of "safe" receivers in this draft and not a lot of dynamic playmakers.

  5. I'd be very happy if Jarvis Jones fell to the Steelers and they pulled the trigger. Cordarrelle Patterson would be a great pick up as well. He has some of the best footwork in the draft and makes ridiculous cuts while being blessed with a nice combination of size and speed. That kid has all the potential to be a world class stud at the NFL level.

  6. I can't fault Jones production in college and his poor workout numbers don't bother me, but when I watch tape on him he just doesn't hold up well against the run and gets blown off the line by bigger lineman. I have no doubt jones will get pressure but he needs to get bigger and stronger to be an OLB for the steelers.

Is he a good pick at 17? I'm really not sure.

Rumor is Atlanta wants to move up in the draft. Would you trade back to 30th? What do you think they could get in exchange?

Yep, the chance of finding someone like James Harrison, a guy who is equally capable rushing and defending the run, are slim to none. They just don't make too many James Harrison's. And before you say it Steelerking I started a thread at least two years ago titled The 100/10 Guy or something like that.

As Steelerking often likes to REPEAT ;), Harrison is the only guy in the history of the NFL (at least as long as they've recorded tackles) to have a 100 tackle, 10 sack season and he's done it twice.

Jarvis Jones won't threaten that and neither will any of the other special pass rushers in football because they aren't built like James. Clay Matthews, Aldon Smith, Von Miller, Cameron Wake... they are all built like Jones. They have exceptional quickness and bend but they can't put a tight end on his ass and gobble up the ball carrier.

I can live with that. I'll take Jones the way he is - a pure pass rusher that won't be great against the run. That's where guys like Troy and Pollard come into play. You put them in the box and let them run to the ball carrier.

I agree with Demo, the chances of him dropping are slim to none but if he does I hope they jump on him. 24 sacks in the SEC is unheard of.

Regarding Jarvis Jones, I had a chance to watch him play some. Even when he didn't make a play, he always seemed to be in position to do so. I won't fault him for it because sometimes you just don't make the tackle due to competing against other great athletes. I would not take him at 17 - not a chance in the world - but I do think he is a really solid LB. If he is able to stay healthy he will be a good NFL performer.

I think he would present value in the 2nd round, but 17 is just too high for me to take him.

    LTS,

I have to side with beachbum here, you don't sack the QB that many times without having natural hands and instincts. I mean he is going up against the Joeckal's, Flukers of the world...

    -bites

If anyone has a pick they like at 79 my turn is coming up, but please PM me, others are participating in the collaborative draft and some seem to follow my way of thinking, which works against me.

  11. You're stealing my thunder, beach. We all know I have exclusive rights to any information related to James Harrison, linebackers, and the Steelers defense. :D

The 100/10 bit is an impressive little piece of trivia though, isn't it?

    LTS,

What makes you think that Jarvis Jones isn't even a first round talent? He's better than Dion Jordan in pretty much every way and some mocks have Jordan going as high as #2 overall.

  12. nybites M.V.P. Steelers UCONN

The upside for Jordan is higher and he will not be a liability in coverage, hence the "value".

  13. nybites M.V.P. Steelers UCONN

I still like Jones in the first, too much production and tape to ignore. The reason Jordan and Ansah are that high, is the freakish athletic ability, like pieces of a puzzle that fit all over the place, a DC's dream come true. JMFO

  14. I'm aware of why he shot up the boards and leapfrogged more skilled players. The athletic freaks don't always pan out though. For every JPP there's a Vernon Gholston.

  15. I have to wonder why so many people are projecting Jones to drop to 17. I mean I think we all agree that would be a fall for him, are people just taking dumb group think into account?

And I am on his bandwagon still. I feel like there may be better options depending on things shake out but I won't complain with him. Him vs. Missouri last year he was a man amongst boys.

  16. This. The upside is always nice but if these guys were so good at developing talent they wouldn't be in the top 5 or 10 (many on a regular basis).

One week to go! All the bad/untrue rumors are coming out now.

CBS' Jason La Canfora expects UCLA RB Johnathan Franklin to be the first running back drafted.

Scouts from 10 different teams have reportedly expressed reservations regarding Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson's mental acuity.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, "some teams still wonder about" BYU DE Ziggy Ansah's age.

Cal WR Keenan Allen was red-flagged for a drug test at February's Combine.

  18. So which is better the player who has great athleticism and needs to develop technique or the player who has technique but has not worked at improving his strength and athleticism. Jones is quite unusual for a rookie in that regard. I believe it comes down to Jones' personal interview, will he realize he has to work harder off the field? If Jones gets stronger he will perform better against the run. I would say yes at 17.

If Atlanta is looking to trade up to 17. I would be most happy with their 1st,2nd and 4 or 5th next year. At 30 I would take Kaseem Greene from Rutgers and then Terron Armstead at the end of the 2nd.

Do these guys take the wonderlic test seriously?

    Tavon Austin scored a 7

    Cordarrelle Patterson an 11

I know it doesn't really mean anything but these guys are suppose to be college students. How many do you think you could get right just filling in the answer sheet without reading the questions?

I saw this on PFT and I thought to myself, I hope the Steelers are in negotiations. I doubt Armstead will be there at the end of the 2nd.
