That's why I don't think the Steelers should be thinking O-line at all in the first. There is plenty of Day 2 talent and with 3 picks, one will probably be used on the O-line.

cooper > Warmack >>> Jones, Schwenke

That's why you consider it. If you think you are getting a 10 year Pro Bowling.. at #17 at the OG position - You have to go in that direction. I just dont see a "10 year Pro Bowling" at another position at #17 my opinion someone may fall or develop into that... But I think the best bet for that to happen - is picking one of the OG's - either one would be BPA at #17

I think Vaccaro can be that guy.

On a side note; he has a canny resemblence to Colin Kaepernick

Crtn, this is the guy I am in hopes for in first round. I can see where another lineman can be a good thing but this kid in black-n-Gold would be a great thing. Imagine special teams, nickle concerns spelling Troy or Clark..... I think he's a cross between Troy and Rod and is absolutely, barring injury, a 10 year guy.

Thighs the size of a soccer ball... good grief.. :D If there is anyone (team) dedicated to either him or BPA before us, we're toast. If not and he's available, I hope they see him as I do. If so, he's off the board from #18 on.

  5. BB,

I understand the desire to go OG in the first round. However, the O-line is actually in pretty good shape right now and there are much bigger issues to address. For a change, there is a young O-line.

Vaccaro at safety truly makes the most sense. The biggest barrier would be Jerry Jones moving up and grabbing him, as they have had a terrible secondary (and team) for the past decade. Keeping the star in-state might be a high priority.

Speaking of bowling...Jerome Bettis was a semi-pro bowler and had a perfect game (300) :)

It's not my "desire" to go OG in the first - it all has to do with BPA at that spot - IF Cooper and Wamack are avail - I think they are BPA.. Cooper and Warmack are rated higher on a lot of boards...

Now Looking at safety - there is very good depth in this draft at the safety spot - one site (I think Walters) has an A or A- rating from top of the draft to the bottom - It's more likely you are going to get a player at safety through out this draft than Olinemen -

If we dont draft an Olinemen anywhere in the draft - I'm fine with that - I'm looking at Value vs risk vs availability

NY - At this point, I think you should just create a new thread in CAPS (ehawk we're thinking of you) call it STEELERS 2013 WAR BOARD and post what you have.. Let people look in over - add and or suggest movement. The first post would be "the" board and you could edit as you see fit..

for adds and movement - would be interesting to read comments on why

As far as the Vacarro vs Cooper argument

    Best Player argument:

They both are the best at their positions in the draft, although Cooper and Warmack are 1a and 1b depending on who you ask. While a deep draft at Safety, Vacarro is clearly the best at the position and can be position flexible, can play corner if need be. Cooper is also position flexible and can probably play OC also.

    Need Argument:

While many fans on here and I'm one really like the idea of solidifying the OL for years to come we don't exactly need another Olineman due to the signing of Foster and having Beachum whom can both play that position. Foster has started at OG the last 2 years. While we have Troy and Clark starting at the moment, Troy gets hurt a lot because of the physical nature in which he plays and currently have no one to back him up, and I believe his contract is up next year or very well could be a cap casualty so the need of drafting a safety out weighs the need to draft a OL, and why not get the best at that position if you can.

Now that the NFL is more of a passing league than it ever was before DBs and WRs are more important than ever before.

Exactly right. Besides, let's look at safeties.

Jonathan Cyprien, Eric Reid, D.J. Swearinger, Phillip Thomas, Bacarri Rambo, Shamarko Thomas, and J.J. Wilcox are all in this draft. Each of these guys can potentially thrive in our system. There aren't too many tackles or guards I feel as good about.

There isn't very much value in picking Vacarro in the first. He isn't a bonafide playmaker and won't see the field at all in 2013 barring depth issues. A top-flight guard can possibly start on day 1 and be an instant contributor.

I say let the Cowboys trade up for Vacarro if they want. This desire for him among Steelers fans is stemming from a fear for safety depth more than anything else. We wouldn't be pushing Vacarro nearly as hard if we had retained Will Allen.

By the way, I disagree with you on Cooper > Warmack, bb. Even though he's not as fast, Warmack is more powerful and sound while still being pretty mobile. This doesn't mean Warmack is going off the board first, seeing as Cooper's mobility is the type of thing that's rarer than an Indian steak, and the Titans are said to love Cooper, but if Warmack fell to us, that would be even sweeter to me.

    You forgot about Elam :D.

These 2 are real close - Then I look at the "new" zone blocking scheme that we will be running or a hybrid of it - and me - I give Cooper a slight edge - mobility - In a pure power blocking scheme I give Warmack the edge and dont sleep on the kid from Kentucky - He is going to be real good also but to me fits the power blocking scheme better...

I'd be happy with either - and I'd be fine with Vacarro too at #17... or Patterson Or the ND TE... etc...- But one of the reason I like the Olinemen at #17 - it is the position of the lowest risk of busting in round one hence value.

So say both OG are gone with Vaccaro and Austin still on the board at pick 16. Would the Steelers take whichever one is left seeing as they are at a PON; or if the Rams pass on both, who should they take?

  18. Demo,

I disagree that Steelers fans are pushing for a safety in the first out of fear for depth. Your right that Will Allen leaving put a huge hole in the secondary, but he was never the long-term answer for either position. After watching Troy sit out most of last season and seeing many veterans leave/get cut, it is very apparent the Steelers will need someone to replace "the hair" very soon. Vaccaro is a very complete safety. He isn't the big-hitter/lights out enforcer we may want, but he is technically sound and great/quick/physical in coverage.

As I have said before, going BPA only works when the best player fulfills one of your biggest needs. I am hard pressed to say the Steelers NEED another 1st round o-lineman. If Sanders leaves, they could very well be looking at WR in the first and a safety later, but I would actually be pretty surprised of the Steelers drafted an o-lineman earlier than the 4th round. They have too many other MAJOR depth issues that need to be addresses in this draft, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them "reaching" for some players to fit them.

Like it or not, this is a VERY critical draft, as the Steelers need depth and starters at various positions. They are not in a position of luxury to just sit back and go BPA without REALLY considering the positional needs they must address. I have faith in the front office, but don't be surprised of they go a completely different direction than many "believe" they will (I am saying this to myself as well).

    Yeah...Manti Teo ;)

  20. Ironman, I agree on Vaccaro he is overhyped and I really don't want him at 17. Safety's that go in the top half of round 1 need to take the ball away and Vaccaro isn't good at that. Sure he can tackle but you can get players just as good in rounds 2-3 IMO.

Again I'm with you on Brown. I said the other week I think the steelers like Brown way more than people think and he is in the conversation at 17. In fact at the minute he's the guy I think they take.

Austin I'm torn on. Has potential to be a real weapon but guys his size who play the slot don't go that high.
