Speaking of which, I first started coveting Shazier (don't remember exactly when) after we lost out on David, who I really wanted in 2012. I lost my mind when I saw how Shazier was even faster than David, yet came with immense production and energetic leadership on the field. He was from Ohio State to boot, so I felt it was a perfect marriage. My excitement had tapered off since because Shazier's stock fell a little and I didn't feel like the Steelers would be interested anymore.

There's no question David is and will continue to be a fantastic NFL linebacker. Shazier can potentially be even better.

By the time the draft rolled around this year, I wouldn't call Shazier a reach because he was at the tail end of our range anyway.

Every team in the AFC North had a good first round except the Browns. Figures.

I think the next 14 picks dictate who they take at 46. Back in 2008 they went tall WR in round 2. Too bad the guy's feet were bigger than his heart.

  4. Picks 37 and 40 will b huge picks for Pitt....their the only 3-4 defenses ahead of them(I cant see Houst going DL again) that wuld consider Hageman or Tuitt of course w no trades....if either are on the board I think they have to get starter/depth at DL w this pick if these guys are here

I would have liked Fuller as well and I was just as surprised by the Shaz pick as everybody else, but the Steelers obviously thought he was the right guy. He's already put on 10 pounds from the end of his last season and he has room to grow a bit more. If he plays at 240 lbs, that's plenty big enough for an ILB. His speed, coverage skills and instincts are excellent.

Lets remember that the very best years for this defense have always been when they have had a dominant linebacking corps. The years of Harrison, Woodley, Timmons and Farrior were fantastic. The years of Porter, Haggans, Farrior and Foote were just as good. Worilds, Jones, Timmons and Shazier certainly have the pedigree and talent to be equal to, or better, than those two groups.

Shazier is not a 1 year starter like Timmons was. He's played alot of football already. He'll contribute, at the very least, in sub packages and on 3rd downs this year and I fully expect him to be a starting, 3 down Buck, by 2015, if not sooner.

I would never take a TE that early in the first round. To me, TE is like RB, you can find good ones later.

As for Collins, I can't say he wouldn't have been a good player for the Steelers, but I can't second guess the Bell pick. The kid has the look of a great RB and fits what the Steelers want to do offensively perfectly.

Agreed, they need to find a CB tonight that can work into the lineup and eventually replace Ike on the outside.

BTW...I much prefer the thoughtful breed who makes an argument for his stance to the "FIRE THEM ALL!!" breed! *SHADES*

Very few things are known. All these guys are prospects, and usually only the top 10 non-QBs are considered guarantees.

So don't make any judgments about Jarvis Jones yet. Let's see what he does this year.

Eiffert may have been nice, but Jarvis Jones was considered a special player who showed real dominance in the SEC. Tough to argue against. Who would you have picked as your RB if they ignored Bell and took Collins instead?

You know they will. They might even take two.

You HAVE to have speed and balance in the LBer's also when playing the 3-4. The LBer's are the ones that force the opposing QB and are supposed to make most of the sacks......There are more DB's in the mid rounds than good LBer's. Shazier has great speed and is strong. Can go sideline to sideline. Could start this season also, imo.....

Bell likely would have been there in the 3rd round to take instead of a QB that cant hit the side of a barn.

    Pick Team Player Position School
    1. Texans Jadeveon Clowney DE/OLB South Carolina A-, we knew all along, a blockbuster trade was the only better option
    2. Rams (from WSH) Greg Robinson OT Auburn A, let's get physical
    3. Jaguars Blake Bortles QB UCF B, best QB prospect in draft, however not much around him
    4. Bills* Sammy Watkins WR Clemson B, not the player, but what they gave up.
    5. Raiders Khalil Mack OLB Buffalo A-, BPA and it will give them much needed Defensive help
    6. Falcons Jake Matthews OT Texas A&M B+, he is a technician, pick made sense
    7. Buccaneers Mike Evans WR Texas A&M B+, look you have to get some weapons to complement the Offense.
    8. Browns* Justin Gilbert CB Oklahoma State C+, not so much the player, but that they had Sammy Watkins dead to rights.
    9. Vikings* Anthony Barr OLB UCLA A, check back in 2 years this kid is going to be unstoppable once he learns to use leverage
    10. Lions Eric Ebron TE North Carolina grade C+, Their secondary sucks pond water, I think a DB would have been a better pick
    11. Titans Taylor Lewan OT Michigan grade D, Michael Roos, Michael Oher, and now another OT.
    12. Giants Odell Beckham Jr. WR LSU Grade B-, not so much the player, but Zach Martin made much more sense
    13. Rams Aaron Donald DT Pittsburgh Grade B+, for strategy, my pick would have been Pryor, could have gotten DT in round 2
    14. Bears Kyle Fuller CB Virginia Tech Grade A-, they needed DL help, but the secondary was just as awful.
    15. Steelers Ryan Shazier OLB Ohio State Grade B, Time will tell if he or CJ Mosely was BPA
    16. Cowboys Zack Martin OG/OT Notre Dame Grade A+, and I hate the Cowboys. Value, safe pick, helps Romo immediately.
    17. Ravens C.J. Mosley ILB Alabama Grade B+, Ozzie made the right call, it was a tossup between him and Pryor.
    18. Jets Calvin Pryor FS Louisville Grade A-, man that is painful to say. Best FS in the draft, helps restore their backend D.
    19. Dolphins Ja'Wuan James OT Tennessee grade C, right position, but Botonio, Moses still there, I liked Si'a_Filo here.
    20. Saints* Brandin Cooks WR Oregon State Grade B-, not the player, it's what they gave up.
    21. Packers Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix FS Alabama Grade A-, grabbed a Safety before the talent level dropped off the Earth.
    22. Browns* Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M Grade B-, Boom or Bust, the curse of 22 lives on.
    23. Chiefs Dee Ford DE/OLB Auburn Grade C+, yeah they need sacks, I just don't know if he has the weight to play DE.
    24. Bengals Darqueze Dennard CB Michigan State Grade A-, value right here, but there is a reason he slipped (speed/footwork)
    25. Chargers Jason Verrett CB TCU Grade B. Tough as nails, and grab the best CB available before the board gets cleaned out.
    26. Eagles* (from IND) Marcus Smith DE/OLB Louisville Grade D, good player, holy reach Batman
    27. Cardinals* Deone Bucannon SS Washington State Grade A. Best safety in the draft, and they slid back to get him.
    28. Panthers Kelvin Benjamin WR Florida State Grade C, only because it was early, and he is boom or bust JMFO>
    29. Patriots Dominique Easley DT Florida Grade D-, an injured 3 technique, with stud TE's staring you in the face. RETARDED.
    30. 49ers Jimmie Ward SS Northern Illinois Grade B, for strategy. 4th Safety taken, fills a huge void left in free agency.
    31. Broncos Bradley Roby CB Ohio State Grade C+, Talented, Gifted, but lacks the ability to locate the ball,
    32. Vikings* Teddy Bridgewater QB Louisville Grade B+. In my eyes he was worth moving up for to jump ahead of Houston.

  10. I know many of us are still a tad confused about the pick of Shazier (ESPECIALLY with Mosley and Dennard on the board), but the Steelers were very adamant that his skill set is rare and that he was the HIGHEST player on their board. They took BPA on their board because they like him in packages and sub packages.

Even further, Colbert said something in his press conference when talking about evaluating corners that they HAVE to consider what kind of coverage they have played. Dennard didn't play in a very difficult defense and wasn't asked to do a lot (even though I REALLY wanted him) so that may have something to do with it.

Mosley, on the other hand, was a phenom in college, but was very all over the place on people's boards. Some people liked him a lot and some people thought he wasn't worth a 1st round pick at all.

The thing that everyone seems to be pretty consistent on is Shazier's unbelievable speed. When we drafted Timmons, his pursuit and athletic ability were (and still are) an insanely rare combination. With the Steelers playing a lot of sub package football, it only makes sense to have a guy who is going to come in and be able to blitz, cover, and play zone in all situations.

I have to believe that they did their due diligence on CB talent (they did bring about 15 of them) and had Dennard a few other guys rated pretty close. When the time came, Shazier was their guy and they didn't flinch.

Every year you guys defend the poor picks and every year the Steelers as a team get worse
or at least not any better than the last.
Thank goodness they have a pretty easy schedule this year to help.

  12. Now, to make all of you smile, this was a funny reddit section:

    Meanwhile, at Browns draft central
"Hey boss, got us that cornerback you wanted!"
    "...you mean quarterback...right?"
    "I thought you said cornerback..."
"...sigh f*** my life. Alright bring in the beer, guys. It's gonna be a long season again..."
    ONE HOUR LATER
"I DID IT! I GOT THE RIGHT GUY THIS TIME! PUT AWAY THE BEER! THE SEASON ISN'T LOST!"
"About damn time. We're still gonna fire you."

And that, everyone, is why they are just terrible. :)

I have 3 targets for them, one of whom I hope, okay I am praying is Louis Nix III.

Look at my intitial Shazier comments, I was out of line. Hey emotions run deep on here, it's a passionate sport.

So let's NOT break down the Shazier pick, dissect it into a million pieces. How about as fans we embrace the kid, high five him, and become fans again instead of critical armchair GM's. Three local kids from Ohio State, whose dreams were to play for the Steelers over the past few years. There dream came true and I for one am NOT going to piss on their parade.

  15. I don't think we are defending them. While it is possible for many of us to watch youtube clips and games, none of us are professional scouts (sorry, NY). We are not privy to interviews, which is the MOST IMPORTANT part of the draft process. Sure, there are outright misses that people make (not everyone is good at their jobs, after all), but all we have is a basis of comparison, television, and a computer.

We weren't making "the Board" with the Steelers brass. We weren't talking about their strategy for the upcoming season or how THEY feel about their team as a whole. The Steelers had a lot of talent, but age and $ cost them the past two seasons. They are a very young team, now, and will be hungry and competitive again. It just takes time to "rebuild the machine."

The team has 8 more picks. We have plenty of time to grab talented guys and fill holes.

  16. nybites M.V.P. Steelers UCONN

I said it early on, but didn't listen to myself. Dennard played press man exclusively, he jacked the WR at the line and got physical. His hip turn wasn't as good as Fuller or Gilbert, I admit I had him too high. What I did do right this board, I eliminated good players who simply did not fit the scheme. Aaron Donald was the best example.

I've learned to wait awhile why you fly off the handle before I really dig in because you always expose yourself sooner or later. You argue you want guys that contribute early and then you give us Jamie Collins.

    2013 Snaps

    Jamie Collins 310
    Jarvis Jones 646
    Leveon Bell 691

And I will throw down a significant amount of money right now that Ryan Shazier will exceed all of those guys next year. He's a Day 1 starter.

  18. NY, the media will be doing that for us for the next few months :)

The team was very smart with their approach to free agency, and has had some pretty good players the past few seasons. Sure, some of them didn't pan out and some left for more money elsewhere, but the Steelers are re-tooling their defense. They have a good basis, but just need a few guys to fill some holes.

I assume they went BPA on their own board, which NONE OF US can fault them for because that is the draft philosophy among this group. We may not always agree, but at least we're not Dallas.

Wait just a minute, I AM the Lead Draft Analyst on Mud and Cleats for good reasons. *ROSE*

Actually I applied for the job and got it, with no previous experience in an actual NFL Franchise workings Hey I am not just an armchair scout like everyone else who happens to be more opinionated and work at this a little harder than some. Thankfully I just play GM on the internet. No apologies necessary Indiana, I am comfortable who I am, and I still think I am a better guesser than Kiper.
