Datone Jones to the Texans , line him up opposite JJ Watt

Wow, now those are the type of DEs I would love on our defense and pray for, that way the pressure isn't always coming from our OLB's.

So we're going to a 4-3 ? I'm not sure that is such a bad idea, with the current defense we have, Our DE's are definitely made for 4-3 and we're short on the big time LB's and d-backs who just got relieved of a lot of pressure that's put on them (especially in outside coverage).... just sayin ... Tomlin effect ?

MoS, I believe Wade Phillips runs the 3-4, or are you just saying that because you think Datone is more of a 4-3?

I just think of JJ Watt as this extreme pass rusher... not so much a contain guy. Ziggy and Cam are built better for the pass rush IMO than DE's ( Aaron / Brett ) in a 3-4.

It would also lessen the load on a depleted LB corp and would change the DB game plan to a more pass cover / zone than run support that I think it is now. Less expected out of the DB for run support and more from the LB. Our LB's are capable of this scheme also, IMO.

100% pie in the sky ... really just throwing it out there as supplementary to possibly taking advantage of our current players best pure abilities. When drafting, we take best player available and change them to meet the needs of our system... what if we find ourselves in a situation where reversing that order is the order of the day.

If so, does who we draft 2013 tell us / show us something new ...

You really can't look at the Texans 3-4 and make comparisons to the Steelers. Phillips runs a one-gap 3-4. JJ Watt has a gap assignment at the snap and he's allowed to explode off the ball and penetrate that gap - much like a 3 technique.

The Steelers play a two-gap 3-4. The job of the 3-4 in a two-gap scheme is to use his hands to stand up the blocker in front of him, READ the play and cover both gaps on the side of the blocker in front of him.

JJ Watt doesn't have to think after the snap, he can just explode. Ziggy Hood has to physical but in a passive way and not commit until he sees which way the back is going. It's apples and oranges.

    Well you're nuts and bananas

    What were we talking about?

Have we talked about Nybites' endorsement of a Guard in the 1st round?

Do the Steelers have bigger needs?

Can the Steelers afford to go BPA this year?

I would love to do mock, does anyone know if I am listed here and have access? I got all sorts of trades and scenarios working in my head this will be one of the most unpredictable drafts in recent history .

Sounds like Sanders will be let go, I hate his drops and injuries, just not worth 2.5M to me. Draft is loaded with WR talent. Still some free agents out there keeping things in perspective.

Cooper will probably be gone @ 17 so don't sweat it. If we had a big board, Austin and Patterson would be below Cooper and Vaccaro, but ahead of Jarvis "game day" Jones. :)

If Cooper goes first then Warmack might be available. Either one would be a welcomed addition.

  13. I expect one of Cooper or Warmack to be available when we pick. The problem I have of goin in this direction is IMO Larry Warford will be just as good as theses two guys at the next level if not better and we could get him in the second round.

The first round pick IMO should be a playmaker who can have an impact as a role player on this team. Whether that's a WR, safety or LB I don't care we just really lacked those game changing plays last year.

What blocking scheme are we going to run? If this new Oline coach is going to a Zone Blocking scheme there is no way Watford will be "just as good as these two guys" - If we are going to run mostly power blocking - then yeah I can see some of your point - But Cooper is far and away the most mobile of this group of 3. With deCastro at the RG and a kid like Cooper at LG you would have mobility in eithe direction - Watford is more like Foster than Cooper

playmaker - then WR safety and LB are listed.. In my opinion Olineman are playmakers too.. they have to make "plays" whether run or pass blocking - we all know what happens when the Oline breaks down. Has Pouncey made an impact? Is he a playmaker? my answer would be a big YES.

As NY stated, I dont think Warmack or Cooper will be on the board at #17 - But if either one is - I have no problem with us drafting either one. Personally, I like Cooper over Warmack.. more mobile. Just my opinion.

You can forget Jennings - I think he signed with Seattle - Going to be interesting watching that division this year...

  16. That's a good question because we don't know exactly what scheme we will be using and I guess if we draft an o-lineman we will find out the answer?

If we are goin down the zone blocking route I'd rather go Brian Schwenke or Barrett Jones in the 3rd or 4th than cooper in the first. I just see more value. They can both play OG and centre and I have always felt Pouncey would be a better guard than centre.

I guess you can call any player regardless of position a playmaker and that is true. I listed those positions because IMO they are the areas on the team that we need playmakers in whether it be down to a lack of talent or guys getting old. For me the oline is different because we have great talent across the line and we don't need to add elite talent just depth, cohesion and guys being healthy.

A great OL can make everyone look good.

I absolutely love Barrett Jones. He is a very versatile player, but would he be considered a "reach" in the 2nd round? Maybe the smartest and pro-ready OL in the draft. He was once considered a top-10 player as well.

  19. burghball Guest

    StlCrtn,

I like B.Jones a lot too.. very versatile intend.. I dont think he is quite as mobile as Warmack and Coop - but would be more position flexible.. Never have to worry about his off season work ethic either. I've seen him mocked to the 3rd round! If that happens - someone is getting a steal.. I also like Brain Schwenke OG/OC from CAL - He is quicker off the snap than ANY inside Olinemen in this draft - has played OG - would need to put on a few lbs.. but another Olinemen that is going to be a steal and down sleep on NY's guy Armstead - can play OT/OG also. Going to be interestine draft to say the least to see where some of these guys fall.

    enjoy,

Re these inside Olinemen - I've The Wisconsin kid - Fredericks - rated as the highest OC on the board.. I dont buy it - Kid is slow and not a great athlete. I'd take either Schwenke or Jones over him in a heart beat...

    enjoy,
