Mano will not be available for the next 4 to 5 hours. He is combing the war board list in search of Johnsons.

 

Sorry guys, its just not the same! Besides, who really likes Storm Johnson and Dontae Johnson?? (Yes, I really did go through the whole list looking for Johnson's! :[ )

 

NY - If Blake Bortles was available when the Steelers pick at #15 in first round, would it tempt you or the Steelers brass into taking him?

 

Sorry not happy with the 1st round pick, you have Gilbert rated 1 spot ahead of Fuller, and if the Bears didn't take him right before us, I'm guessing he would've been our pick, so why according to the board wouldn't Fuller be the pick at 15?

We don't know how the Steelers actually rank the top 3 CB's, The CB position is crucial in today's game. Fuller could possibly be the BPA in position of NEED at 15 depending where the Steelers have him ranked. Mosely may be BPA, but it's not in a position of need.

 

Roc, You realize these are mock drafts made by people who have no clue what the teams will actually pick?

 

The philosophy is you take the best player at his position if you can. Fuller is rated the #3 CB, Mosley the #1 ILB. Wasn't Fuller a 2nd round prospect until recently? Mosley started in the 10-12 range and has fallen. Too much hype in both cases, too much time between football games and the draft. Mosley is a heck of a football player.

 

Disagree - you take the best player available.. period.. with a few exceptions - obviously not taking a QB at #15... Recently saw a show with Charlie Casserly on it where he explained this quite well and showed example where they picked best player at a particular position(need) that bit them in the butt... He was very strong in his opinion that BPA is the way to go - and I agree - If Mosley is BPA - you take him.. If its someone else a CB, OL, etc.. you take them. The Steelers will set up there board and pretty much stick to it. We have no idea what that board looks like but if they draft for need vs BPA - they open up a future of possible trouble..

Of course, that would depend on how that "need pick" plays compared to BPA.......It is possible for a high need pick to end up being the better pick after all is said and done.......As we all know, 1st round BAP player picks also don't pan out.....There are no guarantee's....

Anyways, I originally came here to post what Yardbarker has to say today. They say the Steelers will take Evans if he is there, but that they don't think he will be.....

 

Teams say they draft BPA but it is BPA at an area of needs. Just look at the Steelers draft last year.

Jarvis Jones- Harrison was gone, Woodley injured a lot, and Worilds really didn't do much before last season

LeVeon Bell-they didn't have a #1 guy. They were not crazy about Redman or Dwyer

Wheaton- Sanders signed a one year deal and they were not going to resign him

Thomas- Clark was entering his final season and they were not bringing him back

Landry Jones- Batch and Leftwich were too old to bring back

All 5 of those picks were areas of need.

 

Exactly. Whether it's the Steelers or Ravens or whoever, if they claim BPA then the BPA board is made by positions of need.

 

Can any of you get a hold of Steelers=sb ?

 

Eggs-actly and let's see where these need picks land us in a few years.. see Landry Jones, Thomas, Wheaton... Not wild about any of those players.... time will tell

I'd almost bet J.Jones was BPA - he was a top 10 pick for a long time before he dropped.. due to a phantom medical

and I could argue L.Bell was on the Steelers board as BPA when they pick

That's true if you take it to the extreme, and you would also take QB in some cases. But the flip side of that is you might be tempted to take the best CB remaining, even if the #1 ILB is available, even if that CB is a 2nd round talent. That's a pretty big reach.

I actually agree with burghball, that you take BPA in the first round every time. The Steelers have commented before that you can't go wrong if you take the #1 player at his position. I'm sure they feel free to exclude punters, kickers, and (for now) QBs from that system though. In later rounds BPA tends to fall by the wayside because if you already took a pair of LBs you won't add a third one just because he is the best player on the board. And, as has already been mentioned, BPA is always modified by team need when a board is put together.

At any rate, this was all based on nybites taking Mosley at #15 instead of Fuller. Mosley is higher on the board than Fuller, so it was correct to take Mosley with that pick. If you think they are out of order then ask ny to drop Mosley down below Fuller on the draft board. But I think that's a pretty tough move to justify.
