Steelers Draft and Mel Kiper sucks thread!!

First of all, there's very little chance the Steelers have Kyle Fuller ranked so high as to be worth the 15th overall pick, and if they do, some evil scientific corporation is performing experiments on Colbert's brain.

Second, why? There's no roster hole on this team anymore that necessitates immediate reaching in the draft to fill. All the free agent activity this offseason, if nothing else, patched what glaring holes there are, either completely or partially, so we don't have to rely on a draft pick to come into the organization and carry that position on his back right away. That includes cornerback.

Color me crazy, but I don't think the Steelers are in love with Mike Evans. BB brought up Zack Martin, and I'd be inclined to agree with him. I said before that Martin is a Logan Mankins clone, and I'd love to have young Logan Mankins on this team. Mankins is a guard, but can and has played tackle in a pinch, something Martin would also do.

As for Evans, he's got an immature aura about him that I'm sure the Steelers are aware of. The need is also overrated with Antonio Brown on the roster and Markus Wheaton hopefully primed to contribute, with Lance Moore a promising slot receiver.

They'll "probably" stay at 15 and pick the best player they can. Colbert wouldn't make a short list of three guys and then panic when they all disappear. He'll undoubtedly make a longer list, and like I said, Evans may not even be on it.

Here's something to remember: Colbert has never traded back in the first round.

That doesn't mean much. A true backup guard is possibly this team's greatest need on offense. I buy that Adams and Gilbert deserve a year with Mike Munchak, but I'd be very happy if we could get any of the quality mid-round guards that would be options, namely Brandon Thomas, Trai Turner, Anthony Steen, Russel Bodine, and several others.

Now, hang on. If number of personnel is your top reason for the Steelers ignoring o-line for a while, why do we need two corners? Also, we have five WRs already, three TEs (four if you count Will Johnson), and three OLBs. The roster can't be as minimalist as possible at OL (where injury is a big concern) and go hog-wild in multiple other areas.

I think this is key. The Steelers should have a list of 20 guys they would take at #15 - at the least - and that list will include every non-QB taken with picks 1-14. I know I am keying in on 3 guys who I prefer, and think may be available then, but would not hesitate in the least to take OT, OG, ILB, DE, or WR if Dennard/Gilbert/Mack are not available. I don't expect Mack to be there but am not willing to rule it out. I would bet there are 8 players on the Steelers' Round 1 board available at #15.

I heard something on tv about the Bills and that they are not happy with Stevie Johnson. There was some speculation of a trade. I think Johnson, Robert Woods, and Mike Williams would be a decent receiving corp

They seem to be paying much closer attention to Kelvin Benjamin...

  5. Would love Benjamin

I love his upside, and if he develops into what I think he can, I am also on board. However, Ben's window is closing, not sure how long I want to wait. Colbert won't trade back in round 1, I think we agree on that. The thing about Marqis Lee, Beckham, Cooks, we already have a roster full of speedy little and medium sized dudes.

  7. I dont think it will b a huge learning curve....according to Jimbo, Kelvin is 1 of the smartest players he has coached...I would make him a weapon in the red zone to start and then get him acclimated as the year goes on.

  8. Smokescreen perhaps?

  9. Benjamin reminds me of another Seminole and that is Lawrence Timmons. Remember, Timmons was far from a finished product out of college but was a physical specimen with all the tools to be great. I see the same with Benjamin, not a finished product but good coaching and he could be a true weapon. Personally, I think they're looking at a guy like Evans or Benjamin, both of whom stretch defenses. Maybe not those two specifically but similar type players.

If I had to guess, though I think they want Dennard over both.

We are at 15, I have a feeling 1 of these really good OTs are going to fall to us. This is one of those years where a stud OT may fall to 15. The Steelers won't pass a stud OTcup.

  11. steelersking M.V.P. Steelers

Unless there is a stud CB or WR sitting there as well. Beachum and Gilbert/Adams are good enough to win now, but if Ike Taylor regresses even more, then that CB spot is a glaring need.

  12. gidion72 Legend Steelers

Stud OTs are hard to come by.

  13. steelersking M.V.P. Steelers

As are stud CBs...receivers on the other hand do seem to be easier than the other two positions being discussed.

  14. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

If you stop and think about it for a second . . . CB's have to do everything a WR does. Except they have to it backwards.

  15. steelersking M.V.P. Steelers

True, but the rules today favor the WR. And it's a good WR is way more common than a shut down corner Imo.

  16. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

I think that's kinda what I said. *SCRATCH*

  17. This is true, but Robinson and Matthews are the only guys I consider stud OTs in this draft. Adams and Gilbert are both talented and Beachum is incredibly intelligent and driven and I'd rather see what Munchak can get out of them.

  18. 57 scouting reports done for the site, I'll share with you guys some of my favorites that I want to see them add

    RB
-Damien Williams. Looks like a good third down back
-Marion Grice. Ability as a receiver makes him valuable for this team
-Jerick McKinnon. Inexperienced but great raw running ability
-Henry Josey. Would love to add him as the team's scat back
-Terrence West. How can anyone not root for him?

    WR
    -Mike Evans. Obvious reasons
-Jordan Matthews. You all know I've been on his bandwagon since October
-Brandon Coleman. That man is 6'6" with not bad speed
-Martavis Bryant. Very intriguing size and speed combo, return experience and a lot of raw tools
-Dri Archer. Playmaker this team could use
-Cody Latimer. Jerricho Cotchery-lite in the slot
-Robert Herron. Speed, speed and more speed
-Tevin Reese. Good size and speed combo, could be a good guy to bring off the bench and throw deep too
-Michael Camparano. Never bad to have a tough, smart receiver in the slot
-Kevin Norwood. Nice size and very polished, could contribute from day 1
    -TJ Jones. See above
-L'Damian Washington-Spent all of 2013 watching him out run and out jump defenders to make big plays

    Safety
-Ty Zimmerman. Football smarts alone warrant consideration

I agree! No way either of those guys are going to be there at 15.

I don't see Evans or Watkins making it to the 15th pick. Outside of those two I don't see a WR that is worthy of a top 15 pick.

Dennard or Gilbert should be there for the Steelers with the 15th pick. I know people have differing opinions on Gilbert and Dennard. I see Gilbert as the athlete and Dennard as the better football player.

I re-watched UMich vs ND this afternoon and I got to saw Tyler Lewan looked a lot better than I remember - Had a real solid game. Would be an upgrade over what we have. Not saying we are going that way - I think one of the CB's but would not bother me if we did... I'lll try and catch another Umich game on the Big10 network in the coming weeks..

    enjoy,

    one of the idiots
