  3. Right, one of the strongest, most agile, athletic players in college football will suddenly get rolled cause he is 15 lbs lighter than most of the guys at his position. Did you know that Farrior played middle linebacker at like 218 lbs for the better part of his last three years? This is how teams make huge mistakes, the measurable height, weight, speed, and collective combine results only confirm the tape. As for proof about the sub packages, it's easy to find, we ran big nickle and small nickle a ton. Do you remember seeing Troy playing middle linebacker? We ran 4-2-5 and 2-4-5. If you ask me, Donald is perfect when we run designer defenses, he is great at stunting, has the athletic ability to drop into short zones like we see Keisel do regularly, and can be hidden or helped if need be on short yardage or run plays. Christ, go back and look, he is a better athlete than Woodley was by leaps and bounds, he could probably play outside backer in certain situations. Here is what will be buffered, when the Ravens dive in to pick him up after we swing and miss on someone and he dominates our offensive line twice next year. Not sure about you, but a guy with 4 great pass rush moves already, going against our offensive line is scary. I guess we can agree to disagree.

  4. Additionally, go ask Justin Pugh from Syracuse currently the highest rated T/G that came out of last years draft how he did when trying to"roll" Donald. Not very well, plus donald beat him on speed rushes and bull rushes. There is even a run play where Donald is lined up directly over Pugh, who fires off the ball, only to find fresh air cause Donald had disappeared before he could lay a hand on him. By the way, Zach Martin and 3 other Senior bowl linemen said he was the most difficult guy to deal with.
Ever heard of Randy White, Charles Haley, Jack Youngblood, Geno Atkins, John Randle .... All undersized guys who made defenses a lot better.
I bet if you go back and look at film, Clowney, Dee Ford, Hageman, and every other D-line prospect gets rolled more than Donald did. Sure, if he is double teamed in the run game he gets rolled, but that means someone else on defense is running free, which is what we want, o-linemen being occupied by having to block two on one.

  5. Stillers, Jernigan will b the better NFL prospect...mark it down

    ajm,

I like Robinson but I think too early in the second round (#47) This draft is deep at WR. If we go WR in the second I like the kid from Vandy better - Matthews. Lot's of later round kids to choose from also.

Re Robinson - I think he's more of an early 3rd rounder and unfortunately we dont have a pick there (yeah we have a 3rd round comp pick - but I doubt Robinson is still on the board at #97)

    my opinion,

You really think so? Moats is not a long-term solution IMO, or he would have gotten more than a 1-year contract. He is quality depth but in no way precludes the Steelers from going ILB early.

Did you see that Barr from UCLA is coming for a visit? The Steelers must have an idea that it is possible he falls to them (even if unlikely). That would be a nice pick as well. Can't have too many quality LBs in Pittsburgh - it gives the team great leverage in free agency.

  8. When I look at the roster as it is right now, I don't see them drafting an ILB until round 4 for a few reasons. The guys they have on the roster are absolutely capable of running both inside positions, and Timmons is still a monster. Vince Williams ran with Timmons most of the year last year as a 6th round rookie. I see him making huge improvements this year. Sean Spence is another huge question mark, but they drafted him and haven't given up on him for a reason.

The other huge reason is the question marks we have at a few positions that this draft just so happens to be perfect for. I see the beginning of the draft being a bit of a crapshoot as none of the "top QB's" have been super impressive. However, the biggest need many of those teams need is pass-rushers and O-line help, meaning we should have no problem picking Dennard OR Gilbert. I am more of a Dennard fan, simply because he is incredibly physical, but Gilbert's KR abilities and ball-skills are impressive. It's no secret that this is PROBABLY Ike Taylor's last season and giving him some young talent to tutor is incredibly important.

If, for some reason, the Steelers are not able to get either Corner and Mike Evans is available, he MUST come to Pittsburgh. I say this, knowing that he will not pass Baltimore and I REALLY don't want to play him twice a year. Having a good corner to combat him, however, would be a huge plus.

I have to agree with an earlier poster that the Safety position is shored up for quite awhile after Mike Mitchell was signed. He plays A LOT like Ryan Clark and will be able to work with Troy and Thomas this season to build chemistry for the future.

I see the Steelers drafting a Corner and a Wide Receiver in round 1-2, with round 3 being a bit of a crapshoot of ILB, OLB or D-Line. Surprisingly, I could also see them going TE in round 3 to give Ben another target and create more mismatches.

Looking at the offense, this team is building to win another Super Bowl SOON. Their defense is influx, but putting up 28 points a game sure helps take the pressure off. If they run the no-huddle primarily like they keep talking about, they will need some young talent on that side of the ball to make it as easy as possible for Big Ben to find the mismatches. Wheaton will take a big step this year and we know what we have in Brown, but Lance Moore and a few other guys will need to step up to make this team lethal. I think the defense will be better than last year (top 10 would be a HUGE improvement) and I think they just need a few tools to bring them back to where they were.

I agree - we need to draft Defense - but my opinion.. We still have question marks at OT - Gilbert and Adams.. mediocre at best....(will they develop? Adams maybe - Gilbert I think is topped out) Adams got beat out by Beachum for LT.. and M.Gilbert.. very inconsistent and we can surely upgrade.. Am I saying take a OT early? no.. but if a guy like M/Moses is available at #47... or Zack MArtin may be BPA at #15... or the kid from Nevada later.. Schofield OT UMich even later.. We need to take a look, if it means an upgrade at RT.

We have a window with Ben of maybe 4 more years with SB possibilities. We need more quality drafts the next 2 years to enhance that window. I know every one likes to bust my chops about Wheaton, but I guarantee you he will at least be better than Sanders. I just feel Sanders hurt us too often in games where 1 score would have won it for us. What we need for this team is whatever will help us win a couple of more SBs. If we go no-huddle all the time will more weapons help this team score around 30 a game? I don't think we will be good enough defensively to have our offense only averaging around 20 points a game. The draft isn't going to improve our D enough for that, but we may be able to get our offense good enough to carry the defense for once. When you have a higher scoring offense it causes your opponent to be more mistake prone and one dimensional. So which way should this team go ?

  11. burghball Guest

    Gid,

going to depend on who is available when we pick .. but If I had to guess - it'll look pretty even spread between Defense and Offense.. 5 defensive players - 4 offense... my guess.

  12. gidion72 Legend Steelers

My point I was trying to make is we need to become a higher scoring offense because I don't see our defense being top 5 again anytime soon of coarse unless we sign Harrison and he found the fountain of youth.

  13. burghball Guest

    Gid,

got it - my point is you cant reach for offensive weapons.. example - if Evans, Watkins and K.Benji off the board - there is no way you pick M.Lee at #15.. its a big reach in my opinion.. so.. it is really going to depend on who is available when we pick.. IF they aren't reaching for offensive weapons (M.Lee and Ebron are reaches at #15 in my opinion) then I'm all for it.

Okay, I updated my mock of 3 rounds, some major changes and added the comp picks. please LOOK FOR MISTAKES. It may not seem like much, but you are looking at 6 hours of work, doikng research and figuring out needs and who went to who's pro day, etc.., Really looking for things like, SF already took a DT, why are they taking 2 more, or you got some guy listed twice.

I have rounds 4, 5 done, but not the comp pcks. They really muss up things, because I had to move everything back 12 spots.
