    Nice call Mano

The Steelers are hosting FS Louis Delmas for a free agent visit on Monday.

I know this wasn't addressed to me but Woods is a free agent as well. Our depth chart at DE is non-existent prior to free agency.

Which is why it is so hard to do mocks this early. I was very high on Haggeman you can go back a month+ to see that. But with new info I am looking at players around the same value grade. Ebron is value and also a high ceiling. I am not totally sold on Evans, but I am not discounting him. I like Pryor over Dix and Haggeman over Nix. I'm really getting annoyed at the mocks that give us Nix or an OT. It only shows the ignorance on draft folks who just plug in anyone in a mock to sound like they're informed , (they're not)

Delmas signs with Pittsburgh that really changes my thought process in early rounds.

  4. I want to smack anyone that tries giving them a tackle, double smack those that say Lewan.

I agree on Evans, I am not sure how much better he is than some later round receivers. With DT you should not take a NT above 20th in the draft unless they are also a great pass rusher. Most of the time, DTs are either pass rushers or run stoppers, its rare to find someone who excels at both. Dennard has been passes by Gilbert in some mock/Big Boards because of the Deion factor "he can take any int to the house" Dennard was placed as the top DB because he won the Thorpe Award. Dix vs Pryor reminds me of Troy's rookie year, there is not a general opinion over who is the top safety. Pryor looks like a bigger hitter and Dix looks to be more conservative and make less mistakes.

  6. I see Pittsburgh signing Delmas. He will be fairly cheap and bolsters depth in an area of need. If the sign him, I really think they will stay away from Safety with the first three rounds of the draft. If Gilbert or Dennard is there in round 1, they should take the one they are higher on, but having one or the other there is still just fine. I don't see the Steelers targeting D-line in the 1st, but if none of the corners are there (and they are comfortable with the Safety situation), it seems like ILB or *gasp* wide receiver is the most likely route.

I think safety is an overrated need. With the subtraction of Clark, we need only keep Will Allen around to hold down the spot for a year or so until more focus can be given to the position. That is, unless the Steelers believe Robert Golden is the future there - none of us have actually seen Golden do anything to prove that. I'm entertaining the thought of the Steelers signing a free agent, but only because there are several deserving names out there. I'm not expecting it to happen.

On a related note, we just need one new corner, and we're good. The Steelers don't place much emphasis on the secondary, and I don't see why they would change this year.

I see our 3 biggest needs as CB, S & NT. that said if somebody highly rated at WR or LB fell to us I could see us jumping on them. We gave up a lot of big runs up the middle last season and could use a good NT, but I just don't see one in this draft. Our defense starts with stopping the run, and if you don't have that great NT you won't be very successful at it.

I don't think we'll be going DE in the first this year, If we do I would prefer them getting a player like Kony Ealy, who can generate a pass rush.

I believe that if Worrilds gets resigned, then the Steelers won't draft a LB. The ILB spot is sitting better than most feel. Timmons, Foote, V. Williams, and either Spence, Garvin, or Sylvester. The OLB spot will be set with Jones, Woodley, and Worrilds, with the possibility to slide Sylvester out there. Woodley isn't going anywhere this season. You can never have enough good OLBs and he would be way to costly. Don't be surprised to see Worrilds on the left and Woodley on the right as well; while Jones sits back and plays in certain situations.

One of the issues against the run is that they did not play the base defense very often. Most of the bigger runs came against the nickel and dime when a NT was not even on the field. At the end of the season I thought the same thing about NT, but after watching film I saw that was not the case.

That's where really good LBs come into play. If we're going to be in Nickel 60% of the time we need a guy like C.J. Mosley!!! ;)

Definitely. Impact players anywhere along the front 7 will always give you an advantage. The only question I have is whether the number of nickel+ snaps were to hide inexperience in the middle, or if they just decided that today's offenses require a more flexible defense?

At the moment it looks unlikely, but until the combine is finished we won't know much of anything.

Logic says one of the top
3 LB will be there @ 15. (Mack, Barr, Mosley) IF they reding Worilds I think Mack & Barr are luxury picks I'm not sure they have .

You mean we were in the nickel or dime when Peterson broke off his long run? The Vikings suck royally at passing except for that day, and we play a defense to help Peterson run easier. I think I am on board with Mosely too. I wanted the other LB from Ga. Ogletree for this reason. He had a good rookie year with the Rams if I am not mistaken. The way the NFL is going I could see it becoming the all passing league with no running and a 5 Mississippi pash rush. Got to protect the players.

No, that play was in the base defense and it was primarily Vince Williams who allowed the TD. Should have been a 3- or 4-yard gain. But on the season they played a majority of snaps in nickel+, increasingly so as the season wore on.

I liked Ogletree too, he was a more explosive playmaker at Georgia. But there were character concerns with him and Jones was the much safer pick. Ogletree may burn out after 3 years (or he may be All-Pro), but I expect Jones to be around for 6-10 years and be a really solid guy.

  18. I have the luxury of working RIGHT next to Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indianapolis Convention Center and my office is connected to the Omni Hotel (where all of the players stay). I did see Tomlin and Colbert eating at one of the restaurants nearby, but didn't stop to ask them who they were looking to interview :D

I will keep you posted if, on my Starbucks runs over the next few days, I notice them talking to a positional player (all of the positions are given specific colored UA gear, so it is pretty easy to figure out who is who).

  19. Colbert said this is the deepest and most immature class he has seen. That will be interesting.

  20. So I've been noticing Walter keeps saying everyone but AJ Green that Ike lined up against went for a season high.

Well I did a little reseach and counted zero, count them zero, players that went for season highs.
