Kevin Colbert was on the radio a couple days ago and said they were $10 million over the cap. They will save $6 when they cut Levi Brown.

Heard Kerry Rhodes on NFL radio couple of weeks ago. He sat out last year but played really well for Arizona in 2012. Not sure why he sat out but my guess is he didn't get an offer that was suitable. He wants to play and he'll probably take a different approach this off season. He's only 31 years old.

I might be one of the few, but I'm not even remotely concerned about the salary cap. The Steelers will have plenty of room when they need it.

Only is a relative term I guess. I would be interested in Rhodes, but if we are going to spend some money on an outside guy, I would rather go a bit younger.

If we are seriously considering the hypothetical situation in which the Steelers sign a free agent safety to be reality, the guys I'd look for are T.J. Ward (the best FA safety we could possibly afford), Chris Clemons, Stevie Brown (torn ACL with the Giants in 2013 after great 2012, only 27), Husain Abdullah (two INTs in the Chiefs' wild card loss to the Colts), and Malcolm Jenkins.

I was thinking veteran minimum or only slightly higher. If he was more than that I agree with you.

Stevie Brown sounds good. Ward is going to get overpaid somewhere. Like him in the box, not so much in coverage. Jenkins is his counter part. Good in coverage but doesn't want to tackle.

Pretty much this...only I still like Delmas for the right price.

Mike Pouncey has been named in the Wells report as one of the players who harassed Johnathan Martin. Pouncey is in the last year of his contract. If the Dolphins owner is looking to distance himself from anyone involved, should the Steelers try to trade for him? It would most likely involve sending the Steelers 2nd rd pick to the Dolphins for their 3rd rd pick. The positive would be the chance of signing both brothers to team friendly contracts in 2015 as they would like to continue playing together, but there is no guarantee and the Steelers might just be renting him for one year.

  12. The Steelers do not need a guard, let alone don't need to give up high picks for one.

The Dolphins would be foolish, as would he Steelers. Also I believe Alex Mack is a free agent. Look for Balt. or NE to pursue him.

No need to trade for any interior lineman. Steelers found 2 good replacements for Pouncey.
I also think it would be a bad Idea to over pay for Maurkice. JMO

I'm not a finances expert, but I know the Ravens couldn't even begin to afford him.

Pouncey's contract has a 5th year option for 2015 that the Dolphins have to exercise in June if they intend to keep him. I can't imagine any circumstance under which they wouldn't do that. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.

I came up with a draft I actually feel satisfied enough with to post. I'm explaining the reasoning behind the more questionable selections.

    1. Ra'Shede Hageman, DE, Minnesota - This is a position the Steelers value greatly. It's also their greatest need, and they have room for several new DEs. Since the pickings are scarce, why not start here? I'm still higher on Hageman than a lot of you guys, and that's because I haven't discarded his potential, his measurables, or his high points. This is a draft where we aren't looking for immediate starters anywhere, and Hageman could be an immediate and effective part of a freshly deep rotation.

    2. Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford - I'm actually really high on this kid. His attitude and play style could nicely complement Timmons in the future. This is another position the Steelers value greatly.

    3. Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss
    4. Pierre Desir, CB, Lindenwood
5A. Justin Ellis, NT, LA. Tech
5B. Kirby Van Der Kamp, P, Iowa State - The most unheralded need on the team. It's not like Mat McBriar will be here next year.
    6A. Brandon Linder, OG, Miami
    6B. Brent Urban, DE, Virginia
    7. Michael Schofield, OT, Michigan

    UDFA. Shamar Stephen, DE, Connecticut
    Dri Archer, RB/KR, Kent State

I love your 3rd round choice! I really don't know much about Hageman. I guess I should get to work on him.

I can tell you he's slipped a bit because he was inconsistent at the Senior Bowl, and among his negatives is that he can disappear for stretches in games. I've been high on him for a long time, and I was disappointed in his Senior Bowl performance. Afterward, I reevaluated him and realized he is still a force against the run with the measurables and quickness to develop rushing the passer. He has a really high ceiling, and while he's no JJ Watt at this point, he can be great with the right work ethic, coaching, and environment.

Also, Moncrief would be an excellent complement to Brown with his size and potential as a reliable chain-mover. He's one of my favorite receivers in this draft.

Demolisher, why do you think DE is our greatest need? Is it a foregone conclusion that Hood is gone? Is Al Woods not a viable option? What do the rest of you think?

(If this has already been discussed earlier and I missed it, feel free to ignore my query.)
